~ The Grandfather and Chito's past interaction in one of the flashbacks in the Friends chapter of the Episode 12 of the anime. |
The Grandfather (real name unknown) is the posthumous overarching protagonist of the 2014 manga series Girls' Last Tour and its 2017 anime adaptation of the same name. He was the caretaker of the orphans Chito and Yuuri in the past at the unnamed town that they used to live.
While he is considered a posthumous and a mentioned character in the series, save for the flashbacks the series' protagonists experienced at some occasions of the story, his past actions were considered pivotal to the story's plot, as he was the same character responsible for the main characters to go on a personal journey into the highest layer of the megacity ruins, which Yuuri later reveals it on the "Hometown" chapter of the Volume 5 of the manga.
He is voiced by the late Motomu Kiyokawa in Japanese, while his English voice is voiced by John Swasey, who has done roles from other shows including Lord Death from Soul Eater, Bols from Akame ga Kill!, Kikunojo Tendo from Black Bullet, and Senzaemon Nakiri from Food Wars! series.
Appearance[]
The Grandfather's only known appearance in Yuuri's dream in Episode 12 of the anime adaptation was him wearing glasses. He also wore what seems to be beige-coloured turtleneck sweater, black pants, and black shoes.
Personality[]
The Grandfather was once known to be an intelligent man, as evident by his hobby of archiving books from pre-war times, ranging from ancient folklore including kappas (Japanese folklore) to historic war records.
The Grandfather was also literate, who was able to teach Chito in the past about the in-universe's language, the Contemporary Kana, albeit he was not able to teach Chito about other ancient writing systems, including the Kanji and Latin alphabet, who were considered relics of the past. It remained unclear, however, as to why he was not able to teach Yuuri basic language.
He was also a skilled driver, where he was was able to teach Chito how to drive the Kettenkrad.
Biography[]
Girls' Last Tour[]
Past[]
The Grandfather would take care of the orphans Chito and Yuuri, whose parents were unknown, in the past within the town that he lived, as its people were on the constant brink of war for resources. When the last war at his town broke, the Grandfather, now with a gun holding on his hand, ordered Chito and Yuuri to leave the town through the pipe storehouse as the only exit.
The Grandfather later told both Chito and Yuuri that both of them would be able to leave with sufficient food, thus starting their journey, catalysing the events of the series. The last thing he was seen was a loud gunshot, which would mean he presumably committed suicide through a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Current Fate[]
Posthumously, after his death, his wish for Chito and Yuuri to go on a journey to the highest layer would later be succeeded in the final chapter of the manga, "Last Stop".
