Gail Platt is a fictional character and primary protagonist of the long-running British soap opera Coronation Street, having first debuted on 29th July 1974 and becoming one of the show's longest serving characters to date up until her departure on Christmas Day 25th December 2024 itself.

She is portrayed by Helen Worth.

History

Gail Potter arrived at Weatherfield in July 1974. She quickly her life there over the following years and is soon joined by her estranged mother Audrey Roberts.

By 1979, Gail had been dating local mechanic Brian Tilsley and the pair got married. This came with the reluctance of Brain's mother Ivy Tilsley, who distrusted Gail and it sparked a lengthy feud between them that lasted for over a decade due to the couple's marriage problems and Ivy's constant interference in Gail's life. It was then Gail gave birth to her and Brian's children, a boy named Nick and a girl named Sarah, during the intervening years of their marriage. However, Gail broke up with Brian after he cheated on her and the estrangement between them ended with Brain getting murdered in February 1989.

The follow-up of Brian's death saw Gail being comforted by fellow resident Martin Platt and the pair started a gradual romance. Gail gave birth to their son David on Christmas Day 1990 and a year later she married Martin after they proposed to each other. After overcoming various challenges throughout the course of their marriage, Gail split up with Martin after he cheated on her. This devastated David as he wanted them to stay together whilst Sarah was also unhappy, especially after she had just given birth to her granddaughter Bethany - which was most likely the biggest challenge Gail and Martin faced together.

In 2001, Gail met a financial advisor called Richard Hillman and they started a relationship together. The pair soon got married in July 2002 and things looked so promising for Gail. However, in February 2003, she discovered that Richard was a serial killer who had been responsible for the deaths of three people. She called him "Norman Bates with a Briefcase" and ended their marriage. Weeks later, Richard kidnapped Gail along with her children and Bethany before driving them into a canal; everyone survived except Richard after he drowned in the end.

From then onwards, Gail became involved in numerous other events that included reuniting with her long-lost father Ted Page; a major rivalry with her nemesis Eileen Grimshaw; subsequent marriages to both Joe McIntyre and Michael Rodwell that each ended with the two spouses dying of different circumstances; and another plight in which her half-brother Stephen Reid had caused chaos by murdering three people before eventually dying himself in the end.

In October 2024 she began a relationship with former neighbour Jesse Chadwick, after the pair had a fling in Thailand back in 2021. Gail suffered a heart attack but pulled through, and proposed to Jesse. On the eve of the wedding on Christmas Eve 2024, Gail suffered a vision where her late serial killer Richard Hillman came back from the dead. Richard taunted Gail over her relationship, claiming she misses the thrill of being with him. Gail dismisses Richard's claims and proclaims that she loves Jesse. She wakes up on Christmas morning and later tracks Jesse down saying she still wants to marry him. They get married and later leave the street together for a life in France.
