I only kill asesinos who deserve it. It's vengeance, chica.
~ Ghost Rider to Quake.
I died, and there's nothing, there's just darkness. Then I heard a voice, asking me if I wanted a second chance, did I want to punish those who hurt my brother, did I want to avenge my own death? I answered yes, more than anything yes.
~ Robibe explaining how he made his deal to Johnny Blaze.

Roberto "Robbie" Reyes (also known as the Ghost Rider) is the anti-heroic deuteragonist of the fourth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

He is often confused of being a villain by S.H.I.E.L.D. though in reality he is only trying to get rid of crime in L.A. and protect innocent people like his brother. Although he will kill criminals instead of bringing them in, which is something a hero would not do, he states he tries and lives a by a code to only kill those who are evil.

He was originally thought to be the first character in the MCU to take on the mantel of the Ghost Rider, but it's later revealed he is the second, the first being Johnny Blaze (who gave Robbie his powers in order to save his brother, and get revenge on those who killed him).

He is portrayed by Gabriel Luna, who also portrays Tommy Miller in The Last of Us.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Roberto "Robbie" Reyes is the son of unnamed parents, and is the older brother to Gabriel, and his parents died of at an unknown time. He was raised in Los Angeles by his uncle, Eli Morrow alongside his brother, and dropped out of Garfield High School during his junior year. Despite dropping out of school, Robbie took a job at Canelo's Auto and Body, becoming an expert mechanic.

Becoming the Rider[]

I was alive again, and you're right, there was someone there when I came to. But it wasn't a Good Samaritan. It was the Devil. Whatever was inside him, he passed it into me.
~ Robbie to his brother and Quake.

One day, Robbie decided to steal his uncle's car and take it for an illegal drag race in Los Angeles. He was caught by Gabe, and invited his brother to join in the race, and they went cruising around the neighborhood. A group of Fifth Street Locos pulled up in front of their car, and they attacked the brothers, throwing a Molotov cocktail that caused the Hell Charger to be engulfed in flames.

Reyes used his driving skills to attempt to escape the gang, but the gang caught up with them and fired at the car, causing it to crash. Gabe's injuries caused him to lose the ability to walk, as Robbie was thrown from the car, flying into the air with his body covered in bullet wounds. His last thought was to call for help to anyone who would listen, God, or someone else to save Gabe, as he blamed himself for the incident.

Robbie died upon impact, but heard a voice through the darkness, asking him if he wanted to avenge both his own death and to get revenge on those who harmed Gabe. Reyes said yes, and a moment later he was alive again, and the stranger came to him. It was Johnny Blaze a demonic being with a flaming skull, and touched Robbie, who transformed into the Ghost Rider. Robbie decided to not tell Gabe of how he survived, as he feared that Gabe would not able to understand, and Eli was later sent to South Ridge Penitentiary on charges of attempted murder.

Robbie then used his demonic powers to track down and bring vengeance upon those he deemed guilty and deserved death. This included members of the terrorist group Watchdogs, the Fifth Street Locos, a corrupt cop, councilman Roger Perez, and the pedophilic school teacher Thomas Wright. His murder spree gained him a dreaded reputation, and made the Ghost Rider a feared symbol in Los Angeles, with his story being told and his image being sprayed painted on walls.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.[]

I'm not the one who decides...
~ Robbie to Quake before transforming.

Personality[]

I have a code, I try and live by.
~ Robbie to Phil Coulson on his "habit" of killing evil doers.

Reyes is absolutely brutal in his methods, even torturing and executing his victims after they've already been subdued. However, he only kills those who truly deserve it. The innocent are spared even if they attack him, as shown when Ghost Rider spares Quake even though she doesn't think of herself as a good guy.

On the flip side, he used to be reckless and uncaring, as he sold his soul to the Devil to save his brother's life from a gang attack. But he blames himself for the experience and remains torn between his desire to atone for his mistakes and the Rider's thirst for vengeance.

Powers and Abilities[]

Yeah, but it's hard to describe. The main thing is, there, I'm just a passenger. Ghost Rider drives. And by "drives," I mean fights and kills. It's kind of all we did.
~ Robbie to Quake.

