Frieren is the titular main protagonist of the adventurer fantasy 2020 manga series and 2023 anime series, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.
She is an immortal elf who goes on a quest to kill the Demon King alongside the Hero Party; Priest Heiter, Warrior Eisen, and Hero Himmel. After her journey alongside her party came to an end, 70 years later, she is asked by Heiter to take care of an orphan he found, Fern, who would later form a new party with her alongside Stark, the apprentice of Eisen.
She is voiced by Atsumi Tanezaki in Japanese (who also voiced Anya Forger in Spy × Family and Iroha Inukai in Wonderful PreCure!) and Mallorie Kodak in English (who also voiced Nia Honjou from the Date A Live series).
Appearance[]
Frieren is a short elven woman with silver hair tied in pigtails at the back of her head and emerald-coloured eyes. As an elf, she has long sharp ears with red earrings. Her typical outfit is a white mage robe with golden borders, leggings, and brown boots along with a black and white-stripped shirt underneath. Her legs wear black leggings and a pair of brown boots.
Personality[]
Regardless of being someone with a lifespan that lasts several centuries, throughout the evolution of the civilization of mankind, Frieren was left with a skewed sense of time; she often struggles to rise early and comprehends human time passing differently. Frieren possesses a relaxed disposition, but her distant demeanour shrouds her in questions for her allies, Heiter remarks that humans struggle to grasp the thoughts of an elf. She decided to get closer to humans as she witnessed the death of one of her party members, Himmel.
“ | To her, 50 years or 100 years might be nothing. | „ |
~ Heiter guessing her habit caused by her long lifespan. |
Although, not often showing any kind of emotions, Frieren does appear to show her coward side when she gets stuck by a mimic throughout the series. Due to living for over centuries, she also mentioned that the ten year of adventure alongside the Hero Party felt short for her, which surprised the rest since their adventure for over a decade.
“ | That girl traveled with Himmel the hero? How come she doesn't look sad in the slightest? So hearltess. | „ |
~ Some humans attending Himmel's funeral. |
Even at Himmel's funeral, Frieren remained expressionless, causing the humans attending the event to question how does she not show the slightest emotion. However, as she think back of her journey alongside Himmel and the rest of her party, she began to question why did she not try to know him better as she shed her first tear in the story, showing that she does in fact a certain level of emotion inside. Her ageless body lead her to develop many types of habits, whether it is bad or good ones. She has immense patience in searching for something, even if it seems that it does no longer exist such as her research for the blue moon weed that lasted half a year alongside Fern. Fern states that she is willing to search for over decades in order to find the flower. She also has a habit of not being able to wake up earlier, another habit of her immortality.
When trying to hide something, Frieren apparently has difficulty at lying when she is being asked about what she intends to do. As noted by Fern, this trait can easily be seen when she makes a somewhat awkward facial expression especially in her eyes, which are closed in a strange way.
In rare moments, Frieren will even make a troubled face, presumably due to struggling at making decisions. She shows no fear while interacting with scary-looking adventurers when she interrogated them about dessert joint despite the place was filled with similar-looking individuals.
When she arrived at Graf Granat's Domain, she carelessly attempted to unleash her magic when she was alerted after sensing the presence of demons, leading a guard to restrain her on the floor before she could actually have fired her attack at the demon he sensed, Lügner. Frieren, however could not care less when she being suddenly restrained then grabbed by the guard. Lügner points out the bloodlust in her cold-looking eyes as she menacingly stared at him. During her first confrontation in the last five decades against Aura, Frieren remained collected, knowing that she has far superior spells, powers, and experiences than the demon. She began to show more of her cold side as she commands Aura to kill herself unfazed. This overall show her strong xenophobic to demons, reacting to attack almost as an instinct once a demon is on sight.
As the story progresses, Frieren began to show more of her emotion, including occasionally smiling a bit. Despite threatening to kill Denken to Laufen during the First-Class Mage Exam for her to give back her stile bird, Denken claimed that Frieren is not ruthless enough to kill him.

Along with the Hero Party, she was also able to break through the impenetrable barrier of the Immortal Böse.
Trivia[]
- "Frieren" is a German word, which signifies "cold/frost" or "freezing" .
- A running gag of Frieren over the series is that she often gets herself stuck in a mimic, a living chest with a mouth filled with sharp teeth that appeared harmless. Regardless of having gotten herself stuck in a mimic many times throughout her journey, she will never hesitate to try to open a chest because of that supposed 1% chance that the chest may actually contain a treasure inside instead of being a mimic.
- Frieren's food of choice in a restaurent is often a bunch of steak.
- It could be assumed that Frieren's earrings were given by Flamme, her master, however Frieren's earrings does not have golden pebbles at the bottom unlike Flamme's.
- In the "Top Ranking of Figures Japanese Kids Most Admire in 2023" survey, Frieren is one of the two anime characters present, ranked as 10th on the list along with Ai Hoshino, the titular character of Oshi no Ko, ranked 3rd on the list.[1]
