~ Gildun meeting Aloy for the first time. |
Gildun is a minor character in Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds and a mentioned character in Horizon Forbidden West. He returns in Forbidden West's DLC expansion Burning Shores.
Gildun is an Oseram delver from the Claim, who has a knack for delving ancient ruins in search for valuable treasures. Unlike many Oseram delvers he has shown to have joys in his ventures as a delver rather than doing it for monetary, contractual purposes. He is firstly seen within the ancient ruin known as the Greycatch in The Cut by Aloy, before setting his destination to the Forbidden West and later the Burning Shores (post-apocalyptic Los Angeles) after his failed delve.
He is portrayed by Donovan Patton.
Appearance[]
Gildun is a male Oseram who has a Caucasian skin tone, as well as having blue eyes. He wears an Oseram outfit comprising of a brown leather ushanka with two circular decorations adorned within it, a blue scarf, a long-sleeved shirt with stripe patterns, brown jacket, orange pants, blue fingerless gloves and brown boots.
Personality[]
Gildun is a cheerful and vivacious man, though a little fumbling and irresponsible that would be sometimes considered as an annoyance. He is a gregarious individual who frequently regales anybody who will listen (and many who won't) with tales of life and his family. Gildun believes that the experience itself, not the rewards at the end, is what makes exploring fun, a philosophy contradicting to many other Oseram delvers.
Gildun's joyful façade belies his intense loneliness, since he has no friends outside his parents and Aloy. Aloy's friendship may be the only one he has, thus he appreciates it much.
Background[]
Past[]
Gildun, the son of two delvers, was raised in the Oseram capital of the Claim. He didn't participate in his parents' explorations until he was older, although they frequently brought back finds from the ruins. He will always recall the time when his mother brought back an ancient "looking glass", turning out to be a mirror. Gildun would eventually follow his parents as he got older.
Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds[]
Gildun believed he had spotted a mirror while exploring the remains of Greycatch in one of the storage spaces. He accidently broke the floodgates' control mechanism while attempting to get inside the storage space, which led to the facility flooding.
Gildun continued into the building in an effort to correct his error. Sadly, while he stood there, the rusted bridge within started to give way. A ring that Gildun had carried with him to the door's locking mechanism was left behind as he fled back in fear. The door, though, had shut behind him, squeezing him within.
Aloy, who had gone to the ruin to look into the unexpected flooding of Deep Din, discovered and saved Gildun. Gildun persuaded Aloy that the storage room would have the components required to repair the mechanism by outlining the sequence of events that had brought them to this point.
Gildun directed Aloy to two sluice gates that would allow her to find the ring by lowering the water level. He and Aloy cooperated to lower the gates after determining that each gate needed two persons to open it. This helped to lessen the flooding sufficiently for them to find the ring and get entrance to the storage area. Gildun was disappointed to learn that the mirror had only been an optical illusion. He was able to ignore it, though. Aloy granted Gildun the honour of reactivating the control mechanism after changing the power cell. After that venture, he stayed within the Cut, before plotting his next venture: The Forbidden West.
Horizon Forbidden West[]
At last, Gildun made it to the Forbidden West, where he wanted to explore the remains of "a gargantuan levee" (the Hoover Dam). After examining the area, he decided to give up since he thought it would be unsafe to take anything from the dam and was unlikely to find anything of great worth to begin with (reminiscing his failed previous delve in Greycatch). He left a scroll there, recounting his unsuccessful delve and his earlier antics with Aloy at the Greycatch dam, close to Spinebreak's eastern entrance. He also stated in it that he intended to travel to a region known as the "Burning Shores" in the south.
The Burning Shores[]
During her explorations in the Burning Shores, Aloy ultimately comes upon Gildun, who is, appropriately enough, once more imprisoned behind a locked door as a result of his own exploration. Gildun had gotten separated from Olvar after going overboard from their raft while travelling to the Burning Shores, and after being saved by Aloy he pleads for her assistance in finding him.
Aloy realises as they make their way deeper into the ruins that Olvar, who turns out to be the traitor, had planned the falling overboard in an effort to steal Gildun's priceless looking glass, which Aloy is able to recover from Olvar's remains (the man had entered and attracted the attention of a Burrower nest with his explosives).
Aloy reassures Gildun that she is his friend and gives him her own Focus so the two may stay in touch with each other and the other members of The Base after naively lamenting the loss of the person he thought was his sole friend. He gives her a gift before bidding her another heartfelt farewell, moved by her gesture and thrilled by his newly discovered ability to see holograms of the ancient ruins.
