~ Frey to Marth, before becoming his decoy. |
Frey is a minor supporting character who appears in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem, remakes of Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light and Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem respectively. An Altean knight subordinate to Jagen, Frey helped Prince Marth escape Altea castle when it was besieged during the War of Shadows. When Marth's retinue was cornered by Gra reinforcements, the player must chose a sacrificial decoy to ensure the rest successfully flee. Canonically, Frey was that decoy.
Appearance[]
Frey is a middle-aged man with short dark-blue hair and beard. He wears a dark blue cape over silver armor with dark grey accents.
Personality[]
Like all knights of Altea, Frey is fiercely loyal to his country and liege. So deep is Frey's fealty that he is content with dying if the circumstances insure the survival of his lord. This self-sacrifice extends to his comrades-in arms as well, as he accepts the role of instructor to future knights when no one else could.
Biography[]
War of Shadows[]
At the dawn of the War of Shadows, much of Altea's army marched to battle alongside their King Cornelius to combat the aggressive Dolhr Empire. Frey, however, was one of several soldiers who stayed behind to protect Altea castle; this meager group was assisted by a squadron from the allied kingdom of Gra. Unbeknownst to Altea, Gra betrayed them to Dolhr, and that squadron moved to claim the castle in the Empire's name as well. At the orders of Princess Elice, Frey and fellow knight Abel joined with Frey's commander Jagen and the tactician Malledus to help her brother Prince Marth escape. After successfully exiting the castle, this group encountered by Abel's good friend Cain, who returned from the battlefield to deliver a dying Cornelius' final message to Marth. However, soon after Cain arrived, reinforcements from Gra and Grust led by the former country's king, Jiol, cornered the group. Malledus grimly determined that their retinue was hopelessly outmatched, and the only way to ensure Marth's survival was for one of his retinue to act as a decoy and distract the enemy long enough for the rest to flee. With a heavy heart, Marth selected Frey as the decoy, but Frey was more than willing to die in Marth's service, and quickly disguised himself as the prince. Frey mounted his horse and rode South, diverting enemy attention and allowing the rest of the group to reach a boat prepared by the knight Draug. While the others reached the island nation of Talys, the reinforcements realized they were duped, and Jiol angrily demanded Frey's painful death. The soldiers obliged.
War of Heroes[]
After a savage beatdown, Jiol's army left for dead, but he miraculously survived, albeit with serious wounds and amnesia. Frey spent the rest of the War of Shadows living under a different identity, but managed to regain his memories after Marth ended the war by slaying Dolhr's leader, the Earth Dragon Medeus. With his old identity restored, Frey immediately returned to Altea castle to resume his service, becoming an instructor for knights in training. One such group of recruits would became Altea's 7th Platoon, consisting of Kris, Luke, Roderick, Cecil, and Ryan. This platoon was selected to join Marth in a mission to end a rebellion in Grust, which was occupied by the Archanean Empire, newly formed by Marth's good friend Hardin. Unbeknownst to Marth, Hardin was corrupted in the ensuing years, both from personal anguish following his marriage to Archanea's Princess Nyna, and the Darksphere secretly gifted by Dolhr's Dark Pontifex Gharnef. With Hardin's buried resentments toward Marth now inflamed, he plotted Altea's destruction and used the Grust insurrection to deprive the country of its strongest knights. All Hardin needed after was a pretext to declare war, which he got after Marth defied Grust's cruel occupying leader, Lang. When the Archanean army besieged Altea castle, Frey was one of the few occupants who managed to escape. He rode to Grust and reunited with Marth as the latter prepared to enter Olbern Keep and end Lang's reign of terror. After Lang's defeat, Frey accompanied Marth in his war against the Archanean Empire, and later his campaign against a resurrected Gharnef and Medeus. After the war's end, Frey returned to Altea castle and dutifully continued instructing future generations of knights.
