~ Fu fighting King Bradley |
Fu was a supporting character of the manga and anime series Fullmetal Alchemist. He was a retainer of the Xing Empire's Yao clan, a personal bodyguard of Prince Ling Yao and the grandfather of Ling's other bodyguard, Lan Fan. Particularly wise and exceptionally skilled, Fu serves as a valuable asset to Prince Ling by utilizing his advanced combat abilities, strategic and observational expertise, and fierce loyalty to the Yao in a great variety of situations.
Appearance[]
Fu was an elderly man with heavy wrinkles, gray spiky hair and a bushy mustache, and of small stature. His attire was identical to Lan Fan's, consisting of a full black outfit with fingerless gloves, black boots, and armor around his torso, back of his hands, and top of his boots. He wore a white bandana wrapped around his forehead and his mask was similar to Lan Fan's, except his only covered to his nose and bore the Yang half of the Yin-Yang symbol.
Personality[]
Fu was a serious and stern man, valuing the life and safety of his prince over his own. He was highly devoted to Ling's dream, willing to lay down his life if it meant Ling could find a claim to the throne. His stern nature was also directed towards his granddaughter, such as slapping her for Ling's disappearance after becoming the host for Greed and failing to protect him; losing her arm in the process. However, Fu cares for her dearly, as shown by him shedding tears over the loss of Lan Fan's arm and becoming enraged at Bradley upon discovering he was the one who took her arm from her.
Abilities[]
Fu is an incredibly skilled combatant, using Xingese martial arts and frequently using Xing-made explosives. He is also a master of kunai knives. Fu is skilled enough to hold his own against King Bradley, individually and fighting alongside the second Greed. Fu, like most Xingese warriors, has the ability to "sense" other people's chi. This gives him a massive edge over most opponents, being able to sense them before seeing them. He is a proficient acrobat, being able to easily sit on a speeding train carriage's roof and perform great feats of agility, despite his advanced age. Fu is also remarkably fast, shown when he was able to easily overwhelm Alphonse, and even King Bradley found Fu's speed impressive in spite of the latter's age.
Trivia[]
- Fu's mask has the Yang half of the Yin-Yang symbol marked on the forehead. The Yin half is on Lan Fan's mask.
- Fu's final appearance (where Ling and Lan Fan both take him back to Xing) is cut from the 2009 anime. No reason is given as to why, but many speculate that Nana Mizuki was too busy to record any of Lan Fan's lines (hence she had no lines in the final episode) and it was Lan Fan who said: "Let's go home now, Grandfather." The anime does however, add a line by Ling who states they are heading home quickly so they could bury Fu.
- Fu is included putting his left hand in the group picture on the cover of Chapter 107.
- Fu bears a significant resemblance to Old Snake from the video game Metal Gear Solid 4. This is likely unintentional.
