Hero Overview

Go Gunhee is a major supporting character in the action dark fantasy anime, webcomic, and light novel series Solo Leveling. A retired S-Rank hunter, he works as the chairman of the Korean Hunter Association before he died at the hand of the Frost Monarch, leaving his spot to his assistant, Woo Jinchul, as the new chairman of the association. He is also the titular main protagonist of his own spin-off webtoon stories for the video game of the series titled Solo Leveling ARISE Hunter : Origin - Go Gunhee's Story.

He is voiced by Banjō Ginga in Japanese, by Jun-seok Song in Korean, and by Kent William in English.

Appearance[]

Gunhee is an elderly Korean man with his head covered with scars, including the right side of his neck. His grey hair is short and his eyes are a brown color. As a Korean Association member, he is usually in a formal black suit with a golden clip attached to his black necktie and a golden button on the left side of his suit.

Personality[]

An easy-going man, Gunhee embodied humility, transparency, and sincerity. He held a deep admiration for individuals with virtuous principles but harbored strong disdain for those solely driven by self-interest. Consequently, Gunhee shared a positive rapport with Sung Jinwoo and garnered widespread respect within Korean society. His dedication to work reached extreme levels, impacting his well-being. Despite the toll on his health, he aspired to champion noble causes, yearning to reclaim his hunter status and resent the limitations imposed by his age.

Biography[]

D-Rank Dungeon Arc (anime and novel only)[]

Gunhee is sitting in his office explaining Woo Jinchul, his chief inspector about the mana stones and economic system of the hunters get to earn while defeating monsters in dungeons.

Background[]

Gunhee, once the most powerful hunter in Korea, experienced a deterioration in physical abilities attributed to aging. This prompted an early retirement from the hunter profession, despite only a brief tenure. Confronted with few alternatives, he abandoned the prospect of resuming his hunter duties and ultimately assumed the role of chairman within the Korean Hunters Association. In pursuit of reversing the aging process through the exploration of healing magic, Gunhee aimed to regain his former strength, but these endeavors proved unsuccessful before he began to work as the president of the association.

Retesting Rank Arc[]

Upon to being notified that Jinwoo held the prestigious title of the 10th S-Rank Hunter within Korea, Gunhee endeavored to enlist him for the Association, but his efforts proved futile. Jinwoo, aware that joining would hinder his ability to consistently raid high-level dungeons, declined the offer. Recognizing Jinwoo's honesty, Gunhee accepted his rationale. Instead of dwelling on the scheduled meeting with government ministers later that day, Gunhee opted for a drink with his right-hand man, Jinchul, choosing not to squander his time on unproductive endeavors. Hunters Guild Gate Arc Eager began to be more and more interest in him, he tries uncover more details about Jinwoo, and Gunhee delved into his records. Discovering Jinwoo's challenging history, Gunhee admired his determination to provide financial support for his family despite the perilous nature of his work as a hunter. To his bewilderment and astonishment, Gunhee later received information from Jinchul revealing that Jinwoo had unexpectedly joined a mining team affiliated with the Hunters Guild.

Return to Demon Castle Arc[]

Gunhee attended Jinwoo's official reassessment two days later and aided him in entering the building, circumventing interference from Lee Minsung's bodyguard who obstructed Jinwoo during Minsung's press conference. Upon discovering that the ants on Jeju Island had acquired the ability to fly over long distances, Gunhee somberly observed that the situation was unfavorable for Korea. This sentiment deepened as the international community showed reluctance to assist, compounded by a sense of hopelessness when Thomas Andre demanded payment for his participation in the raid.

However, his outlook shifted when Goto Ryuji, Japan's most formidable hunter, personally came to Korea. Goto proposed a straightforward plan where Japanese hunters would act as bait for the ants, allowing Korean hunters to sneak past and eliminate the unguarded queen. Seeing no alternative and finding the plan promising, Gunhee accepted Goto's offer.

Soon after the murderous attack of magical beasts that occured at Jinwoo's sister's college, Jinah, Gunhee held a meeting with Jinwoo, informing him that numerous other nations are planning to recruit him. He earnestly urged Jinwoo to remain in Korea, pledging full support by offering whatever resources he needed. Sensing an opportunity, Jinwoo inquired if he could be granted legal permission to solo raid high-ranking gates. Gunhee assured him that he would facilitate this request. Upon the National Assembly's approval, driven by the fear that Jinwoo might defect if not accommodated, Gunhee dispatched Jinchul to accompany Jinwoo on his guild's inaugural dungeon raid. Jinchul's exhausted return hours later, describing the raid as a massacre, confirmed Gunhee's earlier belief in Jinwoo's exceptional abilities as a one-man army.

Filled with excitement, Gunhee contemplated how Jinwoo's existence was poised to reshape the world.

Double Dungeon Arc[]

Following the abrupt appearance of an S-Rank Gate in Tokyo, Gunhee had a face-to-face encounter with Matsumoto Shigeo, the Chairman of the Japanese Hunters Association. In the midst of their discussion, Matsumoto proposed hiring Jinwoo in exchange for relinquishing the Japanese government's share of essence stones recovered from Jeju Island. To Matsumoto's dismay, Gunhee was already aware of his scheme to exploit the Jeju Island Raid to eliminate Korean S-Ranks. This knowledge had been acquired from an intact receiver retrieved from Goto's corpse beforehand. Incensed by Matsumoto's audacity to discuss essence stones in light of his heinous deeds, Gunhee vehemently condemned him for his actions. His anger reached a boiling point, leading him to crush the receiver in his hand, inadvertently destroying the table they were using. Despite the intensity of his emotions, recognizing Jinwoo's preference for power over materialistic pursuits, Gunhee advised Matsumoto to appreciate that Jinwoo would accept the offer regardless of the monetary compensation.

Powers and Abilities[]

As the former hunter who held peak physical prowess over all others in his country, Gunhee's power is roughly estimated right below Jinwoo's as both being vessels of rulers and monarchs.

  • Immense Strength and Durability: Despite his advanced age, Gunhee exhibited remarkable resilience in combat. Following a stab through the chest by the Frost Monarch, he remained conscious for a substantial duration, summoning enough strength to hurl a fireball at his adversary, narrowly missing by a mere hair's breadth. Gunhee has also demonstrated his great strength to shatter sizable layers of ice with a single strike of the head and effortlessly deflect an energy blast from the Frost Monarch with just his hands.   • Ruler's Authority: One of the powers that Gunhee received as a vessel of a ruler is telekinesis, the power to move objects without direct contact. Trilinguism: Gunhee is fluent in not only Korean but as well as English and Japanese. This makes him an exception from many of the other Korean characters in the story.
