Lady Furina de Fontaine is a playable major character in the 2020 action role-playing fantasy video game Genshin Impact.
Furina is the human vessel of the Hydro Archon Focalors, who split her divinity away from her human body as part of a plan to deceive the Heavenly Principles and save Fontaine from destruction. Cursed with immortality by her divinity, she served as a figurehead playing the role of Hydro Archon for centuries.
Furina is voiced by Chen Qien in Chinese, by Amber Lee Connors in English, and by Inori Minase in Japanese. Connors has also voiced Pieck Finger in Attack on Titan, Ms. Joke in My Hero Academia, Fortuna in Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World, and Brandish μ in Fairy Tail. Minase has also voiced Rem in Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World, Hestia in Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, Chino Kafū in Is the Order a Rabbit?, Liscia Elfrieden in How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom, Reina Aharen in Aharen Is Indecipherable, and Chito from Girl's Last Tour.
Appearance[]
Furina has fair skin and heterochromic eyes with her right eye having a light blue iris and deep blue droplet-shaped pupil, while her left reverses the color scheme. She has mostly grayish-white hair with light blue undersections sectioned into two parts: a short neck-length bell-shaped bob, and waist-length locks that are tied into twin tails with several seemingly glowing blue streaks. A single lock of hair also sticks up and outward to her right, opposite her hat which tips to the left.
Furina's outfit features a dark blue suit-like outfit over a white vest with a jabot, all decorated with multiple blue cut stone accessories that resemble water droplets at several places. A blue sash is laid over the white vest, tied into a bow and pinned with a large blue gem in the center, which is later replaced by her Hydro Vision. Her cuffs are folded back, hemmed into brass-like pieces, revealing a deep blue frill ending her sleeves. She also wears a dark blue top hat tipped to the left of her head, the hat decorated with metal flourishes giving a the hat a crown-like appearance, in addition to including her emblem on the top surface. Multiple other fabric ornaments decorate Furina's outfit, including blue and white pieces of cloth on her trailing behind her waist and hat.
She wears a black glove on her right hand and a white one on her left. Furina wears short white pants appended with black bands wrapping her thigh. She wears dark heeled leather shoes, with her emblem emblazoned on the bottom of soles. White ruff-like collars also wrap around her ankles.
Personality[]
Flamboyant and imprudent, Furina lives for the thrill of the courtroom, often speaking in a manner peppered with bravado and drama. She is impatient and has a childlike temper, and she will occasionally make judgments that she doesn't mean, which Neuvillette frequently has to control while conducting a trial to avoid complications. While she enjoys being in the spotlight, she only does so when it is focused at her positively, breaking down in complete shambles should something go out of plan and will try to save face at the first possible opportunity.
However, it was later revealed that Furina isn’t the true Hydro Archon, but rather the Hydro Archon's powerless vessel. Focalors, the successor of Egeria, had separated her divinity from her body and spirit; Furina was the Archon's body and spirit but had no powers. Focalors used Furina as a way to deceive the Heavenly Principles in order to prevent the result of the prophecy regarding Fontaine from becoming a permanent reality. Furina was tasked with maintaining the guise of an Archon and cursed by Focalors so that she could not die nor pursue her own happiness so long as Focalors lived. As a new "human," she had difficulty taking the role but eventually mastered it. Aware of the prophecy that would doom Fontaine, Furina assumed the role of Hydro Archon for 500 years; while she was successful in this task, it wore her down mentally so that she suffered from severe self-esteem issues and paranoia, as shown when the Traveler convinced the court audience that she was a fraud in her trial. Despite being undying due to being cursed by Focalors, Furina remained fearful of situations that seemed deadly, as she pleaded Arlecchino to not kill her during an attack for the Hydro Gnosis, and was hesitant in dipping her hand into Primordial Seawater to prove whether she is the Hydro Archon during a trial.
Upon being freed of her role as an acting Archon, Furina had returned to her normal self, but without the burdens associated with her role. While she is still flamboyant and dramatic at times, she now displays a softer, humbler and insecure side of herself. At first, she struggled coming to terms with her role being over, believing that her newfound freedom meant that she was no longer needed, and had trouble reaching out for the people closest to her while she was the Archon, such as Neuvillette and Clorinde. She also planned to retire from the stage despite her love of acting, finding it difficult to take on different identities after having to sustain such a heavy burden for centuries. After being comforted by the Traveler, Neuvillette, and Navia as well as getting invited to a party by Clorinde, she realizes that her journey of self-discovery means that she no longer has to live her life in solitude. Eventually, she is able to regain the courage to move forward and go back onstage for the first time since her abdication, and learns to accept her identity not as the Hydro Archon, but simply as herself, culminating in her receiving a Hydro Vision.
Powers and Abilities[]
Despite being Focalors' human half without her divine powers, she still possesses some unique abilities prior to receiving her Vision:
- Acting Mastery: Being tasked to maintain an Archon persona by Focalors, Furina was successful in deceiving all in her assumed position of leadership for 500 years, only getting exposed once she was put on trial.
- Enhanced Mental Stamina: Furina possesses a great deal of mental fortitude to keep acting as the Archon for 500 years, even when burdened with loneliness, isolation, and deprived from pursuing her own happiness, all for the sake of her people. Ei say that Furina's willpower has reach the level of the god.
- Immortality: She was cursed by Focalors with immortality; she cannot die in order to maintain her façade as an Archon until Focalors was able to fully carry out her plan.
