~ Gandalf when confronting Durin's Bane, also his most famous line.
Gandalf the White, formerly known as Gandalf the Grey, is the main protagonist of both LEGO The Lord of the Rings and LEGO The Hobbit, adaptations of the Middle-earth movies by Peter Jackson, and one of the three main protagonists, alongside Batman and Wyldstyle, of LEGO Dimensions. Like his films counterpart, he is an ancient Maiar and defender of the Middle-earth who seeks to defeat Sauron and his forces of evil.
In the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit video games, he was voiced through archive recording of Sir Ian McKellen's voice, who played him in the movies, while in LEGO Dimensions he was voiced by Tom Kane.
Gandalf the Grey plays the same role in the game's story as he did in The Hobbit trilogy, supporting Bilbo and Thorin's Company on their quest to Smaug's lair, but leaving to confront the Necromancer. Since only the first two movies were adapted, the game ends with Gandalf at Sauron's mercy, though given it takes place before LEGO The Lord of the Rings, he was most likely rescued by his allies as depicted in The Battle of the Five Armies.
LEGO The Lord of the Rings[]
Gandalf's role is likewise identical to his role in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He joins the Fellowship of the Ring, but sacrifices himself to defeat Durin's Bane, and eventually returns, reborn as Gandalf the White. In the bonus cutscene, accessible upon 100% completion, he joins Elrond, Galadriel, Frodo and Bilbo as they sail out of the Middle-earth.
LEGO Dimensions[]
LEGO Dimensions takes place in an alternate timeline where Gandalf's battle against Durin's Bane was interrupted by the arrival of an otherworldly hero, Batman. He rescued Gandalf and brought him back to the group, only for them to witness Frodo get abducted by Lord Vortech due to possessing the One Ring, a Foundation Element. Batman, Gandalf and Wyldstyle, a hero from yet another dimension, eventually wound up on the planet Vorton, and used the interdimensional gateway there to travel the multiverse, foiling Vortech and his allies' plans. Eventually, after saving Frodo, Gandalf took part in taking down the villain, imprisoning him in a distant dimension to ensure he doesn't threaten the multiverse ever again.
In the post-credit scene, the Fellowship still waits for Gandalf and Frodo to return. It's likely that they eventually did return, but with Gandalf's sacrifice averted and Sauron and Saruman displaced in time and space, it's unknown how the subsequent events would transpire.
Personality[]
In his early appearances, Gandalf's personality was practically the same as in the movies, that of a stern but ultimately pure-hearted and courageous wizard and mentor. In LEGO Dimensions, he exhibits far more humorous quirks, such as being confused by the modern technology he encounters in other dimensions.
