Hero Overview

There's no way I'm lettin' you get back to the outside world. Things changin' ain't gonna make everyone happy. For a lot of us, nothing's ever gonna get better. I'm gonna protect them, you hear me? I'm gonna defend everyone and everything within my reach! I'll use all the power I have to become a barrier! A real barrier, one that can separate the inside from the outside! The Sanctuary, the people, the old hag, I'll guard 'em all! No one can do it but me. No one will know but me. And no one else needs to!
~ Garfiel.

Garfiel Tinzel, also known as the Gorgeous Tiger, is a major character in the 2014 Japanese dark fantasy light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World and its 2014 manga & 2016 anime television series adaptations of the same name, and a cameo character in the 2022 non-canon comedy crossover anime film Isekai Quartet: The Movie – Another World.

Tinzel was born to a beast-man father and human mother, making him a mixed-blood half-beast. Due to his blood, Garfiel could transform into a large feral tiger, although doing so took away most of his rationality. When he was very young, he was brought to the Sanctuary, a safe-haven for individuals with mixed-blood. However, Garfiel was unable to leave the Sanctuary, as a trial was needed to be completed if he sought to do.

Trapped in the barrier, Tinzel became a guardian of sorts for the Sanctuary, protecting it from any possible external threats. Despite his rather mature appearance, Tinzel was only fourteen-years old when he encountered Subaru Natsuki for the first time. Natsuki was an older adolescent boy from Japan, a nation that existed on another planet. Although Subaru was physically weak, Tinzel eventually grew to respect him, treating him like a boss.

After finally completing the trial of the Sanctuary with the help of Subaru and his crush Ram, Tinzel joined the Emilia Camp, a political faction dedicated to placing the half-elf Emilia on the throne of Lugunica. Because of his formidable battle strength, Garfiel became the faction's muscle, usually working under the behest of Subaru, Emilia's knight.

Garfiel is voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto in Japanese and by Zeno Robinson in English. Okamoto has also voiced Katsuki Bakugo in My Hero Academia, Rin Okumura in Blue Exorcist, Genya Shinazugawa in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Gladion in Pokémon: Sun and Moon, Accelerator in the A Certain Magical Index franchise, and Origami Cyclone in Tiger & Bunny. Robinson has also voiced Hawks in My Hero Academia, Genya Shinazugawa in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Gamma 2 in Dragon Ball, Zenon Zogratis in Black Clover, Goh in Pokémon Journeys: The Series, Carapace in Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir, Yuusuke Yotsuya in I'm Standing on a Million Lives, Zepes Indu in The Misfit of Demon King Academy, Cyborg and Steel in Young Justice, and Alan Albright in Ben 10.

History[]

Garfiel Tinzel was born to a beast-man father and human mother, making him a half-beast demi-human. His older half-sister, Frederica Baumann, had a half-beast father, meaning she was a quarter-beast instead of a half-beast. When Garfiel was a baby, he and his sister were brought to the Sanctuary of Kremaldy by their mother. The Sanctuary was a hidden village in the domain of the Mathers family that was primarily inhabited by demi-humans like Garfiel. The village was protected by a barrier that ensured no half-blood demi-human could ever leave the Sanctuary unless the Trial of the Sanctuary was completed.

Eventually, Garf's mother left the Sanctuary, leaving him and his sister behind. It didn't take long for Frederica to follow suite, as she was able to leave the Sanctuary due to her quarter-blood. The infantile Garfiel was left all alone, only having the residents of the Sanctuary to keep him company.

Quotes[]

Look at you, just waltzing out of there like that! You've got some nerve, outsider! Is this like a magmarin laughing when its full of wholes?!
~ Garfiel heckling Subaru Natsuki after the latter exited Echidna's tomb.
Ey, that's a nice ground dragon. Well you're a real good-lookin' girl now, ain't ya precious? Come on, I'm not gonna hurt ya! Just take a little nap! You better thank her for fightin' so hard for ya!
~ Garfiel commenting on Subaru's ground dragon Patrasche.
The name's Garfiel and the pleasure's all yours.
~ Garfiel introducing himself to Natsuki.

