|~ Groot before sacrificing himself for the team.|
Groot is a superhero and a major character of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is the tritagonist of the Guardians of the Galaxy duology, one of the tritagonists of Avengers: Infinity War, and a minor character of Avengers: Endgame. He will return in Thor: Love and Thunder and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
He is a Flora colossus, an ancient race of tree-like humanoids who became the best friend of Rocket Raccoon. The duo became intertangled with saving the galaxy from Ronan the Accuser, who attempted to do so by using the Power Stone. Groot sacrificed himself to save his teammates, but was able to return via offspring, becoming baby Groot. Though a baby, Groot managed to aid his allies in defeating Star-Lord's father, Ego the Living Planet. In 2018, he attempted to stop Thanos from wiping out half of the universe, but was erased from existence. He was resurrected by the Hulk in 2023, and helped his teammates and allies defeat Thanos and his army.
He is voiced by American actor Vin Diesel, who also portrays Dominic Toretto in the Fast & Furious franchise, Richard B. Riddick in the Riddick series, Xander Cage in the XxX films, Kaulder in The Last Witch Hunter, Bloodshot in the titular 2020 film, and also voiced the Iron Giant in the titular film.
Groot is a humanoid tree that travels with the adventurer former mercenary Rocket Raccoon. Groot's ability to instantly grow in size and his incredible strength make him very useful to the much smaller Rocket during their adventures, and the two have grown to be inseparable best friends over the years. Eventually Groot, along with Rocket, join up with notorious outlaw Peter Quill, Drax the Destroyer, and daughter of Thanos Gamora in order to protect the Galaxy from intergalactic threats.
Groot and the team later assist Star-Lord in defeating his father, Ego alongside their new teammates, Nebula and Yondu, sacrifices himself. In 2018, Groot aids Rocket and Thor in trying to prevent the Mad Titan Thanos from wiping out half of the universe with the Infinity Stones. Despite creating Stormbreaker and fighting the Outriders, Thanos succeeds in his goals, and Groot is one of the many who is killed.
He was resurrected by the Avengers in 2023, who used time travel to collect the Infinity Stones to bring everyone back life. Groot met with his teammates and other heroes to battle Thanos and his army, and saw his defeat by Iron Man, who sacrificed himself. After attending Iron Man's funeral, Groot and the guardians invited Thor as their teammates, and decided to go looking for Gamora.
Groot is a hyper-intelligent, tree-like organism from the species Flora colossus native to the planet X. While he possesses human level intellect, Groot's robust and heavyweight physiology causes the organs of his acoustic generation to become stiff and inflexible, rendering the limits of his speech to the simple phrase, "I am Groot."
Groot is usually very gentle and warm, displaying kindness towards innocent life. However, he can also be merciless and brutal towards his enemies, especially if they threaten his friends. He once extended his arm and put it into a row into numerous Kree before they got to him, Drax, and Quill.
As a baby, Groot can misinterpret the simplest requests, which was exhibited when he was having trouble bringing Yondu's prototype fin and pressing the "death button" on the bomb used to kill Ego.
He is loyal to Rocket and the other Guardians, and was even willing to die to protect them, as shown in the Battle of Xandar, when he willingly sacrificed himself to save his friends. Before his sacrifice, he told Rocket that they had to save their friends when Star-Lord and Gamora were being held by Yondu an the Ravagers.
- Groot's nickname as “The Giving Tree” by Peter Quill is an allusion to a classic children’s book by Shel Silverstein.
- Groot is one of the oldest Marvel superheroes to be depicted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, along with Thor, Patsy Walker, Jeffrey Mace, Steve Rogers and Human Torch.
- He never interacted directly with Ronan nor took part in Ronan's death due to the fact that he was dead when Ronan died and he was reborn/resurrected after that final battle.
- Groot's age in every film:
- In Guardians of the Galaxy: 25 years old, 1 years old at the end
- In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: 5 years old, 18 in a mid-credits scene
- In Avengers: Infinity War: 18 years old
- In Avengers: Endgame: 18 years old.
- His last words to Rocket Raccoon before getting snapped out of existence by Thanos, translates to "Dad".
