Pre-Super Genesis Wave[]
Following Dr. Robotnik's coup d'état, which gave the doctor control of the Kingdom of Acorn, a group of old Mobian soldiers who founded Knothole Village formed the first team of Freedom Fighters to oppose Robotnik's growing empire and protect their village from his forces. They raided Robotnik's capital of Robotropolis on many occasions to steal its resources and lured SWATbots into the forest to destroy them. However, during a mission to save the kingdoms rightful ruler King Acorn, the team was lead into a trap after being betrayed one of their own and they were all roboticized by Robotnik then sent to the Zone of Silence.
Princess Sally Acorn was inspired by the Original Freedom Fighters actions and eventually formed a freedom fighting team of her own called the Knothole Freedom Fighters. Together, the new Freedom Fighters were able to shut down many of Robotnik's factories, destroy various Badniks, foil Dr. Robotnik's plans and keep Knothole Village safely hidden from enemy forces. Eventually, the war against Robotnik ended after the tyrant is vaporized by his own weapon.
King Acorn is rescued by the Freedom Fighters from his imprisonment inside the Zone of Silence and resumes his role as the kingdoms ruler. With Robotnik gone, the King felt their was no more need for the Knothole Freedom Fighters and had them disband in favor of his Royal Secret Service and the reassembled Royal Army. However, King Acorn changed his tune when an alternate version of Robotnik known as Dr. Eggman began his invasion of the kingdom. He reformed the Knothole Freedom Fighters who returned to their old headquarters and restored contact with the various allies they have made over the years to assist in battling against the vast Eggman Empire.
As the years passed, more freedom fighting teams would form to resist the Eggman Empire's forces in other regions of Mobius. However, the Knothole Freedom Fighters eventually suffered a major defeat after Dr. Eggman sent out his Egg Fleet and launched an all-out assault on Knothole, reducing it to rubble. Most of the team's members and allies are captured using teleportation beams while the Freedom Fighters de-facto leader Sonic the Hedgehog is viciously beaten by Eggman in his Egg Beater battlesuit. Despite all this however, Sonic and the Freedom Fighters' remaining members still managed to save everyone by having them sent to Nanite City, a holding of the Eggman Empire which Freedom Fighter Nicole took control of and had transformed into New Mobotropolis. When Dr. Eggman attempted to take back his city, Sonic worked together with the rest of his teammates and allies to defeat him. Afterwards, Rotor the Walrus was forced to retire from active duty because of a back injury he sustained during the Egg Fleets's invasion.
Despite their failure to prevent Knothole's destruction, the Freedom Fighters would continue to fight for their new home, and would eventually get their chance to launch an assault on the enemy headquarters and finally end the war. Although they initially faced resistance from the Dark Egg Legion, the Freedom Fighters were allowed to pass through so Sonic could confront Eggman in what was seemingly to be their final battle. The fight concluded with Sonic's victory, causing Eggman to loose his sanity completely and leave him in no state to lead his empire. The Freedom Fighters and citizens of New Mobotropolis celebrated in what appeared to be the end of the war until their good cheer was cut short with word that the Iron Dominion, another oppressive governing body ruled by the tyrannical Iron Queen, had assumed control of the Eggman Empire.
The Freedom Fighters worked together with their ally Monkey Khan to keep the Iron Dominion from attacking New Mobotropolis for some time, but the team were caught off-guard when Nicole temporarily fell under control of the Iron Queen's Technomancy (a magic used to control machinery) and dropped the city's defenses for their enemies to invade. With little time to spare, Sonic, Tails, and Sally leave with Monkey Khan to sabotage the dominion's relationships with allied clans to weaken them. Meanwhile, Amy Rose stayed with Bunnie and Antoine at the city to keep an eye on their enemies. Nicole also regained her senses but agreed to continue serving the Iron Queen for a while longer so the Freedom Fighters can keep tabs on her.
They eventually launched their attack on the Iron Dominion just before Sonic and company returned with the news that clans allied with the supremacy have renounced their allegiance, causing one of their factions to yield. Despite the domination's attempts to fight back, the Freedom Fighters were victorious in reclaiming New Mobotropolis and had captured the Iron Queen. However, they soon discovered that Dr. Eggman had regained his sanity and escaped with the Dark Egg Legion.
The citizens of New Mobotropolis began to question if the Knothole Freedom Fighters could still protect the city after the loss of Knothole Village and the Iron Domination's invasion. Nicole was a particular concern to many Mobians as she fell under the Iron Queen's control and prevented their escape. Matters were made worse with the arrival of the villainous wizard Ixis Naugus, who sought to manipulate the kingdom's current ruler, King Elias Acorn, into handing over his kingship to him. Sonic raced inside the castle to stop Naugus, but when Dr. Eggman suddenly reappeared to attack the city with his latest weapon, the Death Egg Mark II, he agreed to a temporary alliance with the wizard to prevent New Mobotropolis' destruction. Sonic and Sally were able to breach the Death Egg's hull, but the doctor had anticipated this and sent his latest Silver Sonic to distract them. Although Sally managed to go further into the station, a hidden turret suddenly emerged from the wall and shot her as Eggman activated a phenomenon called the Genesis Wave to warp reality.
In this new reality created by the Genesis Wave, the Freedom Fighters and their adversaries were much younger and neither Sonic or Tails were members of the group yet, nor have they met them. Bunnie Rabbot was also missing from the lineup as the Freedom Fighters were still in their early days as a resistance group. Sonic first encounters the Freedom Fighters after saving them in Green Hill Zone and Sally Acorn tries to recruit him in their mission to stop the plans of their enemy Dr. Eggman. Sonic shows no interest in joining their team but decides to help them when he briefly remembers Sally being shot in the unaltered timeline. The Freedom Fighters encounter Dr. Eggman a few times before Sonic and Sally began to realize something was not right their whole situation, causing Sonic to race off in search of the doctor again while the others focus on shutting down Eggman's factories. Sonic confronts the Dr. Eggman aboard the Death Egg where he learns that the villain warped reality in an attempt to stop him from interfering with his plans. As a result of this, reality was tearing itself apart trying to revert to its original form, something which Eggman planned to fix by roboticizing the whole planet and cementing the new reality in place. Sonic fought and was almost defeated by Dr. Eggman but he managed to use the stations served wiring to transform into Super Sonic once he learnt the Death Egg ran on energy from the seven Chaos Emeralds. He then quickly destroyed Eggman’s mecha and used Chaos Control to restore the unaltered reality ten seconds before Sally is shot in order to save her.
The world is changed back to how it was before the Genesis Wave was first activated and Sonic is able to save Sally from the hidden wall turret just in time. However, they soon discovered Dr. Eggman still planned to roboticize the planet and destroy any technology on Mobius that could be used against him. Sonic was attacked by Metal Sonic as he tried to stop him while Sally crawls into the roboticizer's circuitry so Nicole could reroute its energy back into the machine itself, which would cause a malfunction. Nicole made the changes just as Eggman fires the roboticizer, causing it to explode and severely damage the Death Egg, but as Sonic begins to gloat over their victory, he is horrified to find that Sally was roboticized by the incident.

Tactics[]
Archie[]
In the Pre-Super Genesis Wave continuity, The Freedom Fighters originally used guerrilla tactics due to their limited numbers. However, they eventually chose to use more direct assaults in later years.
It’s unknown if guerrilla tactics were ever used in the Post-Super Genesis Wave continuity, as the groups more frontal methods of attack still seemed to be used in recounts of past events.
