Gemstone Dolphins

The Gemstone Dolphins are the overarching protagonists in Barbie: Dolphin Magic. They are four gem-colored dolphins with special markings on their sides, each one being named after a different gem (Emerald is green, Ruby is pink, Amethyst is purple, and Topaz is orange). Island locals originally believed the Gemstone Dolphins to be just a myth. The dolphins are friends with a mermaid named Isla, who sweetly refers to them as her "puppies of the sea".

History[]

Upon spotting a boat, the Gemstone Dolphins Amethyst, Ruby and Topaz swam away, but Emerald was noticed by Pete. Emerald is quickly captured in a net, and Pete says he will get paid a lot for capturing him. The Gemstone Dolphins head to the surface and watch as Emerald is swiftly taken away. As they are separated, the dolphins' markings all vanish. Emerald is taken to Marlo's marine research facility to be studied, so Isla goes to rescue him from his enclosure. Meanwhile, Barbie, Skipper, Stacie and Chelsea arrived at the same island to visit Ken during his marine biology internship with Marlo.

At their resort, Stacie and Chelsea use a pair of binoculars to search around and spot Emerald at the facility. The girls reach Emerald and see that Barbie, Skipper and Ken are also there after following Isla in a speedboat. Isla hides while everyone observes Emerald curiously. Emerald sprays water at Rookie, only for Taffy to lick Emerald's nose, the dolphin squeaking happily in response. Barbie assumes Emerald likes Taffy and Ken explains that the existence of the Gemstone Dolphins is a well-known myth amongst the island locals, but he thought they were made up like the Loch Ness Monster. He adds that Emerald is in the pool enclosure for rehabilitating sick or injured animals, but Barbie doesn't see anything wrong with him.

Emerald tries to show everyone that he wants to leave, and they understand but Ken's attempt to free him are thwarted by Marlo, who claims to be a dolphin expert and says Emerald is under observation. Marlo lies that a vet is scheduled to check on Emerald the following afternoon, and that there's no such thing as Gemstone Dolphins. Everyone leaves, but Barbie returns after realizing they forgot the puppies.

Barbie meets up with Isla, who has transformed her tail into legs by using a magic necklace. Barbie stops Isla from freeing Emerald, but Isla explains that Emerald is green because he is a Gemstone Dolphin, rather than because he is sick. Barbie and Isla make a deal that Isla will wait for the vet to check Emerald, so long as Barbie doesn't tell Marlo about the Gemstone Dolphins' existence.

Marlo calls a man named Hugo and asks him to come in the morning instead of the vet, gleefully telling Emerald that he is going to make her a lot of money, Emerald backing away from her in fear. The next day, Barbie and Isla go swimming and encounter Topaz, Ruby and Amethyst. Ruby touches Isla's necklace, transforming Isla back into her mermaid form. Isla says Ruby likes her better as a mermaid and introduces the Gemstone Dolphins to Barbie, with them all going for a swim together. They soon hear Emerald clicking and wonder how they can hear him being so far away from the facility. After discovering a cave with underwater tunnels, Ruby explores it with Isla.

Barbie's sisters overhear Marlo telling Hugo she wants Emerald transported to the mainland facility in an hour and Hugo's comments about how Emerald will make Marlo a fortune. Meanwhile, Isla reveals to Barbie that she found a maze of tunnels that are too puzzling for her to navigate. Isla notices that the Gemstone Dolphins are gone, and assumes they have also gone to the facility. Emerald squeaks sadly at Ken, but Marlo lies to him that Emerald is fine. Marlo notices the other Gemstone Dolphins that have arrived in search of Emerald and locks them in the enclosure. She phones Hugo and tells him they will need more nets so they can transport all 4 of the dolphins.

When Isla and Barbie arrive, Ken states that Marlo wanted the other dolphins so Emerald would be more comfortable. Barbie comes up with a plan to unlock the enclosure gate, with Isla turning her legs back into a tail and diving back in the water with the dolphins once it succeeds. She introduces everyone to the Gemstone Dolphins and affectionately refers to them as her "puppies of the sea." Marlo wants to transport all of the dolphins via helicopter, but Isla and the Gemstone Dolphins hide in an underwater tunnel in the enclosure to evade her. Barbie plays along by pretending the Gemstone Dolphins have escaped, so Marlo and Hugo get in the helicopter to find them.

Isla gives Barbie a shell that creates a light trail, with Barbie using this light to guide Isla and the Gemstone Dolphins through the tunnels and to safety. Marlo sees the dolphins escaping and orders Hugo to follow them. The Gemstone Dolphins make it through the tunnels with Isla in time to catch Ken and the others arriving on a speedboat, Isla getting on board. The Gemstone Dolphins swim alongside the boat until the water shallows, and then Isla dives back in to swim with the Gemstone Dolphins. Marlo sees Isla and wants to capture her instead of the dolphins, deeming her to be worth more. Isla urges the dolphins to split up, and Barbie disguises herself as Isla so she can escape with the dolphins and avoid being captured. Isla and the Gemstone Dolphins get to see Barbie and their other friends one last time after Barbie uses the shell Isla gave her.
