Gianni Di Marco is a fictional character and central protagonist of the BBC British soap opera EastEnders.

He debuted on 26th January 1998 and became one of the show's major protagonists up until his departure on 3rd August 2000.

The character is portrayed by Marc Bannerman.

Biography[]

Gianni Di Marco first came to Albert Square in Walford, a fictional borough in East London, on January 1998 for the funeral of his late father Giuseppe. Shortly afterwards he moved into the square with the rest of his family, consisting of his brother Beppe; sisters Teresa and Nicky respectively; and their mother Rosa altogether.

As he and his family settle themselves on the square, Gianni embarks on several relationships that all end in disaster for him. This begins with him dating local businesswoman Annie Palmer, which is stopped when there are doubts over whether Gianni's real father is actually Annie's father George (Paul Moriarty). DNA tests prove Gianni really is a di Marco, but his romance with Annie doesn't continue. He then has a relationship with fellow resident Jackie Owen (Race Davies), but discovers that she suffers from severe PMT and this makes their relationship more and more difficult when Gianni has to put up with Jackie's violent temper along with her foul moods. Eventually, Jackie leaves Walford with her criminal brother Steve and her relationship with Gianni is over.

Soon enough, Gianni becomes entangled in Beppe's feud with the square's local hardman Grant Mitchell over the latter's mistreated wife Tiffany. It is then Gianni begins antagonizing Grant by taunting him over the affections of Tiffany's mother Louisie Raymond and then dating her to make him jealous. At one point, Grant attacks Gianni and threatens him to stop causing trouble. Later on, Gianni crosses paths with Grant's brother Phil when the pair go in opposite teams for a snooker game. When Gianni confronts Dan to warn him in staying away from Teresa over threatening circumstances, Dan rebuffs him until Gianni throws a drink at him. The pair nearly brawl until Gianni is forced by barmaid Mel Healy to leave the pub.

In July 2000, Gianni attacks Nicky's maths teacher Rod Morris (Forbes Masson) after she claims that he assaulted her. Rod presses charges of assault but later drops them. Gianni and the rest of his family leave Walford a mother to start a new life in Leicester, living with their uncle Franco - thus leaving Beppe in Walford along with his ex-wife Sandra and their son Joe respectively.
