I am no stranger to the deaths of planets. Cyrene was my home. But when the need was evident, I did not hesitate to contact the Inquisition. By my hand Cyrene burned. The innocents who died to ensure Cyrene's secrets were sealed beneath ash still haunt me to this day. But I have no regret in this. The threats to mankind are eternal and ever-present, an ocean sinking for every draft in the dam. Cyrene's secrets now live solely with me, and so shall they die with me. As I travel there now to face the monstrosity that was once our Chapter Master, I am confident by this much. Whether I am victorious or slain, my sins will know retribution. Such is the final testimony of Gabriel Angelos, Captain of the Blood Ravens 3rd Company. Savior of Tartarus, bane of the Black Legion, servant of the Emperor.
~ Gabriel Angelos as Captain of the Blood Ravens 3rd Company

Gabriel Angelos, is a character in the Warhammer 40,000 franchise. He is the current Chapter Master of the Blood Ravens Space Marine Chapter and the former Captain of the 3rd Company of that Chapter. He serves as the main protagonist of the Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, a protagonist in the Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising and the Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II: Retribution. He also serves as the main protagonist of the Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III.

Angelos has played a pivotal role in some of the most significant events in the recent history of the Blood Ravens. These include the fierce confrontations against the forces of Chaos on Tartarus and Lorn V, as well as the triumph over a splinter Tyranid hive fleet and a Chaos invasion in the Sub-sector Aurelia of the Korianis Sector, which serves as the Chapter's main area for recruiting new Blood Ravens neophytes.

In a notable clash, Angelos and his faction of Blood Ravens successfully overcame the elements led by Kyras who had succumbed to Chaos, thereby safeguarding the settled worlds of Sub-sector Aurelia from an impending Exterminatus order issued by Inquisitor Adrastia of the Ordo Hereticus.

As a captain of the Space Marines, Angelos initially wielded a power sword and a Bolt Pistol. However, throughout his various campaigns, he enhanced his personal armament and now commands the master-crafted Daemonhammer Godsplitter, a formidable Force Weapon that allows him to vanquish the enemies of Mankind, even though he possesses no psychic abilities.

History[]

Cyrene[]

Like many members of the Blood Ravens, Gabriel hailed from the planet Cyrene, a source for many of the Chapter's Neophytes. He grew up in Cyrene alongside the Blood Ravens' Librarian Isador Akios, a bond of trust formed through their childhood friendship. Tragically, during the Blood Ravens' campaign on Tartarus, Akios succumbed to the influence of Chaos and ultimately betrayed both Gabriel and the Chapter. Even before reaching his teenage years, Gabriel had already established himself as an effective leader among his peers, successfully passing the rigorous Blood Trials administered by the Chaplains as an Aspirant.

Years later, commanding an entire company of Blood Ravens, Gabriel returned to Cyrene to supervise the Blood Trials and recruit new Chapter members. However, he soon sensed something was amiss during the proceedings and decided to halt them. Rushing back to his Strike Cruiser, he dispatched a coded signal from the system. Within a few months of sending the signal, forces from the Inquisition’s Ordo Malleus and the Imperial Navy arrived in orbit, executing an Exterminatus order that bombarded the planet for an entire week with Cyclonic Torpedoes, eradicating all life on its surface. Although all records regarding the incident and Gabriel's message to the Inquisition have been sealed, the weight of his actions haunted him forever, particularly during the conflicts on Tartarus.

Gabriel's burden of guilt stemmed from the initial response of the Imperial fleet that had arrived above Cyrene. They deployed a full Brotherhood of the Grey Knights, along with a unit of Storm Troopers and the Blood Ravens already stationed there, to eradicate a suspected Chaos infestation. However, what they discovered was not typical Chaos corruption but a world undergoing significant cultural transformation, eager to reject the Imperial Creed in favor of controversial ideas such as planetary democracy, free trade with xenos species, and the unrestricted practice of psychic powers without social stigma or fear of being sent to the Black Ships.

As Gabriel aided the Grey Knights, Imperial Guardsmen, and his fellow Space Marines in purging the world of its Heretics, he instructed a squad of Blood Ravens, led by Sergeant Ulrey, to locate a specific individual—his father, Esmond Angelos. A former soldier of the Astra Militarum, Gabriel believed that his father would remain a loyal defender of the Emperor’s ideals, regardless of the peculiar beliefs embraced by the rest of Cyrene. He sought to find and save Esmond before the inevitable fate of Cyrene was sealed. To his astonishment, when he eventually found his father, he discovered that Esmond not only supported the growing rebellion against the Imperium but was also recognized as one of its leading advocates for political reform.

Esmond had come to loathe the Imperium for various reasons, with the fact that his own son had become a Space Marine being one of his primary grievances. He denounced Gabriel as the Emperor’s executioner and lamented that he wished his son had died at birth along with his mother, rather than serve what he viewed as an immoral cause. Realizing that his homeworld was irretrievably lost in the Emperor's eyes, Gabriel uttered one last prayer for Cyrene before executing the Heretic who had once been his father, firing a bolt round to his head. The remaining Imperial forces then withdrew, and the planet was subjected to Exterminatus to prevent its dangerous ideas from spreading further into the Emperor’s realm.

Tartarus[]

On the desolate planet of Tartarus, Gabriel faced the ultimate challenge of his capabilities. He needed to delay an unstoppable Ork invasion long enough to evacuate the Imperial citizens while also hunting down and eliminating the Alpha Legion's Chaos Space Marines, commanded by the Chaos Lord Bale and Chaos Sorcerer Sindri Myr. The Chaos forces were in pursuit of an ancient artifact known as the Maledictum, which represented Chaos Undivided. Sindri managed to corrupt Chapter Librarian Isador Akios, leading him to betray his fellow Blood Ravens. Despite being tormented by his guilt, Gabriel executed Isador for his heresy and took charge of the Blood Ravens in their fight against Chaos.

Gabriel defeated Bale in single combat and later played a pivotal role in overcoming Sindri when the sorcerer ascended to a Daemon Prince of Chaos Undivided by harnessing the power of the Maledictum. After the battle, Gabriel destroyed the Maledictum in an attempt to eliminate the Chaos threat it posed once and for all. However, his actions unwittingly released a Greater Daemon of Khorne from its confinement, a consequence anticipated by the Aeldari Farseer Macha of the Biel-Tan Craftworld, who had assisted in combating the daemon. Farseer Macha had cautioned him against destroying the Maledictum, but he chose to shatter it with Godsplitter—a Daemonhammer bestowed upon him by Ordo Malleus Inquisitor Mordecai Toth, who had also arrived on Tartarus to investigate the source of the local Chaos corruption.

Godsplitter, created from the remains of an Aeldari Avatar of Khaine's sword, was a powerful weapon imbued with psychic energy, particularly effective against the daemonic forces of the Warp. Gabriel managed to escape Tartarus just before the subsequent Warp storm sealed him on the planet, vowing to confront the new Chaos threat that he had inadvertently unleashed upon the galaxy.
