Duty is my highest calling.
~ Geras, Mortal Kombat 1
Though the barrier between timelines had been rebuilt, there was no question that they could again be broken. Protecting this timeline would require eternal vigilance, so that it could not fall victim to further outside aggression. But nothing in my countless lifetimes had prepared me for this task. In none of them had multiple timelines ever coexisted. Monitoring them for threats was an entirely novel problem. It would require a novel solution. I discovered that, though the timelines no longer touched, their meeting had left them intertwined. I can now secretly surveil all timelines, keeping watch for potential danger. It pleases me to do this service for the new era. Lord Liu Kang may rest assured that it is secure.
~ Geras' ending in MK1.

Geras is one of the main protagonists of Mortal Kombat 1, having previously served as a villain in Mortal Kombat 11. Having been created to serve the Keeper of Time, Kronika, he was forced to work for her in her previous timelines, although Geras showed signs of a more honorable side. After Fire God Liu Kang gained control of her Hourglass, Geras was given a second chance, choosing to aid him in creating a New Era.

Geras is voiced in Mortal Kombat 1 by Phil LaMarr, having previously been voiced by Dave B. Mitchell.

Biography[]

Mortal Kombat 11[]

Geras was an immortal construct, being millennia old, whose every death makes him stronger. With his long life, he has experienced many events, such as the Ice Age and the Great Kung Lao's defeat by Goro. During the events of Mortal Kombat 11, he directly aided Kronika in her scheme, before eventually being defeated by Raiden. In his Towers Ending however, Geras decides to turn against Kronika due to being broken at every reset of the timelines and never being granted any sort of peace. Becoming Keeper of Time, he attempts to create the perfect timeline, but every attempt leads to failure due to mortal free will. Instead, rather than acting as Lord of Time, Geras elects to sacrifice himself to allow the Hourglass to run itself, letting him rest in peace for the first time in eternity.

Mortal Kombat 1[]

Geras is reconstructed by Fire God Liu Kang at the dawn of his New Era, now acting as his right-hand man. With Liu Kang focusing on his role as defender of Earthrealm, Geras has assumed the mantle of Keeper of Time, watching over the hourglass to ensure Liu Kang's New Era is not undone. Geras first appears to Liu Kang in the Fire Temple, commenting that ever since he has been relishing his role as protector of Earthrealm. After the pleasantries, Geras reveals that the Shang Tsung of the New Era has somehow became a great sorcerer again, in spite of their best efforts to prevent this destiny. Liu Kang decides to investigate, while Geras returns to the Hourglass for more information.

Sometime later, Liu Kang regroups with Geras, having discovered that a new Deadly Alliance has been made by Shang Tsung and Quan Chi. Geras reveals that they were approached by a mysterious woman who altered their destinies, and assured Liu Kang that she could not be Kronika, as Titans are permanently once they die. Hypothesising that the mysterious person may be from a different timeline, Geras returns to the Hourglass to further his investigation, while Liu Kang sends his champions to put a halt to Shang Tsung and Quan Chi's plans.

Another villainous counterpart Geras exists in Titan Shang Tsung's timeline until the second Armageddon.

As Geras feared that relinquish the Time Titan's power cannot be undone and Titans cannot be resurrected upon their deaths, combined by the existence of multiverse came from a clash result between Liu Kang and Titan Shang Tsung's battle over the Hourglass, Geras was able to preserve Liu Kang's Titan power inside a jaded jaguar gifted from their universe's Great Kung Lao, with Liu Kang finally reuses it during multiverse-related crisis since Titan Shang Tsung's invasion.

Khaos Reigns[]

Appearance[]

Geras is visually similarly to a well-built, black man with blue eyes.

Following his recreation by Liu Kang, his outfit is changed to mostly resemble a Shaolin warrior with red pants, black boots and a white and dark blue sash, resembling Liu Kang's color scheme from his mortal days. He also now bears a glossy dragon tattoo wrapped around his upper body, coiling twice around his left breast and lower back.

Personality[]

Geras also exhibits the traits of a scholar, as a witness of many lifetimes in many timelines. He studies and collects knowledge of events, cultures, and people and, as a result, has an impressive knowledge of the realms and the denizens that inhabit them that he puts to use serving Kronika.

In the new timeline, while retaining the same memories from previous timelines, Geras is reconstructed by Liu Kang, no longer a brutish enforcer but his wise and cherished friend. Alongside Liu Kang, he is a Keeper of Time alongside the Fire God, becoming the Guardian of the Hourglass after Liu Kang had relinquished his power over The Hourglass. After restoring Liu Kang's power, he later anoints Geras as the timeline's new Keeper, as Liu Kang again wanted to remain as the Protector of Earthrealm, thus making Geras one of the most powerful characters in the franchise as a result.

  • In his mirror matches, two of Geras's counterparts seem noble, with one wishing to return to his own time without destroying the present, or originating from a previous timeline to warn the main Geras of a dire threat, while other versions are more villainous.
