Grant Wiggins is a teacher, the main character, and the narrator of A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines. The novel takes place in Louisiana during the late 1940s. Grant has an aunt named Tante Lou and he is African American. His aunt wants him to be involved with Jefferson, since he was about to be executed for being a black man and a white man was dead. Grant was a very passive aggressive character and even agreed to marry a half white half black woman named Vivian, despite knowing she was having an affair with her husband but still was a good role model for Jefferson, and also cared for him and did a lot of good things for him.
