Groot is a superhero and a major character of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
He is a Flora Colossus, an ancient race of tree-like humanoids, who became the best friend of Rocket Raccoon. The duo became interchanged with saving the galaxy from Ronan the Accuser, who attempted to do so by using the Power Stone. Groot sacrificed himself to save his teammates, but was able to return via offspring, becoming baby Groot. Though a baby, Groot managed to aid his allies in defeating Star-Lord's father, Ego the Living Planet. In 2018, he attempted to stop Thanos from wiping out half of the universe, but was erased from existence. He was resurrected by the Hulk in 2023, and helped his teammates and allies defeat Thanos and his army.
He is voiced by Vin Diesel (who also portrays Dominic Toretto in the Fast & Furious franchise, Richard B. Riddick in the Riddick series, Xander Cage in the XxX films, Kaulder in The Last Witch Hunter, Bloodshot in the titular 2020 film, and also voiced the Iron Giant in the titular film), as Krystian Godlewski, James Gunn, Sean Gunn (who portrays Kraglin Obfonteri in the Marvel Cinematic Universe), and Terry Notary provided motion capture.
Background[]
Groot is a humanoid tree that travels with the adventurer former mercenary Rocket Raccoon. Groot's ability to instantly grow in size and his incredible strength make him very useful to the much smaller Rocket during their adventures, and the two have grown to be inseparable best friends over the years. Eventually Groot, along with Rocket, join up with notorious outlaw Peter Quill, Drax the Destroyer, and daughter of Thanos Gamora in order to protect the Galaxy from intergalactic threats.
Groot and the team later assist Star-Lord in defeating his father, Ego alongside their new teammates, Nebula and Yondu, and Yondu sacrifices himself. In 2018, Groot aids Rocket and Thor in trying to prevent the Mad Titan Thanos from wiping out half of the universe with the Infinity Stones. Despite creating Stormbreaker and fighting the Outriders, Thanos succeeds in his goals, and Groot is one of the many who is killed.
He was resurrected in 2023 by the Hulk, who, along with the Avengers, used time travel to collect the Infinity Stones to bring everyone back to life. Groot met with his teammates and other heroes to battle Thanos and his army, and saw his defeat by Iron Man, who sacrificed himself. After attending Iron Man's funeral, Groot and the guardians invited Thor as their teammates, and decided to go looking for Gamora.
Appearance[]
Groot is a hyper-intelligent, tree-like organism from the species Flora colossus native to the planet X. While he possesses human level intellect, Groot's robust and heavyweight physiology causes the organs of his acoustic generation to become stiff and inflexible, rendering the limits of his speech to the simple phrase, "I am Groot."
Personality[]
Groot is usually very gentle and warm, displaying kindness towards innocent life. However, he can also be merciless and brutal towards his enemies, especially if they threaten his friends. He once extended his arm and put it into a row into numerous Kree before they got to him, Drax, and Quill.
As a baby, Groot can misinterpret the simplest requests, which was exhibited when he was having trouble bringing Yondu's prototype fin and pressing the "death button" on the bomb used to kill Ego.
He is loyal to Rocket and the other Guardians, and was even willing to die to protect them, as shown in the Battle of Xandar, when he willingly sacrificed himself to save his friends. Before his sacrifice, he told Rocket that they had to save their friends when Star-Lord and Gamora were being held by Yondu an the Ravagers.
As an adolescent, Groot displayed the typical behavior of a human teenager, such as being rude, making a mess of his own space and getting obsessed with playing video games. Unlike his father, he hardly smiled and seemed to be unaware of his surroundings most of the time. He frequently snapped at his Guardian companions when he got told off, resulting in them, notably Rocket and Peter murmuring about how they miss the old Groot and how annoying the new Groot is. Nevertheless, Groot's loyalty to his companions remains as strong as ever and he staunchly stands by them during fights, fully retaining his old courage and headstrong nature. He even went as far as to resist the pain of the newly heated pieces of Stormbreaker and sacrificed his arm to create the axe without hesitation. He also seemed to look up to Rocket, referring to him as "Dad" in his native tongue as he faded away.

- According to James Gunn, the offspring of Groot doesn't have the memories of Adult Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy and is thus considered as a separate being from the original Groot.
- So far, Groot is the sole Guardian of the Galaxy to have no connection to at least one of their foes in their trilogy: Gamora and Nebula were Thanos' adopted daughters and worked for Ronan the Accuser, Drax the Destoryer lost his family thanks to Ronan and Thanos, Star-Lord and Mantis were Ego the Living Planet's children and Rocket Racoon has been confirmed to have been created by the upcoming third film's villain the High Evolutionary.
- James Gunn confirmed that Groot saying "I love you guys" to the rest of the Guardians at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wasn't actually him talking, but instead us as the audience finally understanding him after all these years.
