“ | Where better to die... than in the arms of my son... | „ |
~ George Joestar's last words after sacrificing himself for his biological son Jonathan. |
George Joestar I is the overarching protagonist of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part I: Phantom Blood. He is the father of Jonathan Joestar and the adoptive father of Dio Brando.
He is voiced by Tsutomu Isobe in Japanese and Marc Diraison in English, who voices Guts in the 1997 anime adaptation of Berserk and the Golden Age Arc Trilogy.
Appearance[]
George is a middle aged man with blue hair like his son Jonathan Joestar. He wears a generic 19th century tuxedo and sports a mustache with the same color as his hair.
Biography[]
Sometime during the mid-19th century (presumably the 1860s), George, his wife Mary and his son were involved in a horrific carriage accident on a stormy night. Mary and the driver were killed, and Dario Brando arrived on the scene to steal George's jewelry. When George woke up from the incident, he mistakenly thought Dario was there to rescue him and Jonathan, and told Dario the Joestar Family owed him a life-saving debt. When Dario was in jail for stealing the ring, George easily and generously bails Dario out of jail by claiming that he gave Dario the ring out of his own will.
After Dario's death, Dario's son, Dio, went to live with George and Jonathan at the Joestar Estate, which George accepts unconditionally. Despite Dio consistently being a jerk to Jonathan, George continues to embrace the mischevious kid like a second son. Eight years later, Dio began executing his mastermind plan to inherit the Joestar fortune, and attempted to poison George with fake medicine supplied by Chinese apothecarist Wang Chan. However, his plan was foiled by Jonathan, who discovered his traitorous intentions.
On the night of Dio's arrest, George joined his son, Speedwagon and the arresting officers, expressing his disappointment in Dio. However, Dio attempted to kill Jonathan Joestar with a knife and use his blood to activate the Stone Mask. George jumped in the way, acted as a human shield and was stabbed in the back instead. George's blood, which had splashed onto the mask, causes Dio to change into a vampire. George later died nestled in Jonathan's hold, commenting that "it isn't so bad to die in your son's arms".
George's death shook Jonathan and the officers greatly. The constable reminisced on the day George defended Dario and offered his release, demonstrating severe regret in his decision not to evict Dario from London. However, Speedwagon declared George's kindness and noble spirit had been passed onto Jonathan, a prophecy which would be tested and proved true.
