Gale Hawthrone is one of the tritagonists of the Hunger Games trilogy and film series. He is best friends with Katniss Everdeen and harbors secret romantic feelings for her. When Katniss volunteers in the 74th Hunger Games hosted by the Capitol and fakes a romance with Peeta Mellark, Gale grows jealous and is eventually targeted by Capitol in order to threaten Katniss until he becomes a part of the rebellion to overthrow the Capitol.
Gale is portrayed by Liam Hemsworth, who also portrayed Billy "The Kid" Timmons in The Expendables 2.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Born in District 12, in Panem, Gale was the oldest child of his family with three younger siblings. At a young age, Gale lost his father who died in the coal mines of his district. After his father's death, Gale struggled to provide for his family as they were poor, causing Gale to start hunting for food illegally in the forest adjacent to District 12.
At 14 years old, he met Katniss Everdeen, who also lost her father. They cross each other's paths while hunting in the woods outside of District 12. Despite their initial misgivings about one another, the two slowly warm up to each other and become close friends. Gale would also come to develop romantic feelings for Katniss, but never had the chance to confess his feelings for her.

Gale is over six feet tall with olive skin, straight black hair, and grey eyes. He is nineteen years old in the Hunger Games series.
Skills and Abilities[]
Gale is an expert at snares and strategy. Later, he is able to transfer his skill in snares into a skill in designing military weapons and tactics.
Gale is also able to use a bow and arrow, though he is not as accurate or fast as Katniss. He is also proficient enough to hunt and defend himself, even being able to track and kill animals.
In Mockingjay, Gale used a Crossbow which was specially designed by Beetee.
Trivia[]
- According to Suzanne Collins, Gale was whipped forty times by Commander Thread.
- In the film adaption of Catching Fire, rather than getting punished and whipped for hunting illegally, Gale was whipped by Commander Thread by stopping a Peacekeeper from attacking an old woman.
- In the film adaptation of Mockingjay Part 2, Gale parting ways with Katniss is much more involved in comparison to the novel. In the novel Katniss quietly thinks on Gale's actions and ponders about whether or not it was the bomb devised by Gale that killed Prim. In the film, Katniss speaks with much more finality, driving Gale to tears as he apologizes to her, before telling him goodbye forever.
