Ethan Hunt: I swear your life will always matter more to me than my own.
Grace: You don't even know me.
Ethan Hunt: What difference does that make?
~ Ethan Hunt and Grace.
Mr. Kittridge. Ethan Hunt tells me you're a man I can trust. He also said you would offer me a choice. I choose to accept.
~ Grace.

Grace is the deuteragonist of the 2023 film Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One and will appear in the upcoming sequel Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. She is initially a pickpocket hired by a mysterious individual to steal Ethan Hunt's half of the key to the secret of the Entity. However, over the span of her mission, Grace starts to rethink her choices and choose a side upon being threatened by Gabriel.

Grace spends the first half of the movie trying to stay one step ahead of everyone on her tail, including Ethan (who she leaves handcuffed to a car in an active train tunnel at one point). During the climax, she's given the opportunity while in disguise as Alanna Mitsopolis/the White Widow to net a $100 million payday for trading the completed key to Kittridge onboard the train. After reflecting on Ethan's advice to her from earlier in the film, she rejects the money, showing that she's moved past her lifestyle of being a burglar and is committed to the team's more altruistic goals.

She is played by English actress Hayley Atwell (who also played Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Captain Carter in What If...? and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Evelyn Robin in Christopher Robin, and Lara Croft in Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.), with Vanessa Kirby (who also portrayed Hattie Shaw in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and Susan Storm/Invisible Woman in The Fantastic Four) portraying the character in the scenes where Grace wears a Latex Mask to impersonate Alanna Mitsopolis.

Personality[]

Grace starts out as a professional thief with a long list of criminal records in various countries, who initially only does what she does for a big payday and won't hesitate to throw Ethan under the bus once it benefits her. When she realizes that she's in way over her head once she meets her secret employers in Venice, learns that Ethan is pretty much the only person who wants to keep her safe, finally realizes just how massive the stakes really are and that she unwittingly assisted some very dangerous people who has the power to threaten the rest of the world, and sees Ilsa - a complete stranger - sacrificing her life to protect her from Gabriel, Grace mellows out significantly and finally acknowledges that it's time she uses her talents for good and assist the IMF in protecting the world from the Entity's threat.

Biography[]

Dead Reckoning - Part 1[]

An unidentified person hired Grace remotely to steal Ethan's share of the key after getting in touch with her. Grace went to the airport at the order of her boss and started looking for Ethan and the Buyer to get their parts of the key. Ethan noticed Grace's pickpocketing of the Buyer when she first targeted him, and he went to confront her. The key she stole from the Buyer, which Ethan tried to pilfer, turned out to be a phony. Then, in order to complete the transaction and learn what he desired for Ethan's part, he persuaded her to return the bogus key to the Buyer. However, when they went looking for the Buyer again, they found that he had been murdered.

After that, Grace was able to flee and leave Ethan behind at the airport to catch a flight to Rome. However, Grace was taken into custody by the authorities when she arrived in Rome. She was able to slip away and run into Ethan once more, who had been able to board a flight to Rome. She then decided to take a police car to use as a means of transportation. The two were cornered by a team of US operatives led by Jasper Briggs and the Italian police when Ethan gave chase on a police motorcycle. Ethan and Grace were given a chance to flee when a team of the Entity's goons commanded by Paris arrived in an armored car and started shooting at everyone.

When Grace tried to escape from Ethan once more, he had shackled himself to her. After the police car was totaled, the two shifted to a smaller, more modern vehicle that was painted to seem like a classic car. Paris gave chase in an armored vehicle as they fled in the police car. They were able to elude Paris by entering a little tunnel that was too small for her armored vehicle to pass through while she was still pursuing them. Grace was able to use a paperclip to open the handcuff's lock and secure it around the car's steering wheel so she had time to flee once more. The tunnel led to some train tracks.

The paperclip was then thrown to Ethan so he could use it to open the lock before running away. Grace found out her employer was the White Widow herself, who actually held the other half of the key, when she attended a party organized by the White Widow where her employer had agreed to meet her. Gabriel, Ethan, and Ilsa Faust were among the next individuals to approach Grace and the White Widow about the key. Gabriel then declared that he intended to murder either Ilsa or Grace, explaining that the Entity had calculated that if he did so, he would be guaranteed to board the Orient Express tomorrow with the Key.

In order to give her and Ilsa time to go, Ethan fought the White Widow's bodyguards and Gabriel's thugs when she refused to surrender the key to either of them just yet. Gabriel quickly caught up to Grace after she had escaped. Grace used a knife to try to stop him, but Gabriel was able to get the better of her. Gabriel was about to kill her when Ilsa arrived and fought him, preventing him from doing so. Grace agreed to cooperate with the IMF in order to retrieve both parts of the key because she felt bad that Ilsa had died in order to save her.

The IMF devised a scheme in which Grace would dress as the White Widow, board the Orient Express in her place, find out to whom she intended to sell the Key, and then elude capture with both pieces of the key. Ethan intended to join her by posing as the White Widow's brother Zola, but when creating his mask, the machine shorted out, requiring him to find a different means to board the train. Grace managed to board the train safely despite having to go alone and learned that the buyer of the White Widow was none other than CIA Director Eugene Kittridge.

After escorting Zola away, Grace made her identity known and struck a deal with Kittridge to give him both parts of the key in exchange for the CIA's protection and a sizable quantity of money into her account. Kittridge concurred, but when he showed her a digital transaction of the money, Grace's conscience overcame her and she declined it before making an attempt to flee. The genuine White Widow, however, had by that time recovered from the knockout serum Grace had administered to her and had admitted to her guards that Grace was a fraud.

The combined key was then lost in the confusion and picked up by Gabriel, who fled to the top of the train with it. At that point, Ethan got on the train to save Grace. Gabriel detonated bombs he had planted on the train's bridge to cause it to derail, leaving Ethan and Grace dangling over a ledge in a train car that was able to crash into the ravine below the collapsed bridge when Ethan was able to recover the key. Paris, who had earlier been injured and deceived by Gabriel, saved both of them. Grace spoke with Kittridge and informed her of her plans to join the IMF while Ethan jumped from the train.

Abilities[]

Despite the fact that she wasn't trained in the same way as Ethan, she can hold her own in a fight for a time (as seen during the fight against Gabriel on the bridge over the Venice canal), and shows shades of willing to drive capably under pressure, even when handcuffed to Ethan.
