Before time began, before spirits and life existed... Three golden goddesses descended upon the chaos that was Hyrule... Din, the Goddess of Power... Nayru, the Goddess of Wisdom... Farore, the Goddess of Courage... Din... With her strong flaming arms, she cultivated the land and created the red earth. Nayru... Poured her wisdom onto the earth and gave the spirit of law to the world. Farore... With her rich soul, produced all life forms who would uphold the law.
~ The Great Deku Tree describing the Golden Goddesses.

Din, Nayru, and Farore, collectively known as the Golden Goddesses, are the overarching protagonists (alongside Hylia) of The Legend of Zelda franchise.

They are a trio of divine beings responsible for the creation of the world in an effort to imprison Null and allow new life to bloom. In order to have the races of the world hope and a means to call upon them, the Goddesses created the Triforce, a sacred relic with the power to grant the wish of whomever touches it.

History[]

Past[]

Before time itself, Din, Nayru, and Farore, the Goddesses of Power, Wisdom, and Courage, respectively, believed themselves to be alone in an endless void. Seeking to fill the void with creation, the Goddesses attempted to spawn and cultivate new life forms. However, whenever they did so, the new life forms were seemingly consumed by the void. It was then that the Goddesses realized they were not alone; a primordial being known as Null existed alongside them. Wanting the void to remain forever empty, Null would devour any and all life that attempted to come into existence, absorbing them into itself and only increasing its power.

The Goddesses, enraged by Null's cruelty and selfishness, proceeded to create form Earth itself around Null, trapping the being of nothingness within creation itself. Din created the planet itself, Farore created the living things upon it, and Nayru established rule of law and provided the sapient races with a sense of morality.

With their work complete, the Goddesses had nothing more to do than to return to the heavens to continue creating life in other dimensions. However, they decided to leave the people of the world a gift to give them hope and allow them contact with the heavens: the Triforce, a golden, triangular relic that grants the wish of whomever touches it. The Goddesses tasked Hylia with guarding both the Triforce and the planet itself, then left the land for good. However, despite the Goddess' good intentions, their creation of the Triforce and imprisonment of Null would have terrible consequences in the eons to come.

Era of Hylia[]

For thousands of years, the planet thrived under Hylia's rule, with humanity becoming particularly prosperous. However, much like the Goddesses before her, Hylia eventually discovered that she was not alone. Another god existed beneath the Surface world, and though his creators— whether they be the Goddesses themselves or Null— remain a mystery, he was nevertheless her polar opposite, a being of pure evil: the Demon King Demise.

Seeking to conquer the world and claim the Triforce for himself, Demise created his own life forms; twisted, unholy monsters that served as his loyal servants. With his army assembled, the Demon King ravaged the Surface, gradually exterminating humanity in his quest to claim ultimate power. Hylia fought back, creating the Goddess Sword and a spirit named Fi to aid in combat; Demise responded in kind, creating his own sword with a spirit named Ghirahim.

Hylia was victorious, managing to seal Demise as the Imprisoned.
