Heroine Overview

That's how you do it!
~ Girlfriend in the Tutorial.

Girlfriend Dearest (supposedly), simply known as Girlfriend or GF, is Boyfriend’s girlfriend and the deuteragonist of Friday Night Funkin.

She is the demonic daughter of Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest. She is usually seen sitting on top of speakers, bopping her head to the tempo of the music, cheering Boyfriend on and keeping track of combos. While not necessarily an antagonist, she is the first opponent faced by Boyfriend, and she teaches the player how to play the game with her only track, Tutorial.

In the Tutorial track, her vocals are provided by Kawai Sprite.

Appearance[]

Girlfriend is a young, light-skinned woman with long, thick auburn hair. Two short locks of hair stick out from her head, one much thinner and smaller than the other, and the shine on her hair resembles a skull. She wears a sleeveless red minidress and matching high heels. Her fingernails are painted red, as shown in her singing animations, where she points with both hands in the direction of the arrow note being hit. She is normally on a set of three speakers, sitting on the large middle one with her legs crossed. She is drawn in a chibi style.

During Week 4, her hair gets blown as a result of being on top of a moving car.

During Week 5, she wears a similar sleeveless red minidress with a fluffy white collar, red gloves with white cuffs, white thigh-high stockings with small red bows, and yellow bell earrings. The speakers she sits on are all wrapped in festive Christmas lights.

During Week 6, her regular appearance is rendered in a pixel art style.

During Ugh and Guns, she has her hands up as she is held at gunpoint by two Tankmen crouching on the two smaller speakers that lay beside the large speaker she sits on. During Stress, she is held up from her waist by Boyfriend.

Personality[]

Girlfriend is portrayed as a young, mysterious woman. With a love for cherry soda and her boyfriend, she seems to be calm and collected in almost any situation, even in the face of death. Being a demon, she seemingly possesses a great deal of power, but she mostly chooses to hide it. She is always seen with Boyfriend at her side, courtesy of true love, as she genuinely loves him very much.

Like Boyfriend, Girlfriend lacks intelligence to the point of being unafraid of almost anything. In general, she either does not realize when she is in danger or is confident that she can get out of such situations, which may also be due in part to the power she has. Her lack of intelligence can result in her getting into difficult situations, such as getting her hand stuck in peanut butter jugs and having to wait for hours for someone to help get it out. However, she is still capable of making smart decisions and knows what to do when dealing with taxes and facing death.

Girlfriend has been diagnosed with ADHD and ASD. The only individual she has been shown speaking to is Boyfriend. In Week 6 and Week 7, she does not speak at all, and she seems to barely acknowledge the opponent, if at all. Furthermore, she occasionally has poor object permanence. Girlfriend's talents as an artist and painter show that she is a creative individual. She has a poor concept of time, too, which is a common ADHD trait. She doesn't know very well how to handle money, either; she will normally make commissions (due to being an artist), but she will ask for 1 trillion dollars, or when she has to pay for a hamburger, she will pay less than what the hamburger costs.

Girlfriend has been described as being mean "in her own special way." She also likes to do immoral things, appearing to not care about the consequences of her actions as long as she gets what she wants. For instance, using her mother's limousine, she and Boyfriend hold up McDonald's drive-through slots as they hold the store hostage to get whatever food they want.

Role in the Game[]

Girlfriend helps the Boyfriend learn the basics of how to play Friday Night Funkin' by giving him an easy tutorial. She says whatever the note on the screen is, and then she points. (Left = Pointing left, Right = Pointing right, etc.) and when its your turn, you need to press the notes on the screen in the same order and speed that she said them. if you mess up, you look worried and lose confidence in your singing, your score goes down, and then she continues giving you her tutorial. After you complete her tutorial you're able to move on to the next weeks; during those weeks Girlfriend doesn't actually do anything besides bop her head. But as of the playable Pico update, she'll do a cheer animation if the player reaches a 50+ combo. But if the player loses a 70+ combo, she'll briefly cry.

In Week 7, the Girlfriend was briefly held at gunpoint during "Ugh" and "Guns", two of the week's songs, holding her arms up. It isn't until the third song, "Stress", that she tries to use her demon powers against the Tankmen. However Pico suddenly arrives to shoot the Tankman army, punching Girlfriend off the speaker. Thankfully, she lands into Boyfriend's arms. Boyfriend then proceeds to sing Stress while carrying Girlfriend with one of his arms.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Great Mental Force: Girlfriend is immune to mind control since she cannot be hypnotized to stop loving Boyfriend.
  • Immortality: Since Girlfriend is a demon, she cannot die.
  • Magic: Due to being a demon, she can use her demonic powers to trap souls in other places or even give herself a ''penis''.

Trivia[]

  • Much like her parents, Girlfriend is a demon. This is confirmed in Week 7, where once the player receives a Game Over, her skeleton can be shown as red with black protruding horns. She also was fully prepared to use her demon powers against the Tankmen, and weren't it for Pico's timely arrival she would've decimated the Tankmen in seconds.
    • The developers revealed that her true form bares a resemblance to her parents' and that she looks human because of true love.
    • On that note, Boyfriend is well aware that Girlfriend is a demon since he clearly sees that both Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest have purple skin and glowing red eyes, and as anyone with an IQ over room temperature can tell you humans don't naturally have those features. Of course Boyfriend still loves her anyway because he simps for demon girls.
    • Girlfriend was originally going to speak in a similar way (like that of Boyfriend) in the Tutorial, but were scrapped in favor of her speaking English.
  • She weighs 900 pounds. Girlfriend is chunky, but Boyfriend still loves her.
  • It is very difficult to hypnotize her to make her stop loving Boyfriend.
  • Girlfriend would burn down her house if she tried to cook. The only thing she can "cook" is PB&J sandwiches, and Boyfriend acts extremely enthusiastically whenever she makes them for him for dinner.
  • According to PhantomArcade. GF is never in danger, because she is too powerful (in fact, it is said that she has an unknown threat level, meaning that she is either too powerful or her powers are unknown).
  • Girlfriend apparently knows how to paint (according to a PhantomArcade sketch).
  • Despite the fact that multiple mods raise the idea that GF had an ex or that she hurts people, in reality she only has one boyfriend (BF) and she would never hurt anyone unless they threatened her.
  • Girlfriend is crosseyed.
    • When Girlfriend and Boyfriend sign up for a driver's license test, they use a fake ID, and they crash into trees and run away. As a result, the Henchmen are stuck driving Mommy Mearest's Porsche back, and she tears the Henchmen's fingernails and eyelashes off.
      • Girlfriend and Boyfriend need fake IDs because they don't want the police called on them; they go to the same DMV every few months.
  • Girlfriend can use demon magic, including giving herself a penis.
  • In a Twitter sketch, it was hinted that Girlfriend is an artist. This was later followed up by a sketch of her showing Boyfriend a painting she made of Pim and Charlie from Smiling Friends. However, in a Twitch stream, it's confirmed that due to her density, she doesn't know how commissions work, meaning that she probably doesn't have an exact price on art commissions in general, though she sells her commissions for 1 trillion dollars.
