Freewheeler is a supporting character in Generation One of the Transformers franchise, based on a figure from the 1989 toyline. He is a member of the Race Car Patrol.
Marvel Comics[]
Freewheeler's first chronological appearance was in the UK-exclusive story "A Small War", which showed him as one of the first Autobot Micromasters created by Emirate Xaaron. He and most of the other Micromasters were sent with Roadhandler to destroy the Decepticon base where the Battle Patrol were being held prisoner, in order to stop the Decepticons reverse-engineering their own Micromasters. When Roadhandler admitted his doubts about their orders, Freewheeler told him the rest of the patrols would support whatever he decided. Roadhandler ultimately chose to rescue the Battle Patrol, succeeding even though it was too late to stop the Decepticon Micromasters being brought online.
This led into Freewheeler's Marvel US debut in Issue #54, where he and the rest of the Race Car Patrol arrived on Earth with the Off Road Patrol in response to Optimus Prime's request for reinforcements. All of the Micromasters made their disdain for Autobot leadership plain but accepted an assignment to investigate suspected Decepticon activity in New Jersey. Exploring the nearby roads, the Race Car Patrol were alerted by journalist Cecilia Santiago to a plan by the Decepticon Pretenders to destroy most of New York City with a storm and harness its energy. Freewheeler and the others made it to the top of the Empire State Building just in time to defeat Iguanus, who had been planting the electro-stator vital to the plan. In the following issue, with Roadhandler having decided the Micromasters should stay in New York to build relations with humans, Freewheeler acted as part of his entourage during his career as a wrestler. Roadhandler abandoned the plan when Lord Zarak threatened the humans who had befriended them in order to force Roadhandler to lose a match against Storm Cloud.
Freewheeler's last chronological appearance appeared to be the UK story "(Double) Deal of the Century", which showed him and the other members of the Race Car Patrol operating under Optimus Prime and accompanying him to meet Chainclaw, who was bringing battle plans from Cybertron. After Doubledealer ambushed Chainclaw, he used his status as both Autobot and Decepticon to sell the plans to Scorponok while claiming a ransom from the Autobots. He then returned the injured Chainclaw and convinced the group Scorponok was responsible, leading to Freewheeler and the others launching an attack on Scorponok's Decepticons while Doubledealer left the scene.
