Future Mai is the tritagonist of the "Future" Trunks Saga in the manga/anime martial arts Dragon Ball Super. She is the future counterpart to Mai.
She is voiced by Eiko Yamada in the original Japanese and by Colleen Clinkenbeard in the English dub, the latter also voiced kid/preteen Gohan in Dragon Ball Z Kai, Monkey D. Luffy in One Piece, Riza Hawkeye in Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Erza Scarlet in Fairy Tail.
Appearance[]
Compared to the Mai from Dragon Ball, Future Mai is a young-looking and tall woman with fair skin with black hair along with bangs. Unlike Mai's older appearance, She has big black eyes rather than her blue-eyes (probably she has contact lenses) and she doesn't have make-up on. She wore the same long, blue jacket but the star logo on each part of the jacket is yellow instead of grey and her pants is yellow than beige.
Like her main timeline counterpart, Future Mai's youthful appearance is the result of youth granting wish Future Pilaf made. In a special chapter of Dragon Ball Super manga describing this event, shows that before her transformation Future Mai was a middle-aged woman, somewhat similar to how Present Mai appeared in the beginning of Dragon Ball GT.
Personality[]
In this timeline, Future Mai is much more kind and selfless than her Present counterpart. Mai is very caring towards animals and others, by giving food to Future Scratch and insisted that Trunks eat the can of food given to him. Despite their past history, Mai respects Future Bulma and her present counterpart, as well as Vegeta and Goku (the former two for their knowledge and the latter two for their fighting skills).
She has strong leadership skills, being widely considered as the troop's morale, as she never gives up even in the face of despair. She has extraordinary stamina and willpower, as she continues to restlessly battle the evil Goku Black, never expressing fear at his overwhelming power, although does indicate shock at his constant survival and feels fear for her comrades. Mai cares deeply for the people she rescues and after Zamasu had exterminated the rest of humanity, Mai angrily shoots at the bodiless entity continuously until running out of ammo. When Whis tells her and Trunks that he is going to alter the future, Mai becomes happy at the thought of seeing her friends again.
Mai has a good relationship with Trunks (even putting him over herself), believing him to be the final hope for their future and has saved his life on several occasions. After reuniting with him, Mai teases the weeping Trunks by saying that men shouldn't show their tears. She provided emotional support to Future Trunks, helping him overcome his exhaustion and battle weariness; she encouraged him to restore belief in himself, too. Whenever a topic of her relationship with Trunks was brought up, she denies it while at the same time blushing, with her body language implying there are layers beyond friendship. Another instance was when Bulma jokes about her future self becoming a grandma, much to their embarrassment.
Dragon Ball Super[]
Background[]
Future Mai's life was the exact same as her present counterpart's until Age 767 when the world was put into the ruin from the Androids. Just like in the main timeline, she and the rest of the Pilaf Gang were turned into toddlers by Pilaf's wish for youth from Shenron. However, in this timeline their wish turned into the last one Shenron has ever granted, as mere few minutes later Future Piccolo died and the Dragon Balls permanently turned into stone. The fate of Pilaf and Shu remains unknown, but Mai survives the Androids' rampage and regrows into a young woman.
"Future" Trunks Saga[]
Future Mai scouts regions to check they are free from Goku Black, as well as to salvage resources and find hideaways for other survivors. Mai covers for Future Trunks, seemingly sacrificing her life in process, as he uses the time machine to go back in time, aiming to recruit Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan.
Goku Black and Zamasu are on a genocidal campaign called "Project Zero Mortals," however, they enthusiastically kill other gods if they try to interfere, with inactive gods also murdered just to prevent their potential challenge.
Future Trunks is relieved to meet Future Mai again upon return to the future, hugging her due to being so happy to see her alive and well. Goku and Vegeta are unable to defeat Goku Black and his duplicate future self, Zamasu, thus Future Trunks takes them all back in time to recoup.
Future Trunks, Goku, and Vegeta return yet again, along with Bulma. Future Mai is injured in an attack from Black. Future Trunks chews a Senzu bean, then feeds it to an unconscious Future Mai, restoring her; they plan for the next attack. Future Mai reassures the survivors, including children, Haru and Maki, while teasing Future Yajirobe, who Goku is also surprised to see still alive.
