The Galactic Federation is a major faction in the Metroid franchise dedicated to protecting the universe from various interplanetary threats despite signs of corruption within the organisation itself.
History[]
Origins[]
The Galactic Federation was created in 2003 of the cosmic calendar, when representatives of various civilisations came together to establish an interstellar congress that would usher in an age of peace and prosperity across the galaxy. However, the prosperous trades made during this time eventually caused Space Pirates to attack and raid many spacefaring vessels, leading the Federation to form a police force that would counter the threat of raiders. Their efforts to stop the Space Pirates proved problematic as they would lose track of criminals who would escape into the vastness of space. In order to remedy this, the Galactic Federation reached out to the galaxy's finest warriors for their assistance, offering great rewards for the capture of any Space Pirates they have located.
Metroid/Metroid: Zero Misson[]
As time went on, the conflicts between the Galactic Federation and Space Pirates continued to escalate, causing the Federation to send bounty hunter Samus Aran to infiltrate and destroy the pirates' headquarters on the planet Zebes. Although Samus would succeed in her mission, many Space Pirates still remained active to continue their operations elsewhere.
Metroid Prime Hunters[]
The Galactic Federation play a minor role during the game's events, giving Samus the mission to find the Alimbics' "Ultimate Weapon" and prevent its power from being misused. Federation soldiers also appear during the intro cutscene and the Federation itself is mentioned in relation to the bounty hunter Sylux, who operates against them and their allies.
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes[]
When Squad Bravo of GFMC Task Force Herakles goes silent for eight days on the planet Aether, the Galactic Federation send Samus Aran to investigate. She discovers that the entire squad has been slaughtered by creatures called the Ing and proceeds to fight against these monstrous beings to save Aether from destruction. After the Ing were eradicated, the Galactic Federation assisted Aether's Luminoth community in their rebuilding efforts.
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption[]
The Phazon-based entity known as Dark Samus takes control of the Space Pirates and launches an attack on planet Norion and the battleship G.F.S. Olympus that orbits it. Bounty hunters Samus Aran, Ghor, Rundas, and Gandrayda were already aboard the Olympus when the assault began but were ordered by fleet admiral Dane to focus on getting to Norion and assist Federation troops stationed there. The hunters were given orders to activate Norion's planetary Defence Cannon by reaching its Control Tower in order to stop a Leviathan Seed from spreading Phazon across the planet. Although they succeeded in their mission thanks to Samus, an encounter with Dark Samus at the tower renders them all unconscious. The Galactic Federation discovered that the villain had infected each hunter with a spore that produced Phazon in their bodies. Apparently unable to remove the spores, Federation scientists instead outfitted them with Phazon Enhancement Devices (or PEDs) that allowed the hunters to greatly increase their offensive capabilities by utilising their body's Phazon. Unfortunately, an unforeseen flaw in the PED's design would cause a tremendous Phazon buildup while using the equipment that resulted in the minds of almost every bounty hunter becoming corrupted by the substance. Samus was luckily spared of this fate, but was forced to fight her corrupted companions when they tried to destroy her in their deranged states.
Aside from the bounty hunters, the Federation's Aurora Units have also begun to produce Phazon because of a virus uploaded into them by Space Pirates. However, scientists already developed a cure for their condition which saved Aurora Unit 217 from corruption in the Elysia research station SkyTown. Eventually, Aurora Unit 217 discovers that the Space Pirates have hijacked and modified a Leviathan Seed so they can open wormholes leading to the source of all Phazon, a sentient planet called Phaaze. Admiral Dane has Samus take control of this Leviathan so the Federation fleet can use it to commence an assault on the pirates. Meanwhile, Samus uses their distraction to slip by onto Phaaze so she can find a way to destroy it.
Metroid Prime: Federation Force[]
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond[]
The Galactic Federation is set to appear in the 2025 sequel to Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.
Metroid 2: Return of Samus/Samus Returns[]
The Galactic Federation deemed the Metroids a threat to the galaxy and order Samus Aran to eliminate them all on their home planet of SR388. Samus manages to eradicate almost every Metroid on the planet but decides to spare an affectionate newborn Baby Metroid so the Galactic Federation could study it for medical purposes.
Super Metroid[]
The Baby Metroid was left in the care of scientists at Ceres Space Station, an affiliate of the Galactic Federation, until the colony was attacked by Space Pirates. The station was able to send a distress call to Samus Aran who was unable to stop the pirates from taking the Baby Metroid and destroying the station itself.
