~ Ginty persuading a guard to give him the detonator.
Ginty is a minor character in The Dark Knight. He is an inmate of Blackgate Prison who is forced to take part in a twisted "social experiment" by the Joker.
He was portrayed by Tom Lister.
Biography[]
Ginty is one of the hundreds of prison inmates who are evacuated from Gotham aboard a ferry during the Joker's terrorist threat. It is unknown what crime he committed to get him sent to Blackgate, although it is implied to have something to do with organised crime.
During the evacuation, Ginty and the other prisoners learn that their ferry has been rigged with explosives by the Joker, as has the Liberty which is carrying civilians, and that both ships will be destroyed unless the occupants of one choose to destroy the other with a detonator. Ginty's fellow inmates begin screaming for the warden to destroy the Liberty to save them, while Ginty himself remains silent.
Five minutes before the deadline, Ginty stands and approaches the warden. He appears very intimidating and the warden is clearly afraid of him. Ginty tells him to hand over the detonator, explaining that the other prisoners will kill him for it and he can always pretend Ginty stole it from him. He finally says that he will do with the detonator what the warden should have done ten minutes ago. The warden reluctantly hands over the detonator, and Ginty immediately throws it out of the window before silently returning to his seat.
Thanks to Ginty's actions, the prisoners are unable to destroy the Liberty, and the passengers aboard the Liberty choose not to use their detonator when they realise the prisoners were not willing to kill them. Batman later defeats the Joker before he can destroy the ferries, ensuring that Ginty and the others survive their ordeal.
