A queen. A warrior queen. The ultimate lordess. Ruler of the seven seas, etc., etc.. Give me a hug.
~ Grandmamah's introduction.
Please call me Grandmamah.
~ Grandmamah's most famous quote.
Tiny omission?, AGATHA!!!!!
~ Grandmamah getting furious over a tiny omission (which is the same thing as called lying).

Grandmamah is the overarching protagonist of DreamWorks' 44th full-length animated film Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.

She is the Queen of the Seven Seas and a veteran warrior who has a history of fighting against threats from underwater, most notably mermaids. She was separated from her daughter Agatha Gillman due to their tensions from their warrior lifestyle as Krakens, where she would expect her granddaughter Ruby Gillman in becoming a new Princess much like her daughter.

She is Agatha and Brill's mother, Arthur Gillman's mother-in-law, and Ruby and Sam's maternal grandmother.

She is voiced by Jane Fonda.

Appearance[]

Grandmamah has 8 tentacles (2 arms and 6 legs) with 4 fingers on each and green glowing skin.

Personality[]

Grandmamah was quite controlling of her daughter Agatha, and was the reason the latter abandoned the Royal Kraken throne after she ended the original War between Mermaids and Krakens, simply to get away from her. She employs the same method again on Ruby to get her to ascend to the throne, which she ultimately rejects due to wanting to live her life as a normal teenager. While she still insists on getting Ruby to ascend to the throne after the issue with Chelsea/Nerissa is dealt with, she allows Agatha to raise Ruby her way without Grandmamah interfering (as in her words: "Mothers know best"), which is implied at the end with Ruby and Agatha taking up the role of Oceanside's protectors.

Additionally, Grandmamah holds her negative opinion about humans due to the fact that humans love the very evil Mermaids and think of the heroic Krakens as shipwrecking monsters, especially in the trailers, and occasionally questions why her daughter and granddaughter seem to have a fondness for them. While the humans of Oceanside eventually start to wisen up a bit once they see Chelsea turn into the fearsome Nerissa and attack the town for real, it wasn't enough to change Grandmamah's opinion of them as a whole, though at least they're now treated more as protectors of the seas.

Nonetheless, she cherishes her family as the movie progresses; when Agatha intends on facing off against her reemerged arch-nemesis Queen Nerissa alone as payback for hurting Ruby, Grandmamah makes a surprise appearance in the surface water battle herself, with the intent of defending her daughter and granddaughter.

Abilities[]

Grandmamah shows her protective bright gold body armor that she uses to protect herself. She can also turn invisible to show Ruby that the krakens have the ability to go into a full invisible-like camouflage.

When Grandmamah tells Ruby to see what she's got, Ruby discovers that she too has laser eyes. Ruby's grandmother does say that, "They do pack a wallop", meaning that the laser eyes are a good arsenal to have in battle.

She can be seen using super speed in the film's trailer. When Grandmamah used super speed, she was showing it to Ruby at her place.

Biography[]

Grandmamah is an ancient Giant Kraken, the aging Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas, and she’s desperate for a successor. She was heartbroken when Agatha abandoned her and she’s beside herself with happiness when she meets Ruby, who is not only her long-lost granddaughter (and her chance to handle things differently than she did with Agatha), but her only hope in securing a Giant Kraken on the throne to protect the ocean from evil (especially evil mermaids).

Quotes[]

The Ocean is a mysterious world. One that land dwellers can only begin to imagine. Of course, you think you know what lies beneath the surface. Ah, but the sea creatures who live there, well, even the ones you have imagined, you've imagined them wrong. Take the mythical mighty giant kraken. Bloodthirsty monster, sinker of ships, drowner of sailors. That's what you people think. You see, in real life, krakens are noble protectors. The sea will always need a kraken, and a kraken will always answer the call!
~ Grandmamah's narration
Grandmamah: Normal according to who? The women in our family have been gifted the mighty power to turn into giant kraken. You are only one of three giant krakens on this Earth, Ruby. We must protect the ocean and its creatures. But many monsters have coveted our position and have tried to seize the throne for themselves. Brag alert, they never succeeded. The Leviathan, Umibozu, and the most power-hungry and dangerous of them all...
Ruby: The mermaid?
Grandmamah: Yes, the mermaid!
Ruby: But people love mermaids.
Grandmamah: Of course they do. People are stupid. Mermaids are selfish, vain narcissists with mediocre hair, and their queen, Nerissa, the worst of them all. She wanted to control the ocean and force its creatures to serve her and her alone. Normally, mermaids would be no match for us giant kraken, much too puny, but their queen found an ancient weapon, the Trident of Oceanus. The only weapon powerful enough to defeat a giant kraken. We formed the front lines against her, and for that... we paid a terrible price. Frankly, I suppose we'd all be kelp toast if it wasn't for your mother.
Ruby: No way. That's my mom? Was she actually cool?
Grandmamah: She was our greatest warrior. I mean, of course she was. I taught her everything I know. She engaged in a great battle with the tyrant mermaid and wrestled away the Trident. I called it her "queen-making moment." It was glorious. Nerissa fled in disgrace. (chuckles) We had a chance to crush the mermaids forever, but your mother did the unfathomable. She hid the Trident away, left her kingdom, left her kind, all to play human?
~ Grandmamah explaining to Ruby how the Krakens were fighting against the mermaids until her mother defeated them and runs away from the ocean with her.

Nerissa: The Greatest Warrior in the sea hiding amongst humans. Oh what a waste.
Grandmamah: No one talks to my daughter like that! Except me.
Agatha: sighs.
Nerissa: You've grown older queen.
Grandmamah: Older, and meaner!
Nerissa: Lucky for me mermaids don't age. Well I hope you both put up more of a fight then Ruby!!!

~ Grandmamah to Nerissa before they all battle
