Only friends tell each other the truth. And I'm proud to call you a friend, no matter how annoying I find your voice.
~ Fred to Velma.

Frederick "Fred" Jones is the tritagonist of the HBO Max animated show Velma.

In stark contrast to many other representations of the character, Fred in the show is depicted to be a stereotypical rich white man who acts entitled and childish. However, as the series goes on, Fred becomes a more helpful and positive person and agrees to help Velma find the killer.

He was voiced by Glenn Howerton.

Appearance[]

Fred has white skin, black eyes, and blond short hair. He wears white sweater over his blue shirt, an orange ascot with topping off, light blue jeans with dark blue belts, and brown shoes with white lines.

Personality[]

Fred is a flighty, scatterbrained, self-absorbed, and rude to others. He has been the only child of a wealthy family, and has been a popular student at his school. He puts a smug aura around others, but when things don't go in his way, he throws temper tantrums and behaves childishly. As an example, when Fred met someone that does not fit his expectations of living, he became angry and thought of himself, "he's too much of a pussy to kill someone". His jerkish personality also develops into misogyny, something he regularly shows. In addition to being sexist, he is also racist, getting Velma's attention by calling her "Samoan" and "Mexican".

However, it has been shown that most of his evil actions were influenced by his abusive parents, who did not believe that he could lead the family business. He later behaved like a brat after seeing the disappointed face of his parents.

As the series progresses, he begins to show complexities, tries to be more accepting of others and attempts to become a better person. As an example, Fred respectfully thanks Velma's father for trying to help him clear his name. When he had the opportunity to kill Velma after she insulted him to get him to defeat his mother, he refused. Despite Velma's negative personality, he considers her a friend, since he considers friends to be genuine when they remain truthful to each other.

He has also shown to be very naive, such as when he allowed his mother to convince him that she was possessed by the ghost of Edna Perdue. After his mother's death, he starts to become more independent, creating his own ghost hunting organization, as an escape to find the ghost of Edna Perdue. Despite everything his mother has done, he still mourns her death and visit her grave. He then tries to find Edna's ghost in an attempt to believe that her mother wasn't that bad and that she was just possessed by a ghost.

Trivia[]

  • Despite the overwhelmingly negative reviews and hatred of the show from the fans, Fred is considered by many to be one of the saving graces of the series, being praised for having a genuine character arc in contrast to Velma, in spite of lacking any of the original character's traits. Ironically, he was written to be a hated character.
    • Fred's voice actor, Glenn Howerton, has also received praise for doing a pretty good young Fred voice and for his exaggerated performance.
