“ | Gaz: Normally, you crying on the floor is hilarious, but come on. Dib: It’s all my fault, Gaz! Why aren’t you saying ‘I told you so’? Gaz: 'Cause making fun of you is no fun when you’re this sad. You’re my brother, man. I only torment you because I know you can handle it. I’ve done way worse than throwing you in a space prison. This is nothing, get up! |

Gazlene "Gaz" Membrane is a major antagonist in Invader Zim Franchise. She is the cynical, menacing younger sister of Dib Membrane. She is very smart like her father and can show love. She sometimes has a major role like her brother.
Gaz is voiced by Melissa Fahn (who also voices Himawari Uzumaki, Rika Nonaka, Kristy Damon, Nene Amano, Edward Wong, and Dendy).
Personality[]
Gaz is best known for her rude, creepy, dark, cynical, and antisocial nature. Likewise, she is very indifferent as she could care less about his ravings of aliens and Bigfoot. She likes playing video games and eating pizza.
Her relationship with her brother, Dib Membrane, is quite disorderly, as Gaz hates her brother with every fiber of her being, and will go out of her way to punish him if he crosses her. Despite her enmity for her brother, she sometimes helps him in his quests, but only when it benefits her. Eventually, In Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus, Gaz reveals that she's only tough on Dib because she knows he can take it and shows that she actually does care about her brother, despite his eccentricities often irritating her.
While antisocial, Gaz is attached to her father, Professor Membrane, placing great value on the scarce time they get to spend together, and becomes agitated, if not furious, when that time is threatened to be cut. She seems to be more tolerant of Professor Membrane's quirks, even though they are similarly hyperbolic and insane as Dib's, but there are limits, such as the one time she ended up as a subject in one of his laboratories - albeit she became more enraged when she learned it was Dib's fault, not remotely blaming her father for his well-intended imprisonment of her.
Gaz is one of the only Earthlings to see through Zim's disguise, which she derides as terrible; unlike Dib, she is uninterested in fighting Zim since she can see his idiocy and incompetence, therefore doesn't believe he is a credible threat. Even so, she does occasionally aid in the battle against some of Zim's more successful schemes and real dangers like Tak, however, she is extremely begrudging about it, doing it more out of protecting her own hobbies, rather than defending humanity, which she considers selfish and stupid.
While Gaz typically shows her wrath to Dib, when another child took the new video game console she wanted, she pursued and tormented them into surrendering it to her; regardless of how far they fled, she was utterly relentless.
Appearance[]
Gaz is 10-12 Earth years old (during seasons 1-2, including the unfinished episodes). In the show, Gaz wears a short black dress with striped gray sleeves, striped reddish leggings, black shoes, and a necklace in the shape of a skull. This led many fans to assume she was a Goth, but the executive producer, Jhonen Vasquez, did not view her as such, so he redesigned her appearance for the comic series in an attempt to change her impression with the fans. In the comic series, she now wears a teal t-shirt with a white pixelated video game design of what appears to be a rabbit skull on it, a black skirt, and thick gray boots, a look that is carried over into Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus.
When she was younger, she dressed similarly, but with the addition of a pink hair bow. Though her dress style is vaguely gothic in appearance, as we mentioned beforehand, the executive producer does not see her as such.
Role in Invader Zim[]
Gas is Dib Membrane's younger sister. Like her older brother, Dib, she knows Zim's real origin, but unlike him, she doesn't much care, on the grounds that he really isn't very good at the whole world-conquering thing. That, plus she seems to be something of a misanthrope herself. In one episode, she once had a very hard time deciding whether to destroy all life on Earth or not, when putting a can of beans in a super-powered microwave. Mostly Gaz sticks to her video games and snarks at the insanity around her.
Abilities[]
Throughout the show, Gaz has been shown to have several strange powers. These include, but are not limited to: offscreen teleportation, levitation, and some sort of pyrokinesis. On more mundane levels, she has also demonstrated the ability to pilot Irken ships and perform some type of martial arts (described in the "Ten Minutes to Doom" transcript as "ninja moves").
Gaz seems to have genius intelligence on par, if not surpassing, her father and brother, since she was able to repair the salvaged alien spaceship that belonged to Tak - something Dib struggled with for weeks - and she was able to convince the A.I. based on Tak to be obedient, rather than violently defiant as it had been.
Although Steve Russel has stated that Gaz possesses some level of supernatural power (such weather manipulation to cause lightning storms when angry, and twisted her head unnaturally), Vasquez has gone on record stating that Gaz has no genuine powers of any sort, and that she is simply "someone you don't want to anger".
Trivia[]
- She was originally going to be not only one of Zim's allies in the conquest of Earth, but also a possible romantic interest to him (likely starting when she is a bit older, as she is a prepubescent 11-year-old child in the original pilot and the final series), but those plans were largely set aside.
