“ | The name's Remy LeBeau. Le diable blanc. But you can call me the Gambit. | „ |
~ Gambit's introduction. |
“ | You know how long I've been waiting for this? Woo, I'm about to make a name for myself here. | „ |
~ Gambit's most famous quote, as he finally gets a chance to shine. |
Remy Etienne LeBeau, better known by his nickname The Gambit, is a supporting character in the 2024 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Deadpool & Wolverine. He is a mutant with the special ability to manipulate kinetic energy, allowing him to use his trademark playing cards as a formidable weapon, as well as his bo staff.
He was a part of the last members of the resistance against Cassandra Nova and her army, alongside X-23, Blade, Elektra, and Human Torch.
Gambit is portrayed by Channing Tatum, who also portrayed Duke in the G.I. Joe film series, Greg Jenko in the 21 Jump Street series, Joaquín Mondragon in The Book of Life, Migo in Smallfooot, and Alan Caprison in The Lost City.
Personality[]
Gambit has a jovial personality and has a knack for making jokes. He speaks with a Cajun dialect, and has a strong accent and a tendency to combine Cajun English with French, making him difficult to understand at times. Despite his lightheartedness and friendliness, Gambit is shown to be brutal in battle, using his ability to blow up people's body parts and organs. His brutality does not extend towards people who aren't posing a threat to him though, as he has a lighthearted attitude and is loyal to his friends in the Void.
He did threaten Wolverine upon finding him drinking his liquor without permission, though was more annoyed than angry, since Gambit destroyed the half-empty bottle, which showed it was more the principle than the alcohol that concerned him. He was visibly upset when he heard that Johnny Storm died, and luckily never found out that Deadpool indirectly killed him.
He and his comrades would routinely risk their lives fighting Cassandra Nova, despite Cassandra having unmatched psychic powers. His bravery finally paid off after he and Blade, Elektra, and X-23 allowed Deadpool and Wolverine to use Juggernaut's helmet to nullify Cassandra's powers, which gave Wolverine the chance to miraculously convince her to let them escape from the Void by appealing to her buried sentimentality.
Although they weren't able to escape with Deadpool and Wolverine, Gambit was shown smiling at them when they escaped, and continued fighting off Cassandra's henchmen. Their heroism was rewarded when Deadpool and Wolverine saved all timelines from Cassandra Nova soon after, and Hunter B-15 rescued them from the Void after Deadpool told her about them.
History[]
Gambit is a mutant who was banished to the Void at some point by the Time Variance Authority, who knows very little about his past; he had been in the Void for so long that he wasn't certain if was pruned or had been born there.
He became a member of a group called the Resistance to fight against the tyrant Cassandra Nova, a powerful mutant who rules the Void with her army of supervillains, and survive from Alioth, a force of nature that consumes people in the Void.
After he, Elektra, Blade, and X-23 find Deadpool and Wolverine, the six anti-heroes join forces and fight against Cassandra Nova, who is defeated and miraculously allows Deadpool and Wolverine to escape from the Void back to Deadpool's timeline.
Although he and his friends selflessly allowed Deadpool and Wolverine to escape without them, after Deadpool and Wolverine save the multiverse from Cassandra Nova, Hunter B-15 honorably frees Gambit, Elektra, Blade, and X-23 from the Void after Deadpool tells her he couldn't have done it without them. He is last seen walking on these dead body at Cassandra Nova's compound and seeing a unknown Sling Ring portal appeared at him, implying that he escaped the Void.
Powers and abilities[]
Gambit's main ability is his ability to manipulate kinetic energy. He uses this power most efficiently with playing cards, which he can throw at deadly speeds and can also make blow up. He is shown to have exceptional aim, reflexes, agility, and stamina in battle, while also being able to wield a bo staff in combat, which is imbued with kinetic energy to allow Gambit effectively hit people with super strength. He notably manages to throw a card at a bottle of liquor Wolverine was drinking from across a room, and doesn't lose any of his marksmanship abilities even while having to fight multiple people at once in both close quarters and long-ranged combat, showing that he is exceptionally seasoned in battle.
As a mutant, Gambit is gifted with enhanced stamina, agility, speed, strength, and reflexes, allowing him and his teammates Elektra, Blade, and X-23 to take on a militia of armed henchmen and even some other mutants at the same time, and somehow survive; it may be a mutant ability or his sheer willpower, but he could suffer being clipped by passing bullets and endure concussive impacts, yet still be capable of fighting to near peak performance.

Trivia[]
- Channing Tatum was originally casted to play Gambit in an unmade solo film for the character before the film was ultimately cancelled when 20th Century Fox was bought by Disney. - Gambit, along with Elektra and Blade, were originally casted to die in the film but the role was changed to being trapped.
- Deadpool notably can't understand a word he says, bluntly stating "I'm sorry, but whose your dialect coach? The Minions?"

- Because of the character's appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine, Channing Tatum has expressed interest in reprising the role and has even talked with Bob Iger and Kevin Feige to revive his Gambit project.
