You kept me waiting! I'm Eterna's Gym Leader, Gardenia, the Grass-type master! When I first saw you, I was convinced you'd find your way to me. My hunch was right on the money. You have a winning aura about you. So, anyway, this will be fun. Let's have our battle!
~ Gardenia introducing herself.

Gardenia (Japanese: ナタネ Natane) is the Gym Leader of Eterna City's Gym, known officially as the Eterna Gym. She is an expert of Grass-type Pokémon.

She was voiced by the late Chieko Honda in anime and Haruka Ito in game in the Japanese version, and Lara Starr Rigores in anime and Erica Mendez in game in the English version.

Biography[]

In the games[]

Gardenia was a citizen of Eterna City, she serves as the Gym Leader of the gym. The player meets her at Eterna Forest, just outside of the manor. Her Gym is filled with plants, and trainers that challenge her must search for, the player must find all of the Gym members before facing her. After defeating her, she will reward the player with the Forest Badge and TM86 (Grass Knot).

In the anime[]

Gardenia first appeared in the Eterna Forest arc episode, The Grass Type is Always Greener, where Ash had a practice battle with her, but forfeited as her skills were too overwhelming. Gardenia later guided Ash and co. about a Combee Hive and Amber Castle, before leaving. She later appeared to help stop Team Rocket from stealing the Adamant Orb while also clearing Nando when he was framed for the theft. Shortly after, Gardenia then got to battle Ash in an official Gym battle, where he emerged victorious. Later, in Once There Were Greenfields, Gardenia and James engaged in a Tag Battle against Ash and Dawn but lost. During the battle, Gardenia reveals that James' Cacnea can learn the move, Drain Punch, and offers to train Cacnea to make it stronger, to which James refused. However, because James did not properly train Cacnea and felt insecure, it constantly failed to execute Drain Punch correctly. After consideration, he tearfully gave away his Cacnea to Gardenia to master Drain Punch. It is later revealed by Barry, in Barry's Busting all Over, that she was successful, much to James' joy.

Appearance[]

Gardenia has brown eyes and short half-brown, half-black hair. She wears a black long-sleeved crop top that shows her midriff under a green cloak with a black "X" mark in the center. She wears brown knee-length khaki shorts and a black belt with a silver buckle around her waist. Finally, she wears green boots with black laces.

Personality[]

Gardenia is a friendly, charismatic and quirky trainer, who has a passion for plants and Grass-type Pokémon. She is cheerful and competitive, Gardenia sees good thing as a flower.

Gardenia's past is a mystery, some may say that she was related to the Old Chateau.

In the anime, she always goes goo-goo eyed whenever she comes across Grass-types and tends to cuddle them, even dangerous ones such as James' Cacnea and Carnivine. She also uses sunlight to power-up her Pokémon moves and attacks. This proves to be her undoing as Ash used Staravia to block the sun and blinded Gardenia's Cherubi giving Ash an easy win. She also is shortsighted as she has her Roserade to blind Aipom in the Gym Battle failing to realize that Aipom can sense and hear Roserade's whereabouts which also costs Gardenia her Gym Battle victory.