Powers & Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Earth Empowerment: A "Divine Protection" was a type of rare blessing bestowed upon lucky individuals at birth by the will of the world itself. Garfiel Tinzel had a Divine Protection known as the "Divine Protection of Earth Spirits." So long as any part of Tinzel was making contact with the ground, his stamina and wounds regenerated at an accelerated rate. His Protection also made him more resistant to the affects of earth magic. Additionally, he could manipulate the shape of any earth within arms length of him. Though fairly limited in its scope, his control over the earth around him was still a useful ability. For example, he could use the Divine Protection to cave in the floor beneath him, create a protective barrier around himself out of earth, or provide a boost to his jumps by having the earth beneath him propel him forward.
  • Energy Absorption
    • Magic: A prominent use for mana was magic, a practice that consisted of expelling mana out of one's own gate and manipulating it to create specific supernatural phenomena. The power of a mage typically depended on the size of their gate and the level of their arcane knowledge. Though Tinzel might've had a natural aptitude for earth magic, he instead focused his attention on learning water magic.
      • Healing: The magical element of water was linked to life and, as a result, practioniers of it could manipulate life itself in certain ways. The key application of water magic was healing. By forming a concentration of water mana around a wound, the caster could mend physical damage done to an organic body. The more skilled a water mage was, the quicker and more effectively healing magic functioned. Despite his lack of natural talent, Tinzel was an adept user of healing magic. Healing magic was the reason Tinzel focused his magical studies on water mana, as he believed it would be useful to the residents of the Sanctuary in an emergency.
    • Physical Augmentation
      • Superhuman Durability
      • Superhuman Speed
      • Superhuman Strength
  • Mind Control: Tinzel, after attempting the Trial of the Sanctuary, acquired the mark of the Witch of Greed Echidna which indicated him as an Apostle of Greed. Because of this title, Garfiel had the ability to command the many clones of Ryuzu Meyer created by Echidna, essentially affording him with a small army should the need arise. The clones would follow his orders unquestionably, as they were compelled to do so.
  • Tiger-Person/Human Hybrid Physiology: Garfiel Tinzel was the offspring of a human mother and a tiger-person father, making him a mixed blood hybrid of a human and a demi-human. Despite having the outward appearance of a regular human, Tinzel inherited a number of demi-human traits from his patrilineal line. He had a superhuman sense of smell that allowed him to pick up on scents from great distances away and acutely detect the differences in the odours that specific objects or people emitted. Tinzel's sense of smell could even detect the miasma produced by the Witch Factors.
    • Bestial Transfiguration: Due to his mixed tiger-person blood, Garfiel Tinzel was capable of transforming his own body into the form of an anthropomorphic, bipedal tiger. His transfigured form stood at twelve feet tall, was thick with muscle, and had sharp fangs and claws. Tinzel was so large while transfigured that he made the ground tremor with his footsteps. Performing and maintaining a transformation required magical energy, and as such it couldn't be used too frivolously. Tinzel saw a dramatic increase to his strength while transfigured, though as a result of his bulking form he also became slower. Those unexperienced in transfiguration often saw diminishments to their mental faculties while transformed. Tinzel was no exception, as he was prone to losing himself in anger whenever he transfigured. Alternatively, rather than a full transformation, he could choose to transfigure only specific body parts. For example, Tinzel could turn his fingernails into sharp claws or transform his whole arm. Partial transformation could be done quicker than a full transfiguration and required less magical energy.

Abilities[]

  • Master Fighter: In addition to his natural strength, Garfiel Tinzel was able to hone his skills in melee combat over the years despite his isolated upbringing. As a young boy, Tinzel discovered a book that detailed the training regime of the Hero Reid Astrea. He spent years replicating the training that Astrea put himself through, honing himself into a skilled unarmed combatant whose savage fighting style revolved primarily around instinct and was therefore difficult to analyse. He also made use of the enhanced physiology provided by his blood to his advantage in battle, performing feats that his opponents wouldn't think possible. Additionally, he would occasionally use his ability to partially transform to catch people off guard with heavy hits. His training matched with his power made him a combative prodigy who, by his early teens, was capable of duelling legendary fighters such as the Bowel Hunter and Eight-Arms.

Trivia[]

  • Garfiel's birthday was on the 12th of October.
    Garfield

Garfiel is often jokingly compared to Garfield.

  • An ongoing joke in the fanbase of Re:Zero is the the comparison between Garfiel and Garfield, the titular feline main protagonist of the American media franchise of the same name. As well as their names sounding similar, Tinzel resembled Garfield while transformed into his bestial mode. According to Tappei Nagatsuki, the author of Re:Zero, the similarities between the two characters are purely coincidental and Tinzel was not named after Garfield.
  • Nobuhiko Okamoto and Zeno Robinson, Garfiel's Japanese and English voice actors respectively, also share the role of Genya Shinazugawa in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Interestingly, there are several similarities between Garfiel and Genya: both characters have an estranged older sibling (Genya's is Sanemi Shinazugawa), both are notably mature-looking for their age, both have scarred faces, both have rough personalities, and both initially had a rocky relationship with their series' respective protagonists (Genya's is Tanjiro Kamado) before warming up to them.
