Gilgamesh is one of the seven tritagonists of the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Eternals.
He is a member of community genetically-engineered Eternals who is devoted to protecting humankind from Deviants, but was secretly created by the Celestials to eradiate the Deviants for a new Celestial to be born from destroying a planet. Gilgamesh would become the partner of Thena, and decided to stay with her to fix her Mahd Wy'ry. When he reunited with the Eternals stop the Deviants and Tiamut's emergence, he was killed by Kro. His death was avenged by Thena, and the Eternals managed to avert Earth's emergence.
He is portrayed by Don Lee, who also portrays Sang-hwa in Train to Busan and Ma Seok-do in The Outlaws.
Biography[]
Background[]
Gilgamesh, along with the rest of the Eternals, was created by Arishem the Judge to get rid of the Deviants. However, Arishem formed the Eternals so they could eradicate Deviants, which would lead the the birth of a Celestial on the planet. After the Eternals completed their mission, the Celestials would wipe their memories to prevent rebellion. He would eventually be sent to live on Earth when they were sent there in 5000 BC, where he would protect humanity from the Deviants.
In 575 BC, Gilgamesh assisted the Eternals in stopping Deviants in Mesopotamia, and became a defied historical figure due to Sprite telling of his exploits. Gilgamesh would also assist the Asgardians in fighting against the Frost Giants, and was given a brew recipe as a gift for his assistance.
The Eternals would across the Deviants in the 1500s during the fall of Tenochtitlan, and Gilgamesh assisted the others in restraining Thena when she started to attack them. The group came to the conclusion that Thena was suffering from Mahd Wy'ry, and Gilgamesh decided to remain beside her in exile. Going to Australia, Gilgamesh would help Thena with her affliction, but would go on vacations by having Druig put Thena to sleep.
Eternals[]
In Australia, Gilgamesh and Thena were attacked by a Deviant, which led to the latter suffering from Mahd Wy'ry and attacking the arriving Eternals. Gilgamesh and Sprite managed to return back to normal, and the others informed them of Ajak's death while having dinner. When Sersi learned of Arishem's true plans of having them kill the remaining Deviants to start the emergence, Gilgamesh suggested putting Tiamut to sleep to avert it. Traveling to the Amazon Rainforest, the Eternals met with Druig, who refused to join the group as he dedicated his life in guiding his community.
The compound was attacked by Kro and the Deviants, and Gilgamesh participated in the ensuing battle while Druig brought his followers somewhere safe. During the fight, Gilgamesh was mortally wounded by Kro, who took his powers so he could be left in a fatal state. Before dying, Gilgamesh told Thena to remember the last thing he had told her. A funeral was held in his honor by the Eternals, and his ashes were spread across the Amazon river by Thena, who would later avenge him, as well as Ajak by killing Kro. The Eternals would succeed in stopping the emergence, thus saving Earth from destruction.
