Grapple is one of the supporters in Transformers. He was rumored to be an architect, but in reality, he is an artist. On Cybertron, before the war, his buildings were considered great works of art, but now his constructions are limited by the realities and needs of the war effort. It is a situation he often finds stifling. Grapple takes great pride in any work he constructs, and is prone to severe bouts of depression should his "masterworks" be destroyed in the course of combat. Grapple can usually be found hanging out with his close friend Hoist who does his best to cheer Grapple up when his artistic temperament has him down.
He is voiced by the late Peter Renaday.
Biography[]
Cartoon[]
Like many of the second year Autobots, Grapple appeared without introduction among the crew of the Ark in the two-part story "Dinobot Island". His most prominent appearance was in "The Master Builders", where he came up with the idea to build a solar power tower. Optimus Prime rejected the idea, so Grapple and Hoist accepted an offer from the Constructicons to help build it. However, once it was complete, Megatron took possession of it so it had to be destroyed.
He constructed the bunker used for testing Wheeljack's new weapon in "Auto Berserk" and was weakened by cybertronium deficiency in "Desertion of the Dinobots". He was one of the Autobots captured by Lord Chumley in "Prime Target" and captured Breakdown in "Masquerade".
He was briefly seen in The Transformers: The Movie helping to defend Autobot City. Like many of the Autobots from the first two seasons, he did not reappear in the third season.
Comics[]
Grapple debuted in Issue #14 as one of five Autobots whose brain patterns had been stored aboard the Ark. With the Autobots having sustained casualties in the opening months of the war on Earth, Optimus Prime had them activated as reinforcements. While the other four were given a tour of Earth by Bumblebee, Grapple remained behind on the Ark to work on a special project.
It wasn't until Issue #19 that this special project was revealed: Omega Supreme. With him available to guard the Ark, Grapple was able to join Optimus Prime and the rest of the Autobots in an attack on the Decepticon base in order to analyse their combiner technology.
In the UK-exclusive story "Target: 2006", with Optimus Prime shunted into limbo along with Prowl and Ratchet by the arrival of Galvatron, Cyclonus and Scourge from the future, Grapple functioned as the Autobots' medic. He took part in the disastrous first assault on Galvatron and later in the more successful ambush of Scourge, although he was impaled through the chest in the process and took no further part in the campaign.
He continued to make occasional appearances, such as witnessing Ratchet's failed attempt to revive Optimus Prime in Issue #26 and checking on the captured Blast Off in Issue #35. He was present for the battle with the Decepticons on the moon in Issue #41, fighting Wildrider. He made his last appearance in Issue #47, during the Underbase Saga, so may have been among the casualties of the incident.
The post-movie version of the character appeared in "The Legacy of Unicron" among the Autobots defending their base on Cybertron from a massive Decepticon attack, during which he fought with Blitzwing.
Abilities[]
On Cybertron, Grapple's buildings are considered works of art. On Earth, his ideas are limited by war. Likewise, he takes great pride in his work, who can be depressed if they're destroyed in battle. As crane, Grapple can lift up a 35-ton object and position it with precision and grace. As robot, he has high-temperature arc-welder rifle, who can launch rockets 4.5 miles from his wrist sockets.
