The Free Mutants was an mutant resistance organization formed by Bishop.

History

Background

In 2008, the U.S. erects a 2,000 mile-long "Mutant Wall" along the U.S.-Mexican border to hinder movement of mutants from Mexico. Politicians maintain that the structure is a necessary measure for the prevention of illegal immigration. Others contend that the wall is a last-ditch effort to contain Mexico's growing population of mutant rebels.

In 2012, around 30 mutants are rescued from Trask Industries mutant prison camps. Blink is instrumental in smuggling the detained mutants out of the camps.

In 2018, Bishop, a Camp X-Ray escapee, builds a global network of mutant resistance dubbed the Free Mutants.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

By 2023, Bishop's Free Mutants organization is on the run from the Sentinels, using Shadowcat's powers to send Bishop's mind back in time a few days every time they come under attack to change the course of events so they can escape. They later work alongside Storm, Wolverine, Professor X and Magneto to combat the Sentinel threat. The combined group comes up with a plan to use Shadowcat's power to send Wolverine, the only one who can survive the trip, back in time to 1973 to change history and erase the apocalyptic future from existence. As a side-effect of this, the X-Men and the Free Mutants can't flee and must defend themselves from a massive Sentinel attack. During the final confrontation in China, the Free Mutants are wiped out by an invading host of Mark X Sentinels, with only a mortally wounded Magneto, Shadowcat, Wolverine and Professor X remaining. Before they too can be wiped out, Shadowcat breaks the connection keeping Wolverine in the past and his actions erase the Sentinel future and the Free Mutants organization from existence.
