Grant Danasty, or Dynasty, in some spellings, is one of the four main protagonists of Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. He is a noble pirate who witnessed the death of his family at the hands of Dracula's minions, leading him on a path of vengeance. He is first encountered as a monstrous ogre in the Clock Tower level but he reverts back to his normal self after being defeated by Trevor Belmont. In his defeat, he offers his assistance and became one of the four heroes who defeated Dracula.
In Castlevania Judgement, he is voiced by Kirk Thornton in English and Masaya Onosaka in Japanese.
Appearance[]
Grant Danasty's design is very evocative of the typical pirate/thief. Most illustrations feature him wearing a blue shirt, brown jacket, red pants, a red bandana and an earring.
Biography[]
During the year of 1476, Dracula returned to wage his war on humanity, sending out his armies to terrorise the citizens of Wallachia. The Church, now desperate, had no choice but to turn to the Belmont Clan to defeat Dracula and stop him once and for all. At the same time, a group of rebels were plotting to kill Dracula on their own, but this attempt would end in failure. All but one of the rebels were killed, that sole survivor being Grant Danasty. As punishment, Dracula turned him into a monster and left him in the Clock Tower.
Later, a member of the Belmont family, Trevor Belmont, fought the monstrous Grant and defeated him, returning him to human form. Indebted to the Belmont, he granted his services to him. Later on, they encountered Sypha Belnades, a mage that was turned to stone by a cyclops and Alucard, the son of Dracula. By the end of the game, they defeated the evil vampire and the group watched his castle crumble by the sunset.
Other Media[]
Castlevania Judgement[]
Grant appears as a playable character in the fighting game Castlevania Judgement. The plot centers around the demon Galamoth, who sends the Time Reaper from the future into the past to destroy his hated rival Dracula. This disturbance in the timeline catches the attention of a mysterious time traveller named Aeon, who seeks to restore the timeline to it's proper state. He pulls together certain warriors from throughout the Castlevania timeline into a dimensional rift, in order to find someone powerful enough to defeat the Time Reaper. One of these warriors is Grant Danasty.
In this game, it is revealed that he has become devoted to rebuilding the many towns and cities that were affected by Dracula's war. He is also revealed to have developed feelings for Sypha, refusing to attend Trevor and Sypha's wedding out of jealousy.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night[]
A zombie impersonating Grant, alongside ones impersonating Trevor and Sypha, appear as bosses for Alucard to defeat in the Reverse Colosseum area.
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin[]
As in Symphony of the Night, zombies impersonating Grant, Trevor and Sypha appear as bosses, this time being fought by Jonathan Morris and Charlotte Aulin. They appear in the Nest of Evil level, where multiple bosses from past games are fought.
Trivia[]
- His last name, "Danasty", may be a reference to the House of Dănești, a real Wallachian noble family.
- Despite his role in Dracula's Curse, Grant is considered to be one of the most forgotten characters in the entire series.
- His only appearances are in Dracula's Curse, Symphony of the Night, Portrait of Ruin, Castlevania Judgement, and Pachislot Akumajō Dracula III.
- In Pachislot Akumajō Dracula III, Grant appears as a cameo using his 8-bit sprite. In the bonus mode, a quick description is given of him.
- Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, a prequel to Ritual of the Night, does not feature an analogue to Grant, unlike the rest of the Dracula's Curse trio. The game itself takes much inspiration from Dracula's Curse. It is possible that Robert, a character in Curse of the Moon's sequel, Curse of the Moon 2, may serve as Grant's Bloodstained series counterpart. But overall, instead of a character being similar to Grant they replace that idea with Zangetsu.
- In the Lord of Shadows universe, Grant's only reference is in a letter made by a dead knight from the Brotherhood of Light, while Trevor/Alucard and Sypha have their own roles within the story.
- Grant made no appearance in the animated series, and is only referenced through a simple joke where he is referred as "the pirate of the roads." His exclusion has caused some controversy by those who wanted Grant in the adaptation and felt that Warren Ellis excuse of the exclusion is very disrespectful to the character.
- His only appearances are in Dracula's Curse, Symphony of the Night, Portrait of Ruin, Castlevania Judgement, and Pachislot Akumajō Dracula III.
- The reason that Grant was not featured as a character in the animated series for a few reasons:
- Warren Ellis simply did not like the name and questioned "why would a pirate be in a landlocked country?".
- Even when the animated series was originally planned to be a movie, Grant was cut as the restrictive runtime didn't allow for him to be included alongside every other character.
- Despite this, the character Greta, leader of the village of Danesti, is seen as some kind of counterpart to Grant Danasty. Many have asked if they intentionally based her off of Grant. Kevin Kolde, one of the producers of the series, has commented that she isn't and it was just a coincidence. He goes on to state that they based her and the town on the real life village with the same name and were simply referencing it.
