Yo no se maistro!
~ Godinez when the Profesor Jirafales calls on him.

Godinez is a recurring character of the comedy series, El Chavo del 8. He is portrayed by the late Mexican actor, Horacio Gomez Bolaños. In the animated series, he is voiced by Jesús Guzmán, the same one who voices Chavo to maintain the similarity of their voices. Godínez is his last name, but his name is never mentioned.

History[]

In the original series, he usually appears mainly in the episodes of the school. However, his appearances were more continuous on the Chespirito program of the 1980s and early 1990s, in which he is usually seen playing with children in the neighborhood and starring in scenes with Ñoño (even replacing him in some episodes in 1986). At that time he replaced Quico in some chapters with Ñoño and Popis. He was played by Horacio Gómez Bolaños (1930–1999), the brother of Roberto Gómez Bolaños. In Mexico, the word "Godínez" refers to office workers, bureaucrats and employees who often evade the responsibilities of their bosses, such as Godínez's character and Professor Jirafales's duties.

Personality[]

He is a very distracted child who sits in the last seat of the classroom and always tries to dodge Professor Jirafales' questions,so that he can entertain himself in any way, for example, to draw or touch his harmonica. Although he looks like a capable student, he's totally selfless. As always, he is attending to other matters in his notebook, the moment Professor Jirafales asks him a question, he replies, "I don't know," not even knowing what they're going to ask him. He is often seen playing with a balero. Godínez also seems to be a football lover, as he almost always spends his time at school talking about this and, on some occasions, was seen playing ball with El Chavo in the neighborhood.

Appearance[]

He's a medium-tall, black-haired kid. He wears a yellow shirt (green in the animated version) with a blue shorts jumpsole and a green baseball cap with a raised visor, short stockings and black shoes. His original design was going to be a white shirt, but the creators decided to give him a yellow shirt to give the show more pizazz.

Biography[]

Chespirito saw something else in his brother, however, and soon, he convinced Horacio to try it out as an actor. As a result, Horacio Gómez Bolaños got the character "Godínez" on El Chavo del Ocho. Horacio Gómez Bolaños appeared less frequently than his co-stars on both of Chespirito's shows. Nevertheless, he also attained wide fame internationally when the show became a favorite among millions of Latin American children, as well as in Spain, the United States and other countries. After the production of both El Chavo del Ocho and El Chapulín Colorado were finished, Horacio Gómez Bolaños retired from acting, focusing instead on directing, producing and overseeing the marketing aspects of other Televisa productions. He was cremated and his ashes rest at Chestojoback Church, in Lomas de Chapultepec. For his role in El Chavo, he was billed as simply "Horacio Gómez", without "Bolaños".

Trivia[]

  • According to the Chavo (sketch Fruit Classes of 1981), he says he has better teeth than him.
  • According to Professor Jirafales (sketch Classes on Spelling and Antonymps of 1988), Godínez writes a "G" in words where the "J" is used, which makes him accidentally write insults (such as when he writes the word "cajon").
  • Godínez is the only child who hasn't given an adult nickname for the Neighborhood. This would show that he is the most educated among all children, if you talk about respect.
  • Godínez is not very bright in school, because, instead of paying attention to Professor Jirafales' classes, he spends his time distracted, drawn or playing; this is the same thing happens when Professor Jirafales asks him something and he answers "I don't know."
  • According to the official website chespirito.com (in the Psychology of Characters of El Chavo), the Chavo avoids hitting Godínez because he returns the very strong blows, which states that Godínez possesses a lot of physical strength, which is confirmed in the 1979 episode, The Fair, where Godínez is the only one who was able to lift a hammer in a game of strength.
  • He can lose his temper sometimes with Chavo talking non-stop in the 80's Chespirito series, the same goes with Popis.
