Grandpa Son Gohan, also referred to as just Gohan, is the adoptive human grandfather of Goku until Goku turned into a Great Ape and accidently killed him. He serves as the posthumous overarching protagonist of the original Dragon Ball series, as well as the final protagonist of the TV special Bardock - The Father of Goku. He is often referred to as "Grandpa" Gohan to separate him from Goku's son Gohan, named in honor of him. He along with the Ox-king were students of the Turtle Hermit Master Roshi.
Appearance[]
Grandpa Gohan is a short, stubby old man with small dark eyes and a bushy white mustache and eyebrows and is also bald. He wears a Chinese martial arts uniform, which consists of a sleeveless orange jacket over a long sleeved black shirt, and wears a green hat.
Personality[]
Grandpa Gohan is a kind and loving man, kind enough to adopt Goku when he found him in the woods. It is likely much of Goku's personality and morality came from him. According to Goku, Grandpa Gohan had good manners and acted very well towards ladies. Grandpa Gohan may have been popular with the ladies, or perverted just like Master Roshi, because he says "I've got a lot of friends, and most of them are brunettes" in the Fortuneteller Baba Saga.
Biography[]
Son Gohan is a martial artist that lived in a cabin in Mount Baozi (known as Mount Paozu in some versions). Not much is known about his younger years, except that he was trained by Master Roshi along Ox-King. The training is the same one that Goku and Krillin does during the Tournament Saga: Delivering milk to the inhabitants of an island every morning while they overcome obstacles, help in construction or dodge wasps while tied to a tree. Thanks to this training, Gohan became an extraordinary fighter, being capable to realices techniques that few people on Earth can do like the Kamehameha.
During his old age, Gohan found in Mount Paozu a spaceship with an extraterrestrial baby inside it. This baby was Kakarot, a Saiyan from Planet Vegeta who was sent to the Earth before Frieza destroyed their planet. Gohan, seeing that the baby has no parents, decided to adopt him and named him Son Goku. However, Goku had the aggressive nature of the Saiyans and was a difficult child to care for. This changed when Goku accidentally fell off a cliff and he hit his head hard, this caused Goku an amnesia that made him lose his aggressive nature. Then Gohan educated Goku to be a nice boy, achieving results over the years. One night, Gohan learned that Goku is capable of turning into an Ozaru (Great Ape in English) when he looks at the full moon. Seeing how destructive this transformation is, Gohan prohibited Goku to look at the full moon again. During Goku's childhood, Gohan took him the basic knowledge about martial arts so that he can survive in the mount, although Gohan didn't show him the Kamehameha since he wasn't ready to learn it, he took him a personal technique named Rock-Paper-Scissors, that Goku would later use against several enemies.
However, during a full moon night, Goku disobeyed the rule about never looking at the full moon and this caused him to turn into an Ozaru again, this time Gohan didn't got the same luck as before and was killed by the ape. When Goku woke up, he only remembered that a great ape killed his grandfather, without knowing that he was that ape, soon after this he found the Four-Star Dragon Ball and believed that it was his grandfather who turned into this ball after his death.
During the story, Goku told his new friends about his grandfather, mainly about the fact that he was the one who taught him everything he knew about martial arts up to that moment. This was what made him get along with Ox-King, the father of his fiancee Chi-Chi and the reason why he decided to be trained by Master Roshi. When Goku and his friends decided to participate in Fortuneteller Baba's tournament to know the location of the last Dragon Ball, she uses her powers to bring back Grandpa Gohan to the Earth for one day, since Gohan asked her to revive him the day a boy with a monkey's tail (obviously referring to Goku) arrives at her palace. Gohan participates in the tournament as the last opponent using a mask to hide his identity. During the fight, Gohan shows to be at the level of Goku, but then he grabs his tail and begins to hit him hard against the ground. This stops when he rips off his tail, then Gohan abandons the fight and reveals his true identity to his grandson. After an emotional reunion, Gohan explains that he fought him and grabbed his tail to raise awareness of the problem that this weak point represents for him and that he must find a way to eradicate it. Which Goku agrees to do when his tail grows again. Then, Grandpa Gohan meets Goku's friends and learns about the existence of the Dragon Balls that were responsible for his achievements. Gohan is happy to see that Goku has a lot of friends and, now without anything else to do on Earth, he returns to the other world.
At some point, Grandpa Gohan became the assistant of Annin, the Guardian of the Furnace of Eight Divisions. When Goku and Chi-Chi go there to put out the fire in Ox-King's castle, Grandpa Gohan is happy to see how he has grown up. Then Grandpa Gohan witnesses Goku and Annin meeting. When Goku tries to stop the furnace from operating, Gohan tries to stop him since it is too dangerous if the furnace stops. After a brief confrontation with Annin, Goku finds a way to successfully stop the fire in the castle. Then, Goku says goodbye to his grandfather for the last time and Gohan is never seen again.
One year later, Goku decides to name Gohan his first son in honor of his grandfather. In the Saiyan Saga, when Goku sees Vegeta turning into a Ozaru during their fight, he realizes that he was the one who killed him, Goku feels sorry about this and apologizes his grandfather before continuing the fight.