Goku, Vegeta, and Bulma need to flee to the past to recover for a final attack, while Future Trunks fights off both Goku Black and Zamasu; the resistance, led by Future Mai, provide cover to help Future Trunks to retreat to recuperate for further battles against the evil gods.
Goku, Vegeta, and Bulma reappear in the future, plus Gowasu (who was once Zamasu's mentor before his insanity) and Universe 7's own Supreme Kai, Shin, who arrived via a Time Ring.
As Goku and Vegeta battle Black, Future Trunks uses Roshi's Evil Containment Wave on Zamasu, trapping him inside a vessel; however, lacking the charm to complete the seal, Zamasu breaks free. Black criticises Zamasu, but agrees with his conclusion that the mortals are dangerous; Black and Zamasu use Potara earrings to fuse, becoming Fused Zamasu. The fused being unleashes natural disasters across the world; Future Mai struggles to keep the nearby human survivors safe.
After a brutal battle, Goku and Vegeta are able to use their own Potara earrings to fuse into Vegito, who ascends into Vegito Blue. Vegito Blue is able to hurt Fused Zamasu, but his regeneration powers restore any damage; eventually, his body becomes half-deformed, as the invincible kai half is becoming destablised due to the mortal body of Goku Black, but Fused Zamasu was otherwise undefeated. While holding Fused Zamasu at a disadvantage, Vegito's Fusion time limit is reached, allowing Fused Zamasu to defeat Goku and Vegeta.
Future Trunks is able to inspire the energy of every human left on Earth, as well as Goku and Vegeta, channeling the energy into a technique akin to the Spirit Bomb, however, manifesting along his sword, creating a large blade of light. Future Trunks impales Fused Zamasu, who is confused and distressed at so many individuals being able to work in harmony. Pulling the sword out, Future Trunks then cuts Fused Zamasu vertically in half; the mad god laughs as the remainder of his sanity crumbles, then he explodes into nothing.
Despite seeming like a triumph, due to the power of the invulnerability wish from the Super Dragon Balls, Zamasu's essence survived the death of his physical body; while utterly insane, Zamasu's consciousness embraced his incorporeal state so that it permeates across the Future World and its entire reality. He fires energy blasts upon the planet, killing all inhabitants left on Earth, leaving Future Trunks and Future Mai as the sole survivors of their timeline. In rage and despair, Future Mai fires her gun at the sky, which had become clouded by visages of Zamasu's face, however, the explosions do nothing. Zamasu's spirit threatens to breach through a gap in time to reach the Present Day Earth.
Goku remembers he has a button, which when pressed, will summon Zeno, the Omni-King creator and master of the multiverse. He presses it, but instead of Zeno, the alternate Future Zeno appeared, who doesn't know Goku, thus doesn't know they are friends. Future Zeno is disgusted at the omnipresence of Zamasu's malevolent spirit; Goku quickly assures him that they aren't responsible. Future Zeno prepares to react, thus the remaining group of Goku, Vegeta, Bulma, Future Trunks, and Future Mai take the time machine, while Gowasu and Shin use a Time Ring, all going back in time as to avoid Future Zeno's action - the complete erasure of the Future timeline, which also destroys Zamasu once and for all.
Future Trunks and Future Mai are distraught as everyone they had ever known in the time is both dead and wiped from existence. Despite time travel being a taboo for mortals, Beerus permits Future Trunks and Future Mai to jump one last time; the duo programmed coordinates to a future that is identical to their own after the androids, but will never been poisoned by Zamasu, as Whis will inform Future Beerus to stop Zamasu before he began his psychotic crusade.
Future Trunks farewells his friends from the past, saddened that he couldn't save his world, to which Future Mai attempts to console, with her support helping him try to stay optimistic about living in the branched timeline. They leave to a reality in which they will be duplicates of existing counterparts, yet accept it as the only way they can see their allies and loved ones again, even if not exactly, but they will have solace with each other.
