Garan is a matoran living on the island of Voya Nui and the leader of the Voya Nui Resistance. Garan and the other matoran were forced to survive on their own without toa or turaga to guide them after the Great Cataclysm destroyed the Southern Continent and cut off Voya Nui from the mainland.
When the infamous Skakdi criminals called the Piraka invaded Voya Nui searching for the mask of life, they used zamor spheres to enslave most of the Matorans, but Garan as able to escape and evade enslavement along with five others, with whom together formed the Voya Nui Resistance. Eventually, Garan and the Resistance were aided by a warrior named Axonn, the Toa Nuva, and later the Toa Inika in their struggle against the Piraka and helped the Toa Nuva and the Toa Inika hold off the Piraka to get the mask of life.
