Grendel 1 is a character from the Ace Combat video game series, serving as the main protagonist of the mobile game Ace Combat: Northern Wings. They are a member of the Nordennavic Royal Air Force and the leader of the black ops unit "Grendel Squadron", tasked with influencing world conflicts to ensure Nordennavic's safety.
Biography[]
Two months after the Ulysses asteroid planetfall, the Kingdom of Nordennavic resolved to create a top secret Grendel Squadron to covertly influence other nations' affairs to its benefit. To prove themself worthy of being the squadron leader, Grendel 1 had to pass through a training course, which they did successfully.
In 2000, during the Erusean refugee crisis, Grendel 1 saved the UN commisioner from being shot down by Erusean forces in an attempt to prevent him from examining the refugee camps and learning of their mistreatment. Later that day, they stopped Eruseans from shooting down transport planes carrying refugees to Nordennavic.
In 2004, during the Usean Continental War, Grendel 1 attacked Erusean radar station on Mount Shenza to help ISAF evacuate its forces.
In 2010, during the Circum-Pacific War, Grendel 1 went on board the Arkbird spacecraft and used its laser system to destroy a large number of Yuktobanian forces invading Sand Island. Later, while the Wardog Squadron was on a secret mission, Grendel 1 stopped Yuktobanian forces from mounting another attack on Sand Island. It was eventually revealed that the war was orchestrated by Belka, whose agents sabotaged the Arkbird and sent it on a crash course towards Oured, the capital of Osea. Grendel 1 pursued and shot down the spacecraft.
In 2013, as the civil war raged on in Estovakia, Nordennavic chose to support Dvornik's Eastern Faction rather that Lyes' United Front. Thus, Grendel 1 and their squadron were dispatched to assist the former faction.
Unfortunately, after Eastern Faction won the civil war, it invaded the neighbouring Republic of Emmeria. At the start of the war, Grendel Squadron fought off Estovakian forces to give Emmerians time to retreat, and at the end of it, as Gracemeria was under threat of destruction by the Chandelier railgun, pursued the Anti-Air Weapon System installed on the giant Antlion spider tank, to make the Chandelier vurnerable. By destroying it, they allowed Emmerian forces to destroy the railgun and win the war.
For their service, Grendel 1 was awarded the Star of Valor by General Rasmussen.

- Grendel 1 is one of the few Ace Combat protagonists, alongside Nemo and Ace, to only pilot fictional aircraft.
- Despite the large number of conflicts Grendel 1 was involved in, the events of Northern Wings, and thus all of their actions, are considered non-canon due to a large number of contradictions, such as Grendel Squadron being credited for destroying the Arkbird instead of Razgriz Squadron.
