~ Genya Shinazugawa to Sanemi Shinazugawa. |
Genya Shinazugawa (不死川 玄弥, Shinazugawa Gen'ya) is a major character in the 2016-2020 fantasy horror anime/manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and its 2019 anime television series adaption, serving as one of the three tritagonists (alongside Hotaru Haganezuka & Kotetsu) of the Swordsmith Village Arc and its third season adaption.
He was another Demon Slayer who joins at the same time as Tanjiro Kamado, Zenitsu Agatsuma, and Kanao Tsuyuri, and is the younger brother of the Wind Hashira, Sanemi Shinazugawa.
He is voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto in Japanese and by Zeno Robinson in English.
Appearance[]
Genya was a tall boy with large dark purple inward-slanting eyes. The space where his eyebrows would have been is constantly furrowing, which has given him a permanent angry look on his face. His hair is styled in a buzz-cut with only a clump of messy black hair.
He wears a dark olive-green Demon Slayer uniform over his purple yukata, which he had sported.
Personality[]
In the beginning, Genya was a foul-mouthed and ill-tempered boy who declined any support from others and showed a little interest in being polite or showing any kind of courtesy. He roughly handled Kanata Ubuyashiki during Final Selection by grabbing her hair and screaming at her harder, which results into Tanjiro Kamado breaking his arm. His ill-tempered traits and brash way of speaking is much like his older brother Sanemi Shinazugawa.
However, all Genya truly wants is to be accepted by his older brother. After Genya learned the truth about why Sanemi killed his mother, he kept trying to apologize to him, only to keep getting rejected. He cares for his brother so much to the point of calling him the nicest person in the world.
Following the Swordsmith Village Arc, mainly thanks to Tanjiro's influence, Genya became a bit more nicer and was far more in control of his temper, although there are moments where he does lose his temper as seen when he punches Zenitsu for insulting his brother, while getting into a little scuffle with Inosuke for insulting him for his lack of breathing styles.
Abilities[]
Genya Shinazugawa is one of the unique characters in Demon Slayer when it comes to his abilities, since he is one of the few characters who doesn't possses a breathing style technique. So in order to make up for it, Genya possessed another ability that served as his main strength: the ability to consume and be empowered by demon flesh. Thanks to his strong jaw and special digestive organs, he was capable of tearing off and consuming demon flesh without any effects. Once he consumes them, he temporarily gains the abilities and characteristics of demons, becoming more stronger as a result. To add up with that, he is capable of getting an enhanced physical constitution along with a potent regeneration.
Equipment[]
Nichirin Shotgun: Genya harbors a western double-barreled shotgun he uses for close and ranged combat proficiently. The bullets he uses are made of Scarlet Crimson Iron Sand and Scarlet Ore, allowing him to kill demons without a blade.
Nichirin Wakizashi: Genya also carries a shorter Nichirin Sword seemingly being a wakizashi with two hollow ovals that overlap its core and are a dull shade of brown for its handguard.
Etymology[]
- The name Genya means "mysterious, occultness" (玄) (gen) and "all the more, increasingly" (弥) (ya).
- Genya's surname Shinazugawa means "immortality, eternal life" (不死) (shinazu) and "river, stream" (川) (kawa/gawa).
- The kanji "不死" in his surname has a cruel irony considering that he is only one of six main members to died.
Trivia[]
- Nobuhiko Okamoto (Genya's Japanese voice actor) has also voiced:
- Katsuki Bakugo in My Hero Academia.
- Rin Okumura in Blue Exorcist.
- Liebe in Black Clover.
- Genya is one of the few characters of the series that does not use a sword primarily and the only Demon Slayer that can't use any Breathing Styles.