By the end of her personal story quest, she was granted a Hydro vision and is now capable of wielding the power of water for combat.
- Hydrokinesis: The innate power given to her by her Vision, formerly her Gnosis.
- Arkhe Alignment Switching: By using her charged attack, Furina can switch between Ousia and Pneuma states in combat, changing her combat capabilities.
- Familiar Summoning: Through her Elemental Skill Salon Solitaire, Furina can summon Gentilhomme Usher (ball octopus), Surintendante Chevalmarin (seahorse), and Mademoiselle Crabaletta (armored crab) to her side to aid her in battle in consumption of her and other party members' health while she is in the Ousia state. Conversely, she can summon the Singer of Many Waters to heal nearby active characters while in her Pneuma state.
- Primordial Sea Manipulation: All Furina's hydro effects in her kit, her Salon Members, the Singer of Many Waters, the Stage of Foam, the bubbles of the Universal Revelry state, and the Hydro infusion of her normal attacks during "Center of Attentions", have the same purple, blue and pink coloration, and the starry and galactic appearance of the Primordial Water in the Primordial Sea.

Trivia[]
- She, Raiden Makoto, and Ei are archons that have human name call by Traveler and Paimon as their real original names. For Furina case, her human name also know and acceptable to use by her people. As people of Fontaine don't really worship her, just idolize her.
- She's the first character with significant different in body protrait in card and wish since Xiao.
- The name "Furina" was likely derived from Furrina, a deity associated with springs and bubbling water that was worshipped in the obscure ancient religion of Rome which predated the Roman pantheon.
- Furina is the first playable Archon who lose her divinity and become human, also the first one that cannot use power on her own and rely on Vision.
- Due to her losing her memory as a god when she was separated from Focalors, she doesn't mention the other gods in her voicelines. Instead, all the voicelines mentioning the Archons goes to Neuvillette who currently owns the Hydro Authority in Teyvat.
- Despite that, all the other Archons have voicelines mentioning Furina where they praise her for saving Fontaine, and the Fontaine resonance card Water and Justice still shows the silhouette of Furina.
- It's hinted that Furina's vision was given by Neuvillette rather than Celestia.
- Even though the title of Hydro Archon is gone for now, the game still treats Furina as the Hydro Archon, as her constellation has her face on it, her eyes glow in the same color of her element during her elemental burst, her skill have permanent uptime, her kit working along and based to the status connected to Hydro to both her damage and support, and she also has the ability to control both arkhes. Which for now in the story, only Neuvillette have the capacity to do but only when he obtained the Hydro Authority, and Focalors very likely had this ability when she was alive since she was the Hydro Archon with the Hydro Authority within her. However, her element is labeled as ??? and later "Vision" after finishing her story quest, also, her vision seems very special and unique, with an appearance that combines the appearance of a Pneuma Vision and an Ousia vision.
- Traveler and Wanderer also has their own face as constellation, it is implied that people with this type of constellation has more power to control their fate than people with animal or object constellations. However, Furina is still just a human with will power of a god.
- Oddly, her hair still glows inside the Opera Epiclese and Palais Mermonia. Her eyes also seems to glows in hydro color during her burst, a characteristic shared only by gods and archons.
- While Furina's model in beta version still has a vision, Furina's element in said version did say Gnosis for some reaon, contrast to the story how she no longer has divinity inside her for 500 years. Her first drip marketing also says Gnosis, but it's meant for preventing spoilers. However, the beta version is not meant to be shown in public. The reason behind this is currently unknown.
- Owing to the biblical metaphors of the Fontaine Archon Quests, she represents the Son of the Trinity, Jesus Christ, like Kyuusyou from Gun Girl Z, and Elysia from Honkai Impact 3rd, while Neuvillette serves as the Father and Focalors serves as the Holy Spirit
- Furina bears a passing resemblance, and almost being a perfect parallel and counterpart of Sin Mal, a recurring character from Honkai Impact 3rd as well as its predecessor Gun Girl Z. They share physical characteristics such as being teenaged-looking girls with heterochromia, short wavy hair with same long bangs and same prominent ahoge/antenna, they both using a very similar ouji fashion outfits, with frilled, long-sleeved tops and short shorts that give them leg focus, and both holding important accessories to them in the same place, Sin holding her clock in the same place that Furina holds her vision, and both using similar weapons, Furina being a sword user, and Sin using some kind of clock-hand blade/sword, both having a fantasy or wonderland aesthetic extremely present in their contents, like in Furina's teaser, and Sin Mal backstory. Personality-wise, they are also quite difficult to get along with, but originally both being very innocent and sweet persons, but that always end up with very "unique personalities", and both have the duality motif in their character stories, with Furina being a split of Focalors' body from her divinity, and Sin having a Stigma inside her that becomes her alter-ego manifesting as her shadow, or much times appearing in the mirror, just like Furina first saw her other half, and curiously, sometimes the other Sin is represented with younger Sin's image when she had long hair, the same way Furina's divine half has long hair, while Furina has short, and although they don't share the same names, Furina/Focalors already was referred as "Sinners" in the story.
- In the Japanese dub of Chapter IV Act I prior to the 4.2 update, the dub script misspelled the word for glass "グラス", as "グロシ," which was read by Furina, became a meme among the player base, in addition to different intonation to the final sentence.
