Well I think about it like this. Why see myself chained down, when I can be chained up.
~ Gren telling Viren why he's so optimistic.

Gren is a major supporting protagonist in the Netflix TV Show The Dragon Prince. He is the right-hand man of Amaya, who also serves as her language interpreter. He was sent on the mission of leading a rescue team to save Ezran and Callum from Rayla after she seemingly kidnapped them, before he was imprisoned by Viren. He was later freed by Opeli's soldiers when they arrested Viren.

He is voiced by Adrian Petriw, who voiced Adam in The Hollow and Iron Man in Iron Man: Armored Adventures.

Biography[]

Not much is known about Gren's past before the events of the series, only that he became Amaya's right-hand and language interpreter. He is first seen with Amaya as she hugs her nephews Ezran and Callum, and would spend the rest of the first half of the first season interpreting Amaya, such as when she was interrogating Rayla or when she was talking with Viren.

After Amaya told Gren to lead the rescue mission to save Ezran and Callum after they were seemingly kidnapped by Rayla and Amaya left to protect the border of the Human Kingdoms, Viren imprisoned him in his dungeon to make sure that his children were the ones to lead the rescue mission, since Callum, Ezran, and Rayla were transporting the egg of the Dragon Prince and Viren wanted to get it back.

Gren then spends most of the second season trying to talk to Viren and staying optimistic, with Viren always refusing to talk to him when Gren tried to do the latter. After Viren failed to convince the other Human Kingdoms to wage war on Xadia, Viren would have a brief talk with Gren, questioning how he was still happy and optimistic even after being imprisoned for weeks.

Gren simply responded why he should be chained down, when he could be chained up, Viren then told Gren that he admired his tenacity before trying to use a mirror he found on Avizandum's lair years ago. Gren was then freed by Opeli's soldiers after they imprisoned Viren for high treason.

Gren then goes to the border of the Human Kingdoms to see Amaya again, where they hug each other and Gren informs her about Viren's imprisonment. Gren would also try to help Amaya in destroying the border to avoid a Sunfire elf attack and tries to stop Amaya fro giving her life to do it, although he fails to stop her from destroying the border, but Amaya survives.

Gren is then seen in the battle of the Storm Spire where he helps in defeating Viren's army and is seen happy as Zubeia awakes and sees her son Azymondias, allowing peace between elves, humans, and dragons to be made.

Two years later, Amaya, Janai, and Gren went to a place where apparently something dangerous was and Janai went with Gren while Amaya took care of the horses. It's then revealed that Janai planned an engagement proposal through a dance, and hired a group of dancers to do it.

Amaya, however, misunderstood that they were going to attack her with flamong whips and knocked them out, and after understanding what was going on, Janai explained that the elves were just dancers, with her telling Amaya that it was an engagement dance, and Gren told her that while most of the sign langauage she used to talk to Amaya was great, Janai accidentaly told Amaya that she wanted to wrestle with her, but Amaya told her that it was perfect and she accepted her engagement proposal.

Gren would then help Amaya in trying to defend a woman named Lucia who was getting judged for ligting off the flame of a ceremony a Sunfire Elf was making to honor his mother who died that day, and if they failed to defend her, Lucia would be killed because of the Sunfire Elves' policy that if anyone ruined those types of cermonies, they would get killed for their actions. While they failed to convince the Six Horns to spare Lucia, Janai refused to kill Lucia, which caused Janai's brother Karim to try to usurp and kill Janai, but she was able to win against Karim and had him arrested.

Sometime later, while Amaya and Janai were choosing the flowers for their wedding, Gren would meet with Callum and Rayla who was suprised to find out they were unaware about Callum's aunts engagement to Janai, but decided to stay quiet because he believed it should be Amaya and Janai to tell them. After finding out and congratulating Amaya and Janai, Callum and Rayla reveal that the world is in danger, and explain how Viren and Claudia were planning to free Aaravos and they needed to get to the Bookery of Lux Aurea to find a way to stop him.

However, due to the many people who tried trying to take back Lux Aurea, Janai refused to allow them to go there, but Amaya was able to convince her and she and Gren, along with Kazi, decided to help them get to Lux Aurea. While Kazi and Callum were looking for information about Aaravos' weaknesses, Amaya apologized to Rayla for her past treatment of her, before threatening to kill Rayla if she ever hurt her nephew again.

Rayla tells Amaya that she didn't mean to hurt him and actually left him to protect Callum, which made Amaya realize Rayla was just like her in that they both became more lonely and emotionless to protect those they love, with Amaya telling Rayla that they were both wrong for doing so and that just like Amaya is stronger with Janai, Rayla is stronger with Callum, and that love can face through many obstacles.

Rayla, touched by Amaya's words, hugs her. After this, knowing that the sun was setting, Gren left to get back to Lux Aurea with Kazi while Amaya stayed for a bit so she could get Callum and leave as well. Days later, after Janai was captured by Kim'dael, Gren helped Amaya in her plan to trick Karim and get back Janai, and while Janai ended up being rescued, Corvus tells Janai that she had been betrayed by Miyana, who stole the Sun Seed and gave it to Karim, with Gren being shown saddened by this during the reveal.

Personality[]

Gren is an optimistic individual who always stays positive no matter the circunstances, such as when he was imprisoned by Viren for weeks. Despite him being his enemy, Gren respects Viren and always treats him in a friendly manner even after he was chained in a dungeon by him. Gren is also extremely loyal to Amaya, trying to save her when she decided to give her life to destroy the border of the Human Kingdoms, she also has a friendly relationship with him.
