Ging Freecss (ジン=フリークス, Jin Furīkusu) is the overarching protagonist of the anime/manga series, Hunter x Hunter. He is the father of Gon Freecss. He is a Double Star Archaeological Hunter (though he can apply for a Triple Star License), and a former Zodiac with the codename Boar (亥, Inoshishi). Finding Ging is Gon's motivation for becoming a Hunter.
In the Japanese dub, he was voiced by Hiroki Tōchi and by Urara Takano as a child in the 1999 version while Rikiya Koyama provided his voice in the 2011 version. In the English dub, he was voiced by Ben Jeffrey and Elinor Holt as a child, who also provided the voice of his own son while Marc Diraison provided his voice in the 2011 version.
Ging Freecss is a legendary hunter, as well as the former Boar of the zodiac, and Greed Island creator. He is also Kite's mentor and Gon's father. Admired by Satotz for his pioneering archaeological work, Ging been absent for most of the series but recently appeared to take part in the HA election. Despite these glowing accomplishments, Ging is a selfish, rude and stubborn man. His incredible power and massive reputation believe a shy man concerned with his appearances and reputation- he doesn't want to see Gon not because he hates him, but because he's incredibly shy and is worried about what his son will think of him.
After the election's end and meeting Gon, Ging resigned from his position as Boar of the zodiac.
Ging has a shy and stubborn personality, to the point that he only wants Gon to meet him alone and claims that it would be cowardly of Gon to bring a friend to meet him, causing one of his friends to wonder if he is afraid of crowds. Judging by his actions at the New Hunter Chairman Election to ensure Netero's will be carried out, he seems to respect the late Chairman considerably. Despite this negative trait, he can be a pretty decent guy all things considered. He set up ruin excavations and preservation projects out of his own pocket, treated Razor, a criminal and murderer like a human being which deeply touched Razor, and after one of Beyond's team told him that the reason he needed money was to care for his sick sister and make sure she would be OK even if the he dies following Ging, Ging's response was, "Sorry, but after hearing that, there's no way I can let you die".
Ging is a Double Star Ruins Hunter and Gon's father and motivation to become a Hunter. He left Whale Island to become a Hunter before he turned 12 years old, only returning ten years later to ask his grandmother to take care of Gon for a while. But Mito felt him unfit to parent and gained custody of Gon, and Ging never returned again. He is the main creator of the Greed Island video game, and is also the one who captured and placed Razor in the game. A member of the Zodiacs, his code name is the "Boar" and he is one of the only two members who do not mimic their corresponding animal. At the end of the Chairman election, Ging at last meets Gon. He tells Gon to apologize to Kite and about the meaning of adventure before they once again part ways. He then resigns from the Zodiacs and joins Beyond Netero's expedition to the Dark Continent, buying his way into second-in-command in name only.
Ging claims that he does not want to see Gon because he is too ashamed of himself for being absent in Gon's life due to his own selfishness, and challenges his son to find him. Despite that he seems confident in Gon's abilities and knows him better than anyone; he knew Gon would become a Hunter and left a memory card for Greed Island and a recorded message with Mito to give to him once he did, and knew Gon would eventually recover from his hospitalization. All information about Ging is classified even in the official Hunter database. He is Kite's teacher and also inspired Satotz to become a Hunter. Chairman Netero once told Biscuit that Ging is one of the top five best Nen users in the world.
- He apparently built up quite a fortune in the the two decades he's been a Hunter, as he is able to casually pay huge sums to others without worry.
- Ging admitted he has no place raising children, hence why he avoids being with Gon unless asked by him.
- Had Gon not become a Hunter, Ging likely would never had seen him again.
- He ensured Gon couldn't get any concrete clues on how to find him through his Greed Island gift, using Nen on the cassette tape to erase its content is stopped and erasing a clone tape at the same time. He even ensured an Accompany card would lead Gon to Kite instead of him, as he would only see his son alone.
- He resembles an older Yusuke Urameshi, due to being drawn by the same manga artist.
