Biography[]
Genzo was a significant figure in Bell-mère's early life, often calling her a “little thug” due to her rebellious nature. He was shocked when she decided to join the Marines, and later even more surprised when she returned to the village with two little girls—Nami and Nojiko. Though he initially protested her decision to adopt them, he ultimately supported her and became a watchful guardian, especially toward Nami. Since Nami used to cry when she saw him because of his stern appearance, Genzo wore a pinwheel on his hat to make her laugh.
As Nami grew up, Genzo kept a close eye on her, knowing she had a habit of stealing. Despite Bell-mère often manipulating him with humor and charm, he always helped her and cared deeply for the small family. When Arlong and his crew invaded the village, Genzo tried to protect everyone and was horrified when Bell-mère was killed. He attempted to stop Arlong from taking Nami by force but was brutally beaten and left with severe scars.
Later, he tried to form a rebellion but stopped when he saw Nami had joined Arlong's crew, feeling betrayed. However, after learning about Nami's secret plan to buy back the village's freedom, he chose to keep quiet to avoid making her feel trapped or pressured. For eight long years under Arlong's control, Genzo endured the oppression and kept hope alive. When Arlong sent Marines after Nami to force her continued servitude, Genzo and the villagers decided they couldn't take it anymore and marched to Arlong Park. Though stopped by Johnny and Yosaku, Genzo helped Luffy's crew during the final battle. He played a key role in keeping Luffy alive while he was trapped underwater, teaming up with Nojiko and Sanji to rescue him.
After Arlong's defeat, the village celebrated its freedom. When Marine officer Nezumi tried to confiscate Arlong's treasure, Genzo stood by as Nami and Zoro forced him out. Later, Genzo met with Luffy at Bell-mère's grave and warned him that if he ever took Nami's smile away, he would kill him. When Nami left to join the Straw Hats, Genzo placed his pinwheel at Bell-mère's grave, symbolizing that Nami no longer needed it to smile.