Powers[]

  • Inner Demon: Having received the Spirit of Vengeance from Johnny Blaze, Robbie is endowed with supernatural powers that he can channel into his human being. However, the Spirit of Vengeance can take control, and his powers are amplified to a higher degree. The Ghost Rider is in fact an avatar of the fallen angel named "Zaratos", a powerful entity who gave Mephisto the task of dealing with vengeful individuals by making them possessed by the Ghost Rider, a flaming Cosmic Skeleton, a sapient being clad in leather clothing riding a motorcycle or other vehicle and feeding off its host's anger and thirst for vengeance; it seems to possess infinite power and all the powers of hell.
    • Transformation: Robbie's most prominent ability is to transform into a skeletal being that is engulfed in flames. When transforming into the rider or using his powers, he lets out a roar, and his skin becomes to burn off. If he is angered or stressed enough, Reyes can lose control and transform without meaning.
    • Supernatural Durability: When the Spirit of Vengeance takes over Robbie's body, he is invulnerable to physical harm to a considerable extent, surviving the explosion of a warehouse full of fireworks, immune to I.C.E.R. blasts designed to put someone to sleep, and feeling nothing when confronted with Aida's powerful electric bursts, which were at one point strong enough to destroy a containment chamber designed to hold powerful Inhumans and enhanced individuals. Nor is he affected by impalement, an extremely toxic nuclear radiation, for long periods without suffering the slightest injury, although he still feels the pain associated with it. The Ghost Rider also renders its host immune to diseases, viruses, bacteria, parasites, contaminants, poisons and toxins, and slows down, if not completely stops, its aging process, making it capable of living for millions of years or more if it wishes. However, when Robbie is in command, his durability is limited, yet he can still be damaged, as he was in a fight against Quake, and was slightly shaken when Hellfire threw a fireball at him. Robbie also mentioned being knocked down and hit by cars several times, being shot at, cut and impaled several times, but each time the injuries were not permanent and had already healed when he woke up the next day.
    • Supernatural Strength: When the Rider takes over, he possesses overwhelming strength, making him stronger than any other inhuman or super-soldier SHIELD has ever recorded, reaching records previously held by super-powered, near-godlike beings such as the Hulk, Thor or Thanos. In doing so, he's able to gain the upper hand over any inhuman, mutant or optimized human, crushing skulls and ripping out spines effortlessly, demolishing cars without difficulty, knocking out Quake, a powerful inhuman, dropping an entire shelf on her single-handedly and brutally beating Jeffrey Mace, who's strong enough to support the weight of a building collapsing on him. As Robbie, his strength is inferior to that of the Rider, but still superior to that of humans, enabling him to rip the engine out of a car with his bare hands, hold back the ghosts created by Moreau's machine (Lucy Bower, etc.) quietly, and was the first person to break free of a containment module, which also effectively contained other super-powered beings such as Thor or the Hulk (two behemoths of power, an act Leo Fitz considered impossible).
    • Supernatural Agility: Thanks to centuries spent fighting monsters and demons in the dimension where he sent Elli Moreau, the Cavalier has acquired a super-agility that enables him to quickly dodge and master Aida's robots, which she created with the help of the Darkhold, a powerful book of dark matter that contains within it all the knowledge of the entire universe.
    • Indomitable Will: The Ghost Rider has an indomitable will when it comes to punishing criminals and beings who have escaped from hell, so it's impossible to reason with him, to change his mind, to divert him from his mission, to prevent him from punishing anyone, his thirst for vengeance being stronger than anything. He will fight to the death to bring about his revenge. He is also immune to all attempts to mentally manipulate or seduce him, and all psychic or telepathic attacks are in vain, as his le Rider makes his mind and that of his host undetectable and impossible to manipulate. When he and Robbie were trapped in the dark dimension, he never gave up and continued to fight for what he describes as millennia, whereas for those left behind, it was only a matter of weeks. He then went on to retrieve the Darkhold and lock it safely away in the Dark Dimension.
