Gamora Zen Whoberi Ben Titan, better known as Gamora, is a major character in the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame and one of the main characters of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
She is a variant of the original Gamora from an alternate 2014 who never participated in the hunt for the Power Stone, as the Avengers' time heist undid Thanos' decimation. After learning of how she became close to Nebula in the future, Gamora turned against Thanos to stop him. After Iron Man sacrificed himself to stop Thanos and his army, Gamora left Earth, leaving the Guardians to search for her.
She is portrayed by Zoe Saldana, who portrays Neytiri in the Avatar films, and played the original Gamora in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Nyota Uhura in the Star Trek films, and voiced María Posada in The Book of Life and Captain Celaeno in My Little Pony: The Movie.
Biography[]
Background[]
Gamora's past is similar to her future self, being born on the planet Zen-Whoberi to unnamed parents and witnessing their deaths at the hands of Thanos. Despite massacring's her species, Thanos spared the child, deciding to train her to become one of the deadliest women in the galaxy alongside his other adoptive children. Due to her merciless training, Gamora and her adoptive sister Nebula were given bionic enhancements to transform them into deadlier weapons.
Avengers: Endgame[]
Alongside her adoptive siblings, Gamora continued her servitude to Thanos by helping eliminate half the population on Korbin. After helping Nebula during the battle, they were tasked to return to the Q-Ship, as their adoptive father had found the location of the power stone. Thanos informed the two that they were going to be sent to obtain the stone with Ronan the Accuser, but his plans were halted when Nebula's synaptic drive showed a hologram of another version of her in their universe. Going through the recordings, they discovered that Thanos succeeded with his plans in the future, but a group of heroes known as the Avengers were intending to undo the decimation. After seeing his future self be killed for destroying the Infinity Stones, Thanos turned his attention to prevent the Avengers from undoing his work.
Gamora would meet the future Nebula, whom cryptically warned her that the original assassin met her demise by Thanos to obtain the soul stone. Following the destruction of the Avengers' compound, Gamora returned to Nebula, asking what became of their relationship in the future. Learning that the two became sisters in the end, Gamora frees the alternate Nebula, deciding to defect from Thanos to stop him. After rescuing Hawkeye and her Nebula's death, Gamora participated in the battle of Earth, fighting against Thanos and his army alongside the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy and other heroes. During the battle, Gamora encountered Star-Lord, and didn't believe that her original self became a relationship with him.
Upon Thanos and his army's death by Iron Man, whom sacrificed himself by using the Infinity Stones, Gamora watched as the others mourned him before leaving. After her disappearance, the Guardians of the Galaxy decided to search for her, but continued to protect the galaxy alongside their newest members - Thor and Kraglin Obfonteri.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3[]
Gamora joined the Ravagers, when Nebula asks her for help, because Rocket was critically injured by Adam Warlock. But Rocket has an implanted kill switch that would kill him, should the Guardians use any life-saving medical equipment. So Gamora helps them to break into the headquarter of Orgocorp to steal the file of “Subject 89P13”, the label of Rocket. Back on the ship they release that Theel deleted the pass key they need to disable the kill switch and stored it in an implant on his head a short time before they stole the file.
The Guardians want to fly to the planet Counter-Earth to go after Theel. Gamora demands to be brought back to the Ravagers, because this is not part of the deal anymore, but they refuse to risk Rocket’s life just to let her rejoin the Ravagers. So Gamora contacts Fitz-Gibbonok and sends him her position, but he was captured by the Orgocorp and killed by Adam Warlock, even though his mother Ayesha only asked Adam to show him that they mean business.
The Guardians arrive at Counter-Earth and Peter, Nebula and Groot go to meet with the High Evolutionary while Gamora, Mantis and Drax stay at the ship to watch over Rocket. Mantis and Drax decide to follow the other Guardians to the Arête, the ship of the High Evolutionary, and Gamora remains alone with Rocket. The High Evolutionary sends War Pig to capture Rocket, at the same time Adam Warlock arrives at Counter-Earth to capture Rocket too. Adam has to save his civilization by bringing Rocket to the High Evolutionary, so he wants to take Rocket from War Pig, killing him in the process, while Gamora can escape with Rocket.
At the same time the High Evolutionary decides to destroy Counter-Earth and kill the civilization on it, Gamora finds Peter and Groot who could take the implant from Theel. They escape from Counter-Earth and can finally disable the kill switch to save Rocket, while Nebula, Drax and Mantis stayed behind at the Arête. The High Evolutionary demands to receive Rocket or he will kill them. Peter calls Kraglin for help who arrives with Knowhere and shoots a hole in the Arête, so that the Guardians can infiltrate it.
They reunite with Nebula, Drax and Mantis who tell them about the Star Children who are going to die if they don’t save them. The Guardians defeat the High Evolutionary’s henchman and connect his ship to Knowhere to bring all children on board. Rocket stayed behind to save the captured animals too, but is attacked by the High Evolutionary. The Guardians find him and together they defeat the High Evolutionary. They save all the animals shortly before the ship falls apart. After that, Gamora says Good Bye to Peter and Nebula and rejoins the Ravagers.
Personality[]
Gamora was similar to her Sacred Timeline counterpart, however, lacking the experiences with the Guardians of the Galaxy, she never developed the softer attitude the deceased one had due to adventures with the team, and joining the Ravagers had exaggerated her underlying roughness; the rowdy nature of the Ravagers also made Gamora faster to resort to violence and even more impatient than before.
Like how original Gamora considered Peter Quill to be a buffoon, the timeline migrant Gamora feels this more strongly, and finds his lingering romantic interest for a different version of herself as a nuisance. However, after the battle against the High Evolutionary, Peter finally accepted his Gamora was gone, now merely wanting a friendship with variant Gamora, who accepts - and upon sharing a journey with him, she understands what her other self saw in him, though doesn't feel the same romantic love.
A detail she has identical to the old Gamora was her relationship with her sister, Nebula; which was complicated, but held real sisterly affection. Sadly, the variant Nebula she knew was killed by the main timeline Nebula, as the former couldn't escape the control of Thanos like her killer had managed. Despite Nebula killing Gamora's version, she never held a grudge, understanding it was an unfortunate necessity; Gamora actually considered the surviving Nebula as another sister, being the first person she felt attachment to in the timeline into which she had traveled.

Trivia[]
- It’s unknown how Gamora left Earth after Thanos's second defeat in Avengers: Endgame. It was possible the Ravagers took her with them when they left.
- The Guardians of the Galaxy do not always acknowledge this Gamora as one from an alternate timeline but rather just Gamora that does not remember them. The only one who really struggles with this concept is Peter Quill, out of grief, denial, and desperate desire for her to be the Gamora he loved being alive again.
