Frederick Burford, callsign Canopus, is the deuteragonist of the video game Ace Combat: Joint Assault. He is an AWACS operator of the PMC Martinez Security and its air forces' M42 Squadron, which he commanded during and after the Valahia crisis.
He was voiced by Goro Ohashi in Japanese and by Jack Merluzzi in English.

Burford was originally a member of the United States Air Force, where he was deeply respected by his colleagues until he quit due to dissatisfaction with the lack of air combat. He eventually joined Martinez Security and became the commander of M42 squadron, consisting of Antares and Rigel Squadrons.
Joint Assault[]
During the military show over the Midway Island, Martinez air forces had to repel an attack by the Valahia terrorist organization. In the ensuing war against Valahia, Rigel Squadron defected to their side, but Burford and Antares Squadron kept fighting for IUPF. They are credited with stopping Valahia's nuclear attack on Europe and North America, discovering shortly prior who was the true mastermind behind the crisis — businessman Andre Olivieri, who now intended to attack the United States with his private army. Knowing that, Martinez Security quit IUPF but was attacked by Olivieri's forces shortly after.
Burford assisted Antares Squadron as they fought the Golden Axe Plan Private Army, defended San Francisco and put an end to Olivieri's plans once and for all. Later, he watched his pilots depart on yet another mission.