    • Regenerative Healing Factor: His demonic powers enable him to recover from the damage he suffers. When he transforms into a Ghost Rider and reverts to his human form, he instantly heals his wounds and describes himself as almost impossible to kill. That said, his skull is cracked from being ejected from the Hell Charger. Thanks to the Ghost Rider, on the rare occasions when he is injured, Robbie is able to heal perfectly from all wounds, burns, scars, dismemberments, stabbings, as well as viruses, diseases, poisons, toxins and parasites, etc.... He's also immune to all types of radiation poisoning and blood loss, having survived for over an hour exposure in a nuclear-infused Beryllium canister which, according to Fitz and Simmons, was powerful enough to completely wipe out Los Angeles.
    • Hell-Fire Manipulation: Ghost Rider is able to control and generate fire at will, and is also resistant to fire itself, as it doesn't burn him or his clothing. He can also imbue metal objects he touches with fire, being able to do with his hellfire chain, and can channel fire in his human form. He also can use hellfire, doing so against Aida, burning her arm that couldn't heal, despite possessing Jiaying's factor. In addition, he can apply anything he touches with heat, allowing anyone to feel the sensation of something burning, and can incarnate people, turning them into ash.
    • Dark Matter Detection: The Spirit of Vengeance possesses the ability to sense and track the presence of beings and objects made of dark matter, such as the Darkhold or Aida, with Robbie claiming that the Horseman in him hated her deeply.
    • Sins Manipulation: The Rider can look into a person's soul through their eyes, to see what kind of person they are. He can examine their mental and emotional characteristics and qualities to determine whether they are doing good or evil, like a corrupt cop or a pedophile teacher. However, he has the ability to target good people, regardless of their opinion. He can also "feed" on that person's sins, fueling his anger and thirst for vengeance, and project the person's sins directly into his eyes, so that he feels the pain and sorrow he has inflicted on others. However, this doesn't work if the person is blind or justified/victimized, when a person did wrong for the right reasons or did it because they were a victim of their past.
    • Transdimensional Interaction: As a god-like entity, Ghost Rider can touch non-corporeal entities or individuals whose bodies are out of phase with the Earth realm. If the situation calls for it, he can hold them back and kill them with hellfire. He was able to hear and see Robbie when the latter was trapped in the nightmare realm caused by Elli's bomb, could talk to him and even managed to return to him and bring him back to reality through Hell. Demonstrating his ability to travel through dimensions. Later, he was able to defeat Aida by circumventing her regenerative healing properties.
    • Power Bestowal: Robbie is able to confer his powers on inanimate objects, such as his Hell Charger car, making it indestructible and capable of self-repair, from a simple scratch to a Bazooka rocket in a matter of seconds; phasing through solid matter, becoming invisible, making the vehicle faster too, reaching speeds beyond the speed of Light, being able to travel through space without suffering the side effects of acceleration, etc.... Passengers and drivers are thus totally protected from the harmful consequences of these record speeds. However, the enchantment is not permanent, as when Reyes is not linked to the Spirit of Vengeance, the car loses its powers and reverts to a normal car.
    • Interdimensional Travel: From his time in the Dark Dimension, Robbie learned to create interdimensional portals by twirling his flaming chain in circles for several seconds before releasing, finally opening a portal to the desired dimension. The portal is harmless and carries all matter without leaving anything behind, meaning that passengers can cross themselves with whatever they're carrying with them, such as clothes, luggage, etc. It's also possible to see through to the other side of the portal, albeit a little blurred, but once the Rider - the person who opened the portal - crosses it, it automatically closes again after a few seconds.

Abilities[]

  • Multilingualism: Robbie can speak and understand English and Spanish easily.
  • Mechanichal MasteryAs a former mechanic, Robbie understand auto parts and engineering.
  • Expert Combatant: Robbie is capable fighter, being able to handle his own against Quake, a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and Inhuman, but had to turn into the Ghost Rider to continue. However, his second time fighting her, he was able to knock her out while in his human form.
  • Chain Proficiency: Robbie became to like the Hellfire Chain, being able to use against Hellfire, and became proficient with it when fighting his enemies.
