Biography[]

Background[]

Not much is known of Grayson Hunt's past, but at some point he joined the Confederation of Planet's central unit within the military before being assigned as the leader of Dead Echo. Under the command of General Victor Sarrano, Hunt and his subordinates Ishi Sato, Whit "Doc" Oliver, and Rell Julian were assigned to eliminate targets that were supposedly gun runners, slave traders and mass murders. In reality, they were killing innocent people as sanctioned assassins for Sarrano, using Dead Echo to kill anyone who personally opposed him, or were trying to expose his corruption.

Desertion[]

When tasked with assassinating Bryce Novak, Hunt and his teammates discover that he was actually a reporter who had documents of Sarrano's corruption. Confronting the general, Sarrano admits that he lied and threatens to have them killed for questioning him, but Hunt declares that he will kill him for his actions. Dead Echo then are forced to defend themselves from the police while also protecting Novak's daughter, and manage to escape to the outer edges of the galaxy. Becoming space pirates, Dead Echo became wanted criminals that became well known to the public due to raiding Confederate supply liners. During this time, Hunt turned to alcoholism due to his guilt of killing innocent people, which made him become reckless and pessimistic.

Bulletstorm[]

Approximately ten years after committing desertion, Hunt and his teammates continue to evade the Confederation on the Spectre while also killing bounty hunters hired by Sarrano. After dealing with one of the bounty hunters, Hunt is informed by Ishi that General Sarrano's battle liner the Ulysses has intercepted them. Wanting revenge, Grayson attacks the Ulyssess despite Sato's warning, which results in the latter being critically injured during the attack. Hunt then decides to fly the Spectre into Sarrano's flagship in a last ditch to kill his former commander, which causes the ship to crash onto the planet Stygia.

Hunt and his crew survive the crash, but he learns from Doc that Ishi will have to undergo cybernetic surgery and sends him and Rell to find an energy cell from the Ulysses escape pods. During the venture to reach the pods, Hunt and Rell encounter a hostile gang and manage to defeat them. Reaching to crash site, Hunt obtains an energy leash from a Final Echo soldier, and returns to the Spectre to allow Ishi's operation to proceed. During the surgery, the hostile gang arrives and kills Doc, but Rell sacrifices himself to allow Hunt and Ishi to escape. When confronted by an enraged Sato for actions, Grayson apologizes and promises to find a way to get Ishi off the planet so he can receive help from his injuries.

With the energy leash, Hunt is able to hear communications from Final Echo soldier Trishka, who is tasked with reaching to Sarrano to extract him off the planet. Grayson sees an opportunity to get off world and get revenge on the general, but Ishi reminds Hunt that they Sarrano to escape. While traveling towards Trishka's location, Hunt and Sato encounter the Creeps, a mutated hostile gang that are rivals to the Skulls. Additionally, Ishi continues to battle against the AI logic and processor, due to his incomplete surgery and anger towards Grayson for killing their friends and stranding them on Stygia. The two then reach Trishka, whom reluctantly agrees to partner with them to reach Sarrano despite knowing of their history.

The trio continue to fight against the hostile species on the planet, and later destroy a giant hyper-mutated flytrap that captured Ishi. When getting close to Sarrano's location, Grayson learns that Trishka is the daughter of Bryce Novak, and that he joined the Central Unit's military to kill the ones responsible for her father's death. Hunt tells Trishka that Sarrano was responsible, but doesn't reveal his or Ishi's involvement in the assassination. When a Heakton attacks the group, Hunt and Trishka kill it while flying a helicopter as Ishi protects Sarrano from the hostile gangs. Confronting the general, Sarrano tells the three that they need to reach the Ulysses to deactivate a DNA bomb that will wipe out all life on Stygia. After informing them, the general pushes Trishka off the roof, and Grayson is prevented from shooting him by Ishi.

Grayson and Ishi reluctantly partner with Sarrano to reach the flagship, and the two are betrayed by the latter as he has them activate the bomb and leaves to the rescue ship. Trishka arrives after surviving by holding onto a line, and the three reach the rescue ship and fight Final Echo soldiers. During the confrontation, Sarrano reveals Grayson and Ishi's involvement in Bryce's death, but uses the distraction to take control over Sato with an energy leash. Hunt manages to encourage Ishi to fight against his programming and protects his friend from Sarrano, but at the cost of being injured once again. Enraged, Grayson attacks Sarrano and injures him, but he and Trishka are launched back on the planet by the general. Despite this, the two are able to escape from Stygia by using one of Ulysses escape pods, but Grayson laments his remorse in causing his friends' deaths and failing to avenge them. Trishka comforts him, asking him what is he going to do about Sarrano's escape. Unbeknownst to Hunt or Trishka, Sato was revived by Sarrano for his own purposes, with the AI processor taking control.
