Agent Gabriel Dean is one of the primary recurring protagonists in the Rizzoli & Isles series. Dean is an FBI investigator and recurrent colleague of Detective Jane Rizzoli, who is later the mother of their child. The two marry and, in spite of their careers, start their family and collaborate as they need be when their investigations cross.

Biography[]

The Apprentice[]

Dean is first introduced when Rizzoli is being stalked by a copycat killer of serial killer Warren Hoyt, "The Surgeon". The killer is an accomplice of Hoyt out to terrorize Rizzoli as retaliation for stopping Hoyt's crimes. She and Dean are originally oppositional, as Rizzoli gets defensive from Dean's authority and insistence she be pulled off the case, Rizzoli resolute that she won't be personally shaken too much to stop Hoyt and can protect herself. They grow to have a rapport, then a bond, and the two end up having a one-night stand. Rizzoli is narrowly attacked by Hoyt and his accomplice, but she stops them by killing the accomplice and reducing Hoyt to quadriplegia. She rebuffs Dean when he admits his feelings for her, and he leaves the city.

The Sinner[]

Rizzoli still hasn't called Dean back to sort out their relationship. However, she finds out she got pregnant with their daughter. She refuses to admit this, even considers not aborting her child. She says she's afraid of losing her independence to Dean, but Dr. Maura Isles, Rizzoli's closest colleague, surmises accurately she's also afraid of rejection. Dean gets pulled into the killings she's working on when one victims, Howard Redfield, was revealed to be a former VP of a major chemical company under federal investigation, in which Redfield became a witness. Dean finally confronted Rizzoli about her uncertainty, and she tried to push him away again, even after admitting she was pregnant. Dean again told her he loved her and wanted with her and be there for their child. Rizzoli finally admitted she loved him back, and the two of them got married.

Vanish[]

Dean is actively involved with hostage negotiations at the hospital where Rizzoli is due to give birth, when two people take her, several employees, and another patient hostage. He investigates the woman in the duo, who was brought to the hospital after being found in Hingham Bay and presumed dead, her life narrowly being saved on Dr. Isles' watch. He's calmed down by Rizzoli's former partner, Detective Thomas Moore, who says from his experience with his own wife, a survivor of "The Surgeon", he's intent on rescuing Rizzoli too. After identifying the negotiators, Rizzoli's name is leaked to the press, which, with her being a cop, puts her in danger. Dean is furious enough she slams into the cameraman working with the anchor who leaked her name, the news team not caring less. Dean even has to contend with Vince Korsak, a retired cop and friend of the Rizzoli family, being furious he wasn't informed, but they accept to work together, as they both want Rizzoli and the other hostages alive.

This is when the hostage-takers call Dean, saying Rizzoli told them about him and they want to report a federal crime. In spite of federal law enforcement prepping a raid, Dean agrees and enters the hospital to rescue Rizzoli. The duo release everyone except for Rizzoli and Dean, preparing to provide the evidence, but the raid team pumps fentanyl gas into the room, executing the two hostage takers. Rizzoli later gives birth, and the girl is named Regina, after Rizzoli's grandmother. Dena speaks with Dr. Isles about their relationship and family, joking Rizzoli wants to call their daughter Reggie. Isles tells Dean not to worry, and that Rizzoli's insecurities and flaws can be worked with because she's so honest about them, which will strengthen their relationship. Dean participates in the investigation into the crimes the hostage takers were trying to report, which are revealed to be covered up by federal level corruption. The team agrees to an alliance with the FBI and DOJ, and they successfully locate the remaining witness. When hired mercenaries attempt to kill Rizzoli and Regina, the witness shoots the one after them, and Dean and his colleagues arrest the remaining co-conspirators. He personally thanks the witness for protecting and saving their family.

The Mephisto Club[]

Dean is seen more so in his active parenting role in the novel while Rizzoli is investigating the latest serial killer on her roster. She asks him if he regrets a thing about marrying her, and he reassures her he loves every second of their marriage and family and finds it the best part of his life. He even jokes he can handle her parents and siblings, who see a shake-up when her father has an affair, so Dean is available as support and a voice of reason.

The Silent Girl[]

Dean tried to convince Rizzoli to drop the case of two murdered mercenaries, who were tied to high-profile contract killings when their prints popped up in Interpol databases. He was terrified with Rizzoli nearly losing her life to one, she'd be in even more danger going forward. Rizzoli refused and was intent on keeping to her own efforts to solve the case.

Die Again[]

Rizzoli calls Dean to get her in touch with his Interpol contact, Agent Henk Andriessen, stationed in South Africa. The couple traveled there to meet Henk and then Millie DeBruin, a British woman who was the only survivor of a tourist massacre in Botswana. They hoped to convince her to come to Boston to track the killer, who they never knew was local zoologist Dr. Alan Rhodes. When they brought her to America for her statement, and then she killed Rhodes in a narrow attempt on her life, Dean was with Boston PD when the found Rhodes' lair, with his costume, murder weapons, and the souvenirs of the victims he stole.

I Know a Secret[]

Dean is again seen more in his parenting role, reading Regina a bedtime story while Rizzoli consults the murders in the novel with Father Daniel Brophy. As Dean since bonded with Rizzoli's family, in spite of their problem dynamics, he agreed to help her pack and leave when Frank was becoming more demanding and disrespectful to her, which she was finally done with.
