“ | Let me take it from the top. Hello, I'm the Doctor. I'm a traveller in Space and Time, and that thing buried down there is called a TARDIS. Time And Relative Dimension In Space. You're going to love this. | „ |
A previously unknown incarnation of the Doctor, dubbed the Fugitive Doctor, appeared as a supporting character in The Thirteenth Doctor's era in the Doctor Who franchise. Existing at an unknown point in the Doctor's life, to hide from her Time Lord employers, she took on the identity of ordinary human Ruth Clayton.
She is portrayed by Jo Martin.
History[]
At some point, the Doctor was forced to work as an enforcer for the Time Lords agency, the Division. Working for the Division forced the Doctor to make difficult moral decisions. They used her to effect the capture or even execution of those wanted by the Division. Described as a job "you can never leave", the Doctor found her escape attempts fruitless.
Once, Upon Time[]
During her time with the Division, the Doctor shared a long conflict with the Ravagers Swarm and Azure. As seen in Flux: Once, Upon Time, the Doctor led a squadron, which included Karvanista among it's number, in the final battle with the Ravagers, which was promised to be her final mission. On the planet Time, in the Temple of Atropos, the Doctor found herself experiencing visions of a much later incarnation, who was reliving the event as part of a temporal storm. The Doctor managed to smuggle the temporal beings the Mouri within the Ravagers own Passenger, and captured them.
Fugitive of the Judoon[]
The Doctor eventually went on the run from the Time Lords. Eventually, she hit upon a plan to hide as a human with a Chameleon Arch. Along with her companion "Lee", she underwent the procedure, becoming Ruth Clayton, with Lee acting as her husband. Taking up residence in Gloucester, Ruth Clayton made a living as a self-employed tour guide. She believed herself to be a 43-year-old human, and remembered being brought up by her parents in a disused lighthouse.
The Toymaker later implied that he had a hand in creating the history of the Timeless Child and the Fugitive Doctor, as he claimed to have turned the Doctor’s past into a "jigsaw".
Trivia[]
- Jo Martin is the first person of colour to play a mainstream version of the Doctor.
- To ensure ambiguity of where the Fugitive Doctor occurs in the Doctor's lifetime, Big Finish's Fugitive Doctor audio series, beginning with Most Wanted, she is seen as having had memories of her past removed by The Division.
- Indeed, while she does not recognise the Daleks during Fast Times, it is open ended whether this is because this occurs before her first encounter with them, or due to her memories being suppressed.
