Glinda Upland, also known as Glinda the Good and formerly referred to as Galinda, is the deuteragonist in the musical film, Wicked. She is a "popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart". In Wicked, she serves as a protagonist throughout the first movie.

She is portrayed by Ariana Grande, who also played Cat Valentine in Victorious and Sam & Cat.

Personality[]

Viewed by many to be a sweet young woman, Glinda actually shows that much of her kind persona masks the need for admiring attention and having her desires met. This has caused her to be somewhat obnoxious as she expects things to happen how she wants.

During the film, she shows that she does her best to hide jealousy when she is not the center of attention and anger when she is disrupted or not viewed as the most promising sorceress-to-be.

When arriving at Shiz, Glinda was upset when she was immediately turned away by a teacher she admired and showed great trouble. The same teacher admitted that she felt Glinda would not live up to expectations placed upon her by others and herself.

Glinda also shows to be quite vain as she takes great care of her appearance and is shallow as she only attempted to win the heart of the prince without giving others a real chance. After playing a prank on Elphaba caused her to see how mean she actually was, she did her best to try to be kinder and did become friends with the future witch. However, when speaking with the Wizard about Elphaba's powers being needed for a grand scheme, she was quick to side with the Wizard as it would ensure her own future of becoming the Good Witch.

History[]

Not very much is known about Glinda's upbringing prior to the main story. She is greatly implied to have always gotten her way and effortlessly gotten as much attention as she wanted.

Trivia[]

  • Grande's Role as Glinda was Foreshadowed in Victorius Season 3's "April Fools Blank". In the episode, a parody of The Wizard of Oz called The Wizard of Wazz, and Grande played Dorothy.
    • For added measure, Cat had to pretend to be a blonde in Season 3's The Blonde Squad. Come Wicked, she once again donned the hair color.
